In almost every FPS video game out there(except maybe Borderlands. That game is just fun to go out into the middle of a firefight with a shotgun blazing), I am always the sniper. That's why it always bugs the hell out of me when people think "sniper" means "camping noob".
What do people here think of people who hide with a sniper rifle in multiplayer video games? Personally, I think it adds a considerable element of realism, and is a completely legitimate strategy. But of course I'm always the guy with the sniper rifle.

I am usually the guy with the sniper. However, I use a different approach to sniping. Instead of realism, I use the fastest RPM sniper in the game, load it up with an ACOG scope, hide, and peek out and unload. I usually play TC:R6V2, so you can see around corners. FPS, I'm with OP.

I'm an awful sniper, and for me it just doesn't feel as satisfying as blasting away at entire groups of enemies with heavy weapons or smashing someone in the face with the butt of a shotgun.
|
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I love using the Sniper Rifle. But the part that brings the games to total realism for me? is doing it without having someone spot your fire. This usually involves 3 or 4 shots and then move somewhere else. Big fun. Especially when the enemy go to where you were, and your not there but you can hit them from your new position. That really gets them

Depends how you really want to play a sniper. Sniper in most FPS are viewed selfish campers that relies on team mates acting as baits.
But thats not always true , for example rather than scoring easy kills on slower targets , i always try to take out enemy medics.
So even though my kill score doesnt look as good , it ensures enemy team will never make it to our line in one piece.

Actually, in Vietnam a sniper was watching the treeline when his bud went to go get some provisions. A vietcong sniper took a shot at the guy getting the provisions.
The US sniper had his bud running back and forth until he got the Vietcong sniper.
Anywho, sniping is great fun especially when you hide where they least expect it. Hit an enemy sniper a few times from a second story window and they'll start looking at that window, then you go to street level and pick him off.
I don't snipe as much as I countersnipe so if an enemy sniper is wreaking havoc I break out the big guns.

It really depends on the map for me wether I choose to snipe or "run & gun"
In a recent Modern Warfare 2 match playing Hardcore Teamdeath match on Estate(I think thats wat its called) I was lying outside of the house next to the greenhouse looking over into the top story of the blue building, a guy repeatedly goes into the top floor to be blasted by my 50 Cal. Shortly before the end of the match I shoot him again not only do I get the guy in the head but i get somebody behind him (not sure if he was in the building or not) also in the head with 1 bullet. Finished with like 8 kills to 2 deaths, shortly after the match i got mail, from the guy I killed over and over again, saying i was a (theres meant to be 2 emotes here) camping noob...
Now I dont know about you but surely I cant be called a camper as I was sniping, but not only that she/he (couldnt tell from the mail) was dumb enough to cotinually try get to the same spot. Seems to me they were trying to camp but i just got the better of em.
Anyway small rant over about how snipers are classed as "campers" when they really arnt.

I dont like games that allow snipers to be steady when standing up example MW and CS. It looses realism.
I also hate no limit amount of snipers in games. If it had realism then thier would be 4 snipers per team at max due to the training needed to use such weapons profesionally
otherwise I have no problem with snipers in games.

I think the camping nub reputation came from people firing one shot, missing, and then emptying the clip in an attempt to kill the target.
When I snipe I either relocate very quickly, or make sure I'm at a cross roads. Like in MW2, the deli in Rundown. Only way for the enemy to get me is to go into my field of fire.

My aim is usually terrible, so I tend to go with spray and pray. If a sniper is sniping and not camping, I'm okay with it. If you aim at spawn points/choke points etc. etc. without ever changing tactics/positions, you're a camper. If you keep on the move to keep getting a better vantage point, a clearer view of a target, getting different views of the map, you're a sniper. Pretty simple to me really.

I'm fine with it, I some time relish the challenge a good sniper gives me. My thought process when I get killed by a sniper at distance in BC2 is normally "nice shot, I probably shouldn't have stayed still to get off that last shot/heal a team mate/plant a bomb. I'm coming to get you know" and after which I try several things such as trying to out snipe them, hit them with a mortar or explosives. I don't mind if you don't move all game if your good as it is still a challenge. What really annoys me is when you enter a building and someones hiding under the staircase or firing from the attic trap door and doesn't move.
If I'm sniping, I try to help my team out as much as possible by hitting other snipers, high priority targets (normally medics) and by occasionally moving up to support with my pistol/stolen weapon.

Sniping is not realistic in games, its just boring imho..
Theres no leading or anything, so its just a gun that cant shoot fast, but is accurate. Why not use an M16, FAMAS, FAL? (MW2)

I only really play MW2, so thats my whole in-game sniping
In which case, i only ever use a rifle.
Allways the trusty bolt action intervention.
However, i cant sit still for love nor money, i have to be running about with it. (step in, quick/no scoping)
As for sitting back with it, i cant do it, but i have no problem with people that do.
In MW2 the only thing that does annoy me somewhat is in hardcore, and thats people with thermal/heartbeat sensor and silencer.
They just spend the whole game in 1 place.
Just bores me to the point i want to blow them up with something. (which i then get abuse for using RPG's lol)

Sometimes I stay in one spot FOREVER and the only reason I can and have to give is: Look at the view. I can see the entire map.
My favorite thing in hardcore is AUG with a thermal. It's effing hilarious. I outsniped the sniper and the guy next to him.

Dude you cant call a sniper a camper. That's how they play. They will never outfight a tank. Or a normal set-up soldier. They deal in subtlety. Now a guy with a rocket launcher hurling rockets from behind a corner as enemies come round it? that's camping. IMO

To me this is camping: hiding in this obscure corner and shooting people as they come by.
Not camping: you're hurt and rest against a wall to regenerate; random enemy comes by, random enemy now dead.

I would agree with this some snipers are fine but when half the players on a server are snipers it gets annoying.
I'll admit though I've always enjoyed walking up behind snipers in BC2 and stabbing them in the back.

I dont mind offensive snipers or snipers who are defending on defense maps but the guys who just camp in random locations waiting for 1 or 2 people per map to walk by kind of make me boggle.

For the most part I think its really difficult for a person with a sniper rifle to camp. They have to hide around a corner and get the guy as soon as he turns the corner. Quick scoping can work, but a shotgun with heartbeat sensor is a true camping kit.
Also, if I see a place where a lot of people are running back and forth then of course I'm going to cover it. If its a chokepoint, then I can single handedly hold down the entire enemy team wile my team finds other ways to exploit the situation.

Luckily, game designers design maps where if you snipe over a chokepoint or high-traffic area that there is a way to deal with you. I often just go right next to the camper and stand behind him, just looking at him to see if he notices me, after 5 seconds, he gets shot and dies.

I snipe. A lot. Now, by "snipe" I don't always mean pickin off enemies left and right. More often than not I'm spotting and directing team mates because the enemy is sprinting by with too much cover to effectively lead and fire upon. Sure I may not go 15-0 but hey, if I help my team win, then that's what really matters.

I really don't get the problem with camping all together, but that's for a different thread.
Sniping gets a bad rap because you can technically 1-2 shot someone without them noticing you. However, someone using their brains should find out where you are and return the favor, since it's most likely you're not going to move.

I sometimes play sniper. But I also shoot maybe 2 times and then my ass is moving to a new spot. Im not that great though, I prefer the heavy weapons personally. Unloading on a group is just awesome. Specially when they scatter due to not expecting it. Thats great fun.
