So, I've read Legion (kinda cool, but largely meh), I've read the lexicanum page, I've read all the chaos 'dexes since 3e, but I still feel there's something missing. I'm aware that GW likes to leave things blank on certain topics, to create a sense of mystery and let players make their own fluff, so I guess what I'm asking for is opinions and theories on the legion. Or old fluff. I get the impression they have a small but highly dedicated fanbase who enjoy putting the puzzle together, and I'd like to hear from them in particular. Especially Alpharius, who's hinting and suggestion have lead me inexorably down this path of inquiry...

Okay, they have two primarch who are twins (Alpharius, Omegon)

they are a chapter based on deception, with non conventional tactic, alot of people dressed the same with the same equipment. And they all look like their primarch

one of their primarch(or maybe not) got killed by grandpa smurf( guiliman), debated since their chapter base on deception

and according to the novels, they are not against sacrificing 90% of their own force just to show off their strat

The problem with LEGION is that it changed pretty much everything, without really tell is anything.

So... there is a LOT out there, actually, but all of it is, at best, suspect.

Which, happily enough, would suit the Legion just fine!

Any good fan made alpha legion sites? I'd love to spend an evening immersing myself in the fluff. I also really want to start a warband of alpha legionnaires, but I don't think I can plan the visual theme until I'm deeply familiar with the story.
Legion didn't really cut it for me. The only part I really liked about it (apart from some of the imperial army stuff) was that it brought into question the legions' true loyalties. Is that an old or a new piece of fluff?

This is a new spin to the old background, in which previously they would shout "For the Emperor!" in order to confuse their Imperial enemies, most of whom probably had never seen a Space Marine up to that point.

Now, they may indeed be "For the Emperor!", only in not quite the way many wold think they should be!

I am Alpharius...

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

the thing about the alpha legion is that their whole schpiel is being mysterious. hence the fluff is very limited.

This is basically their old (pre-legion) fluff, near as I can remember it:

The Alpha Legion was the last to be created and felt like thy had alot to prove. Alpharius was a tactical genius and loved to use stealth and surprise tactics, so they wasted alot of time wiping out the enemy in needlessly complex ways in order to show that they were just as good, even better, than the other legions. When Guiliman called Alpharius on this they got into a fight, hence the Ultramarines and the Alpha Legion hate each others guts. They didnt participate directly in the heresy (at least its central battles) because they were too far away; I dont remember how Horus was able to corrupt them but presumably it was because they felt like they werent getting their dues in the imperium. After the Heresy they did not flee to the eye of terror like the other legions; they continued to fight as a group until eventually they had a showdown with the Ultramarines. The ultramarines invaded their battle barge and Guiliman killed Alpharius in single combat; after which everyone thought the legion would fall to pieces. However their command structure was very resilient and the legion remained coherent and organized, but in small bands operating over widely scattered distances. They hide out in small groups, in secret asteroid bases, in the under-parts of hive-cities, and any other kind of sneaky covert location from which they can disrupt the imperium. They use cultists in order to infiltrate their targets. They dont show up in force very often because it takes them so long to set up their operations, but when they do they achieve total surprise and usually wipe their enemies pretty fast. They don't live in the eye of terror and dont have any special love of gods/demons/mutations etc, rather they use these things as one more kind of tool when they have to, but generally keep their distance.

No one knows their home planet. Their hydra symbol represents their resiliency and ferocity (ie if you cut off one head of a hydra it just grows more, so its really hard to kill the thing). Everyone is named Alpharius. They use cultists alot, really alot. They're like ninjas in space. Basically. And they're very mysterious. Very very mysterious.

The new stuff is kind of weird by comparison. Very conspiratorial, which makes sense I guess...

A lot of what AbaddonFidelis just typed out may or may not still be valid.

Before LEGION, absolutely!

After LEGION, no idea!

AbaddonFidelis and Alpharius:

In your opinions, what would be the best way to add some true Alpha Legion flavour to a CSM force?
I mean, paintjobs obviously, and no daemons, but would it be in keeping to use a lot of older-mark loyalist armour mixed in with chaos parts? Would purity seals be out of place? (I guess they wouldn't post-Legion, but I think I might be swinging towards a more 2e/3e flavour) I can see the older version of the Legion using purity seals as another way of confusing and confounding loyalists. Really, I made this thread to inspire and direct me on modelling this warband. So visually, and with the army list, what recurring themes should I incorporate?

well for the army list I would just use 3.5 guidelines. no marks, no cults. I dont remember if they coudl take god-specific demons in 3.5..... I'd probably stay away. Nothing that indicates chaos worship. Tke cultists. There are a number of places to get rules for these. 3.5 codex, LATD Apocalypse data sheet (available at the GW website) guard codex, codex eye of terror, etc. They're not exactly tournament legal but as long as you aren't abusing the rules and you have a legit fluffy army people will let you play it. If not just have a 100% legal list written up and play that. Whatever. Their loss.

For modelling.... no mutations or blasphemous runes or anything too chaosy. Just strait up and down marines. Anything dragon-y or scale-y would go well with their fluff. Hydra motifs. Camoflauged armor maybe since they don't really fixate on symbols and heraldry like the other legions do. There have been a couple different color schemes proposed. blue and silver is what you see on lexicanum, though they had this kind of really dark green and silver in the 3.5 chaos codex.

I've never seen someone run an alpha legion army as long as I've been playing it sounds like a fun project.

About what Alpharius said: yeah Legion pretty much wiped the slate clean for these guys. Their fluff could change alot who knows? They're very mysterious......

oh I think their home planet is Bedok. Remember reading that somewhere.

The Alpha Legion has somehow become the 2nd most popular traitor Legion despite not really having much in the way of background:

I said it in another thread and I'll say it again.

We don't know what the hell the Legion is actually doing...and that's just the way they like it.

They're confusing buggers aren't they? Also, to be perfectly honest, it would be easier to play Alpha Legion with the normal SM codex than it would with the CSM codex, since they're so advertant to pretty much everything Chaos stands for . . .

They're not Chaos. Also, they are Chaos.

Alpharius is dead. He also isn't dead.

They're trying to destroy the galaxy. They're trying to save the galaxy.

They're basically space terrorists. They're basically the most tragically noble and heroic Space Marines ever.

Plus, they don't exist. Or maybe they do.

my tip is too ignore the things that contradict anything said in the horus heresy novels i know alot of people preffer the original back story but it doesnt differ that much the novels they have so much information and are so ace that i think it should be taken as the official story
