I guess GW changed their minds about the whole no tickets at the door.

"NEW! Having trouble getting the punters in are they? In times gone there wouldn't have been tickets to sell on the door I'm sure.

Glad I bought mine months ago. I'm actually not that excited to be going, it sounds like there is a lot of waiting in line for everything. Hopefully I am very wrong.

But if it isn't any fun I'm sure there is a bar in Baltimore somewhere...

Thanks,

If US is anything like UK you will wait an interminable amount of time whilst the que outside gets bigger and bigger, then the doors will open, you'll shuffle round until you reach the start of your Odyssey.... There will be ques, pushing and shoving, with lots of space to enable you to get to your next bout of pushing and shoving.

Haha... Nah, Games Day here is nothing like that... well, with one exception... the Forge World line. :(

Oh, yes, there are bars. This is Baltimore! My favorite area is Fells Point. You can take a water taxi from the convention center. Here is a list of bars: http://fellspoint.us/component/option,com_sobi2/catid,9/Itemid,39/

The neighborhood has some cobblestone streets and bar after bar after bar. Have a drink in one, walk next door, have another, etc. Good fun!

Here is the wikipedia entry, which may do a better job introducing Fells point. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fells_Point,_Baltimore

Seconded! Not only is there a passable bar right across the street from the convention center right next to a hotel (you can just stagger blindly home to your room!), the whole Fells Point area is awesome. Get some local seafood, too, while you are there.

Well thank the Emperor for that! Now if I decide on a whim that I need to get into a trade show for a company that has a pathological fear of showing off upcoming products (at their own trade show), I know that I can buy a ticket at the door. Phew! Thanks GW for taking a load off my mind. And here I was thinking I'd miss out on the chance to see nothing at this year's show.

What will they think of next? Perhaps a bi-monthly newsletter that tells you about upcoming products without ever actually telling you what the upcoming products are?

Oh wait...

I'm with you. I haven't gone in years because they recycle their content from one year to the next and bring absolutely nothing worth talking about to these events outside of Europe.

If I'm down town and I haven't already missed the 40k seminar I may go. But I have doubts.

The problem I have with that list is it's all hobby related and not industry related. Every single thing on that list is something you do at any one of their thousands of hobby centers throughout the whole US. And while that's all fine and good, it's not something worthy of a day long event (I remember when it was a whole weekend including fridays) and a $25 upfront fee. Especially when a lot of the people who attend the events are people you see regularly because (up until this year anyway) people tended to go to their local gamesday.

Not to mention if you aren't in the tournaments (they even have tournaments at these things anymore?) with a registered table, you damn near have to slit someones throat to have a chance at playing a game or 3 with your friends.

And even though some of the developers will be there, they always act like they were forced to be there. Every single time. The only people who seem genuinely interested in the event and its attendees are the forgeworld people. And the problem with them has always been they are so popular you've got to stand in line for 45mins to see them.

The US is significantly larger than Europe and that's why it had so many Games Days. But if all they're going to be is a 8 hour event where people do little more then hang out what makes them think people will pay to travel to Baltimore (or wherever they're held) to do it?

It's the same in a lot of cities. Ever been to New York? You go from wonderful happy land to watch your back cause you may be knifed any moment within half a block. Especially if you're walking down times square.

At least in Baltimore you have a transitional period between suburbia and ghetto

But yea, having lived here for my whole life I can pretty much tell you to not get off the lightrail within 2 stops above or below the stadiums. The convention center is really one of the last stops on the lightrail you feel safe. But the inner harbor and fells point are amazing places. Well worth the visit and the convention center is really right in the heart of the inner harbor. Tons to do.

No way. Its only the *trashy* ghetto when you see the emergency blue light police poles. As someone I know says, "Baltimore is like the greatest city in the world! It says it on the bus stop benches!" And by "like", he means "approximately".

Seriously, though, its not THAT bad.

Edit: forgot to include the quote...

To follow up upon this I would ask when is the Baltimore GD? If it's before the UK one the chance of anything new being revealed (given that Dark Eldar are being revealed at the UK GD*) is slim to nil.

* If that is the case, maybe 'something they have never done before' will be revealed the day after GD UK.

This weekend. Maybe they'll surprise us and actually tell us something??? They seem obsessed with surprising us all for some reason. This is the perfect opportunity!

Given that only the new High Elves fit into the supposed 'before Dark Eldar' slot maybe they'll preview them, by which I mean actually show the figures.

Hi There,
We have some exciting news for those of you attending Games Day Baltimore on Saturday – not only will Paul Rudge be unveiling our next Imperial Armour book, but Tony Cottrell will be presenting an exclusive seminar and Q&A on all things Forge World. Read on for more details.

The Seminar begins at 4:15pm – but make sure you are there early, because only 80 seats are available and it will be first come, first served. US Games Workshop staff will be able to give you more information, so be sure to ask about this fantastic opportunity when you enter the venue.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

That kind of stuff is why GD is so boring...A seminar? What is this? A job fair?

Can't they make it sound more fun? Like:

A Forgeworld Fiesta! Saturday from 4:15 to 5:15! Bring your own beer. That crazy ash-whole tony cantrall will be playing beer pong near the life-sized space marine, so look for him!

The year I went, the guest speaker told me they were instructed not to tell us anything, so that the news could be saved for the UK GD. I told him "you must feel they're wasting your time sending you here to keep quiet" his reply was one of those looks that said "yep."

It is unfortunate, but GW is after all a UK based company, so it's understandable that they want to make their homeland Games Day the absolute best. With the Internet, digital cameras (technology) news spreads faster than ever. Since the North America Games Day is before the UK's, most of the anticipation will have been lost for any new releases / rumour confirmation.

Then they should move the date, or give us some smaller things. FW is giving us more than GW is.

Nerfing everybody else is a poor way of making yourself the absolute best. As Mythos says, moving the dates or just making announcements more than a month and a half in advance (so that the GD season covers releases for the entire following year, and so has more morsels to share between the different events) would be better.

Agreed. A customer is a customer, they should all get the same respect regardless of where they live. GW is a global company with a global customer base and they have to treat all their customers as if they are equally important or else those customers will find another company with which to do business.

I've been to every Games Day ever held in Maryland and they used to do wonderful 40K upcoming product seminars up until just a few years ago. It's a shame they've no interest in doing that kind of thing at all any longer.

Meanwhile, I'm preparing for Games Day choosing my Golden Demon entries and preparing the arrangement of my Armies On Parade display. Much of what I'm bringing is visible in my Dakka Gallery for anyone who might be interested. I'm sure I'll some of you there. Have fun!
