So apparently there's a new Cawdor skill to help with controlling bomb rats. Also, no one who has primary access to this skill can take bomb rats.

Excellent.

I am very glad I was able to sell my hardcover books for this edition. Even at only a 25% net return, it was worth it. What a frelling train wreck.

My books arrived, but my actual minis, packed in a different box but from the same order with the same shop and with nearly identical routing numbers, went to the wrong fething town somehow. Bloody Royal Mail, I swear… nice of you to apologise in the app, but really?

Yeah I should sell mine too. At least I stopped buying books. The new Cawdor mechanics look fun and refreshing but otherwise the quality is a travesty. I mean, look at the new Cawdor gang terrain. It has incendiary traps, all they did was slap on another new weapon profile. How does it work? How does it trigger? Can it be disarmed? Can it be shot? Who knows. GW sure doesn't care. Then there's the new Cawdor Holy Gang Relic. 30 credits for a 13" booble that gives +1 to hit and +1 to wound. This will make Cawdor more Ranged efficient than van Saar! And compared to Escher's relic that cost 100 and does almost nothing? And then the weapon profile pages, I would recommend everyone to stay far away from those pages, preferably rip them out so you never accidentally reference them. Possibly neglible for the incorrect sawn off shotgun profiles because that weapon is so bad no one should use it anyway?

Minis look good IMO, but will use them as ecclesiarchy preachers and nut-jobs for other 40k related gaming, and one box is plenty. It is of course sold out though Does GW even want my money?

Is the rulebook included in Hive War different from the standalone rulebook which GW still sells as the one and only rulebook?

main rule mostly the same but gang list and fighter skills are completely different than "gang of the underhive" or the "house of x". book

Gang list and fighter skills about Hive War and just Hive War you mean? Or are you saying that House of X books are becoming obsolete and they'll be replaced by new books?

I'm asking because I'd like to know which books are going to remain valid as I'm starting a Necromunda group but we don't have much experience with this specific game.

Hive War only has two gang lists and they’re set up for skirmish games not campaigns.

There are currently two campaign lists for each House gang; the six in Gangs of the Underhive and the ones in each of the six House of… books. You can use whichever you want in your campaign but starting a gang using one book then changing over to the other later will require work.

The Book of… books are slightly different; they do have gang lists in them, but they aren’t “house” gangs and they are also campaign option books with alternative/supplemental rules you can use in place of or add do the standard campaign in the rule book.

Ah ok, no I'm familiar with 2018 Rulebook and all House of X books, except the new cawdor's one.

I just wanted to know if standard Necromunda's campaigns were still going to be played using the 2018 rulebook and the already published House of X books instead of a 2021 rulebook and an updated wave of House of X books.

Hive War has 6 gang lists and nothing prevents you from building a gang there and use in a campaign, however all books provide different versions of a gang so it of course will be different depending on what book used to create a gang.

Personally I would use a mix of all rule books as they all have some unique and useful parts. All rulebooks are different from each other. There are many different versions to play.

Wee bit disappointed in the background side of things. Just seemed shorter and less interesting than the preceding four books.

I mean what’s there isn’t bad as such. Just comparatively bland.

I still can't decide if House of Chains was really good and the rest were progressively less so, or the bar set for the expectation of the following books was set so high that it would be hard to match.

I’ve enjoyed the other four greatly, as they really dived into the history and personality of the Clan Houses.

But this one felt overwhelmed by the Redemptionist connection, with the Redemption being their path to Clan status.

I mean it’s not bad by any stretch of the imagination. It just feels a wee bit anaemic to my mind compared to the others.

It’s still preferable to the original background which didn’t really put that much of a difference between the Clan Houses. Just wish it had been a bit more nitty gritty and less, well, Standard Template Religious Hypocricy.

Tonight I’ll be delving into the various Paths. Perhaps I’ll have a better view of it once I’ve seen how those work in-game. And hey, I’m still awaiting my Delaque book. If the models shown off are anything to go by, I should be in for a treat.

On one hand, not every little secret has to be revealed in the inevitable sequel, but the fluff didn't go over anything that wasn't already fairly well known even in the 90s. Some kind of weird twist would have been interesting for future supplements or hooks for crazy themed conversions or something.
The paths are hot garbage compared to the other House benefits that you just pay credits for (if that) and they WORK. Roll dice, to roll dice, for an effect when your leader is out of action or you have someone eating a CdG? 'Yisssssss, exactly. As. Planned...'
Though I have to admit, the mental image of Cleetus yelling 'Parkour!' and pinballing down a set of terrain elicited a sensible chuckle.
It also feels like 'Redemptionist' would have been better as a template that is overlaid an existing gang, like Chaos Corruption or Genestealer Infection.

Here's my review of the new Cawdor book. Disclaimer: The game is fun even if the rules quality is not. These findings are reported by many people and the purpose is to show what problems players may need to consider before or during games, also to give some insight into what quality to expect and everyone can make their own opinion whether this is worth their money or not.

INTERNAL CONFLICTS
- Hive Preacher: Counts as 3 fighters when generating Faith dice in the End phase, if "on the battlefield and not Seriously Injured".
**** Comment: The rules for generating Faith dice also requires the fighter not to be Broken.
- Hive Incensive (Gang Terrain): Deployed minimum 6" away from enemy fighters.
**** Comment: Universal rule for Gang Terrain specifies that deployment happens before fighters. So deploying outside 6" of enemy fighters makes no sense.
- Caged Heretic (Gang Terrain): Deployed minimum 6" away from enemy fighters.
**** Comment: Universal rule for Gang Terrain specifies that deployment happens before fighters. So deploying outside 6" of enemy fighters makes no sense.

EXTERNAL CONFLICTS (CONFLICT WITH PREVIOUS PUBLICATIONS)
- Hexagrammic fetish listed as field armour.
**** Comment: Is this an update or should it still be Wargear?
- Heavy club got Concussion.
**** Comment: Is this an update or a mistake?
- Sawn-off shotgun (p120) ammo (Solid & Scatter) is mostly copy-pasted from regular Shotung (but retained the correct traits including Plentiful).
**** Comment: Step 1) Copy similar profile (do NOT copy the same profile from a previous book!). Step 2) update traits. Step 3) ...
- Shotgun (p120) ammo Inferno got Am 4+ and Knockback.
**** Comment: What happened to Am 5+ and Blaze? Another copy-paste error?
- Hand flamer, Laspistol, Stubgun & dumdum (p121) got Combi.
**** Comment: Copy-paste error marathon? If Hand Flamer actually was Combi, it should also have Unstable.
- Ogryn (Brute) profile is changed to the same as Ambot.
**** Comment: Copy-paste error.

ERRORS
- Redemptionist Juve (Zealot) Promotion specifies "Promotion (Redemptionist Specialist)", stating that "...this fighter may be promoted to become either a Cawdor Specialist, or a Redemptionist Specialist, as the controlling player chooses", but also "When a fighter is promoted in this way, they will from now on count as Redemptionist Specialist for the purposes of determining which equipment skill sets they can access. ...gain all special rules associated with a Redemptionist Specialist.".
**** Comment: Probably a copy-paste error from the Cawdor Juve, which can be promoted to both Cawdor and Redemptionist Ganger (Specialist).
- Redemptionist Juve (Zealot) Promotion lists special rules that are lost when promoted, "Fast Learner" is listed twice here.
**** Comment: Another copy-paste error, one of the "Fast Learner" should be replaced by "Hot-Headed".
- Incendiary Traps (Hidden Traps) have no description other than weapon profile.
**** Comment: How are these triggered? Can they be shot?
- The weapon profile for Autogun/Polearm has Am 5+.
**** Comment: This is an existing error, this weapon includes a "Reclaimed Autogun", not "Autogun". Compare this to the Flamer/Autogun (Combi) which has the actual Autogun profile.
- Polearm costs 30 credits, while Polearm with Reclaimed Autogun costs 20.
**** Comment: 10 credits discount to get a free gun? You can upgrade to master-crafted and it's still cheaper. This is essentially a non-option (no-one will take it), or in worst case a trap for new players who aren't aware. The Polearm should effectively be removed from the book.
- Tithed to the Frateris Militia (p85): The last sentence mentions a fighter being "seconded", when it should say "tithed".
**** Comment: It was House Greim that causes fighters to be seconded, but the sentence that appears to be copy and pasted does not contain the word "seconded" in House of Chains. Strange indeed.
- Blessed of Cawdor (House Favour): For 1 cycle, gain a free Juve with the Gang Leader special rule. The actual leader loses the Gang Leader special rule.
**** Comment: Gang Leader only says that the fighter can't voluntarily retire and must be replaced if killed (or otherwise removed from the gang). What about Leading by Example (12")? Group Activation (2)? RAW, the only effect does is giving a free Juve that can't be retired. This would even allow the actual leader to retire.
- Klovis (Agent): Got Devotional Frenzy (skill).
**** Comment: This has no effect on an Agent.
- The Headsman (Bounty Hunter) follows the "Path of the Zealot".
**** Comment: This path doesn't exist. It should be Path of the Fanatic because it has all the same mentioned warband examples in fluff and headsman profile descriptions in the book.

NOTES
- Redemptionist Juve has the Hot-headed special rule which so far has been uniquely linked to Prospects (Specialist Juve).
- Holy Gang Relic (Gang Terrain) is ridiculously powerful, giving +1 to hit & wound within 6" for only 30 credits. Compare to the much more situational Escher gang relic at 100 credits, it may seem that the Holy Gang Relic should be limited to close combat only?

CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS
- Explicitly specifies the exact number of fighters in the Guild
- Rattus Tatterskin (Hive Scum) generates Faith dice as a normal Cawdor fighter. Can perform Articles of Faith (Path of the Doomed). Can be hired by both Law-abiding and Outlaw.
- Headsman (Thane's Executioner) generates Faith dice as a normal Cawdor fighter. Gained Leading By Example (6").
- Butcher's Cleaver (CGC) is renamed to Cleaver.
- Terrifying (CGC) is renamed to Fearsome Reputation (Klovis).
- Stig-Shambler (Brute):
---- Starts with twin-linked heavy stubber, cost is adjusted accordingly (+40).
---- Starts with flak (+10) for free.
---- Lost option to replace heavy club with polearm.
---- Gained Shooting (Primary), lost Savant (Primary).
- Rogue Factoria: Before the battle, place 2 Loot caskets instead of 1 (if the scenario doesn't specify any special rules for loot caskets).
**** Comment: Loot caskets are very minor, so this update should be highly situational.
- Cawdor's House Favour result of 2 results in a Ganger or Juve to be removed from the gang.
**** Comment: This is a very small change, but all other House gangs can choose any fighter to remove.
- Gutterforged cloak can now be equipped in addition to other armour.
- Polearm is consistently listed with -1 to hit (short range), this was not clear from internal conflicts in N18 (Gangs of the Underhive).

UNIVERSAL 'HOUSE OF ...' HOUSE GANG CODEX UPDATES AND ISSUES
These are updates and flaws in the universal structure of house gangs and can be expected to be repeated for all house gang codexes:

- Gang Hierarchy specifies Cool tests for fleeing the battlefield is in the End phase. This is a change from start of the round. This is also according to Hive War rulebook (N21).
- House Agents:
---- What happens when Petitioning for House Agent and the gang gets fined (2D6*10 credits), but can't pay?
---- The fined result (16+) will never trigger because no gang with 10+ Reputation is going to roll for Petition.
---- Since House Agents have a variable cost, what is their contribution to gang rating? Their Equipment rule state the free equipment you get for them should be accounted for when determining Gang Rating, but what is the base value of the House Agent? Generic has a rating of 40 or 80 credits? Special Character has rating of 100 or 200?
- Bounty Hunter (Generic):
---- Can equip items from the Trading Post, but does not specify any limitation in Rarity. The old (universal) generic Bounty Hunter could use items with rarity 10 or less.

Fluffwise, backgroundwise, Cawdor was a bit disappointing as there didn't seem to be much that was new. By comparison, the other House books so far have usually put some sort of new spin or twist on the old 1990's Houses, but Cawdor seems pretty much the same. They just seemed to have added on the old scavenger beggar theme. There is no explanation for how Cawdor can support such a huge population for example to get away with its inefficient hand picking scavenging ways. Might have been more interesting for example to have Cawdor dominate the waste reprocessing industry. All the effluent and sewage of the hives has to be reprocessed and if Cawdor had that as its "dominant" industry, that might explain their huge population, as the sewage gets reprocessed and used for things like fungus farms and the like. That would match the theme of the other House books giving each of the other Houses some form of dominant industry with Goliath smelting, Escher chemicals/pharmaceuticals, Orlock mining, Van Saar technical, and presumably Delaque information/services.

Wait, hold on, these aren't Forgeworld?

Games Workshop are not your friends. They are not a small dev trying their best. They are a multibillion dollar company making calculated decisions about how many costs they can cut, how lazy they can be about relases, and how much they can paywall. They will do it again. Stop giving them money for this.

Warhammer Community puts Forgeworld releases in their updates.

And, unfortunately, checked-out people and/or trolls then immediately try to will the product into being plastic.

It happened with FW's alternate Escher champs. And then their alternate Orlocks. And then the Phyrr cats.

Every time people in this thread go down the "could it be plastic?!" road it's not, and they're wrong.

p.s. but I still hope the Water Guild is plastic (in the same way that I hope when I get up and turn around there will be a pile of gold bullion there)

There were always guilds in the Lore that maintained the essential goods and services of the Hive but they weren’t meaningfully separated. You could take jobs for “guilders” to protect trade caravans but it was always implied to be entirely the merchant’s guild you interacted with and the others were either irrelevant or assumed to be subdivisions of the merchants.
Also, having actual models and defined stats is new.

Ah well.

Also on another note... they don't always note FW release on the weekly update, loads of Necromunda models and Blood Bowl figs have been advertised directly by FW themselves without note on the GW community page, so when they do show up on the weekly release splurge its not an unfair assumption to ponder if they are plastic. To suggest folks doing that are trolling is rather petty.
