So I just finished painting the first of my Roughrider squad for my IG. Still need to base him. I am personally very happy with the results, please leave your feedback.

This looks awesome, you could add to this though, by adding something to the horse armour, like an imperial eagle or a personal insignia the rider would have.

It has been varified by John Hurt that the Ultramarines are indeed the greatest space marine chapter. |

Nice. How about a parts list/mini tutorial?

Parts list is easy enough to put right up...
I took my parts for this from:
- Empire Knightly Order Box (most of the parts are from here)
- Took the Torso and head off a random sprue I had left over.
- The End of the lance is from a HW Sprue, front end of the Mortar.
- The Carbine Lasgun/ Laspistol is off one of the old Tank Accessory Sprues.
Except for the head, torso, weapon and lance tip, everything is from the knightly order box.
I'll do up a tutorial sometime soon when I get around to the rest of the squad. Right now I'm focused on finishing off the paint work on a PLT of infantrymen.

Hmm, I can't seem to get over the conflict between Rennaissance-era barding and lower body and the Cadian upper body... I would have probably tried a different head and upper body.

Haha, I love the 'mortar bomb on a stick' approach to the hunting lance!
You might try to imperialise/modernise the mini a bit - as said above, stick some imperial aquilas on there. Maybe take the rucksacks that come on the HW sprues, stick them on hte flanks of the horses like saddlebags? My point is that right now he looks like a knight with a mortar bomb and a modern helmet. Some extra equipment would make him look more of a soldier.

I was thinking the same thing last night well working on my infantry, and took a look at a few of my tank sprues for some decent sized aquilas, and thinking about how the tied down packs would look on the side of a mount. For the aquilas I'll probably hand paint something on there or I'll put a decal down, my findings wer enot promising as the only thing the aquilas I have would do is make the horse look like a 40k flavor flav. Gonna keep looking though, my friend who play BA gets back from NB today and I'll check with him if hes got any decent stuff laying around in his masses of spare SM bitz.
Not to mention I was considering calling the lance an Ogryn rangefinder.

Completely understandable, there is some loss of style just from the fact that the RR is not with the rest of the army ATM. His armour matches the flak armour and carapace armour found on the rest of my guard, and I personally found it fit in quite well as a slotted flak platting armour or something along that lines that would allow Horse movement well still providing protection. As I said, he seems to fit in pretty well with the look of a armoured regiment of Cadian models, with all the infantry in the same coloured armour as him.

Don't like it at all. It looks even more out of place than a guy riding a regular horse in WH 40,000.

Change the colour of the horse. Grey horse with grey armour ridden by a rider in grey clothing makes it look like a statue and the pink skin a glaring contrast in a bad way. Try some sort of brown horse. And remember you don't need them to perfectly match.

The horse armor doesn't look sci-fiish enough. Maybe add some technological looking bits and stuff. And give it leg armor. Machine gun fire would tear right through the horse's legs.

That's what it needed! Shin guards on the forelegs would be perfect. That and a holster for the Lasgun (maybe from the SM Scout Bikes?) plus a couple of filters over the horse's nostrils. Time to hit eBay me thinks. Back in a bit.
