This is a little bit tangential to our hobby, but it seems like China is determined to upset the apple cart!

I was reading this morning that they are restricting the export of rare earth minerals, cutting the supply by 70%.

As they produce 97% of the total supply it would seem that prices will be heading higher in pretty short order.

It's not the rare earth minerals themselves that China has a monopoly on, it's the ability to manufacture stuff (like magnets) from them that nobody else cared about. Until now, that is.

Breotan is quite correct -- it is the processing that has moved to China.

Apparently a company called Molycorp are re-opening a mine in California, but are struggling to raise share capital.

And to add to the supplier vote, K&J Magnetics are a first class operation.
