I'm painting a new army and this time I wanna get serious about it I have been practicing blending and all other Technics on some old minis.So if you got any tips on painting a tournament army like what judging look for.My Army is Space Wolves with Inquisition allies,And i'm unsure what color to paint my allies i'm thinking white/blue or grey/orange.Should I go for hard lining for my vehicles or blending ?,Should I do weathering,how much freehand should I do if any and what types of units should I pay most attention too.

I reckon for your allies, try to keep a hint of the colour from the space wolves, so maybe a bit of yellow and Space Wolves grey here and there. Then a nice contrasting colour like red would work well on them. I think they look at the army as a whole, so... If you think you have time to blend all the highlights on vehicals, go for it, if not, do more work on freehand on the vehicals as this would probably get more attention from the judges. I would have to say, just stay as neat as possible!

bases first:

try to find a way to make good looking bases that are not too time consuming and not just plain sand bases.

i use cork and sand.cork is painted with a mix of white/grey(80/20 mix) and washed with bhadab black.

when i paint my space wolves i apply the grey with a spray gun to get a smooth surface(much better then with a brush)

use techniques you have a good grasp of.

paint troop markings on your tanks(freehands) and add bigger(not too big) freehands.
bit of weathering,but not too much.

i think for your allies you should colors with a strong contrast to the space wolves.

Step 1 is to get the judges attention. The judge is going to look at 20 (or 100) armies in about an hour. You need to make them look twice.

Chose a collection of light/bright colors. Tournaments are frequently held in places with terrible lighting. Your army needs to stand out reguardless.

The allies should share the same color theme - they don't need to match, but they need to be part of the over all army.

Hard high lights or black lined shades are both good looking on the table top. Don't over do it - these techneques can fail when the judge takes a closer look.

Step 2 - close inspection. Now that you have the judge's attention, you need to wow them with detail.

Convert characters and show piece figures. Take extra care to smooth high lights & add free hand. Judges will be looking at these models from about 6 inches away.

Add in little "got ya" bits to the army. Clever conversions in squads. Free hand on banners or vehicles. The more times you make the judges look, the higher your score will be.
