I don't really think it was a "compromise" as much as it was he was the only black guy in the race. Most people don't care about how he's half black. Everyone just says he's black, so it didn't really effect anything. It wasn't people at the polls were thinking " hmmmmm, well, he's only HALF black, so I guess it's okay to vote for him."

America has always been fairly simplistic when it comes to race. Looking black = black, anything beyond that is inconsequential.

Pretty much all the non-blacks say he's "black".

OTOH, a lot of blacks say he's not *really* "black".

What do you mean? Do you think a person with racist thoughts sees a person who's half black and treat them only half as racist?

I think it is difficult to be half racist to anyone and shades of gray usually confuse people who think in terms of black/white.

You can be more discriminatory to one shade over another, but it will still highlight the ignorance that such action is based on in the first place.
