Hey guys,

Reading the "lamest chapter" thread got me all interested in the minor Chapters and I looked some of them up on Lexicanum.

There are some original stories and they're quite cool (like that Dragon chapter that grows bone weapons on their limbs)... So I thought it'd be intriguing if people compiled extracts/links about chapters that deserve more recognition for their stories.

Here's one I've found that I like:

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Mantis_Warriors

The fact that they are not allowed to recruit makes me think they'd have interesting fluff...

Do the Lamenters count?

I like that they offer some contrast to all the "we're super hardcore" chapters by being just as good as anyone else, but being unlucky enough for it not to make a difference.

Heh sure they do, all I know about them is that they clearly have the worst mobile phone reception in the Imperium since the Blood Angels have not succeeded in giving them a call ;P

The relictors should really get some more attention. I like the idea that they are still loyal to the imperium after everyting thats happened to them. Also they seem to have managed to control thermselves enough to have used chaos against itself with few side effects which is unusual.

Agreed!

I loved them back in the INDEX ASTARTES days.

But, in somewhat typical GW fashion, the latest SM Codex has either reset the clock on them or completely changed their history...

I offer you a first founding chapter that fits the bill perfectly.... the Iron Hands. I may be one of the few but I find their background extremely interesting with the whole metal over flesh concept. They were given one book that showed some cool background, even if it portraited them as total dicks.

The problem is, they are the least written of the 1st foundings and what does get written of them in the heresy shows them simply getting their ass kicked. As a result, I think they are the most famous and least relavent chapter to be in the game with a cool story.

Way back in the RT days I was intrigued by the MW fluff. Been running them ever since.

It's been a fun process trying to puzzle out the impact of their punishment for the Badab War on the chapter... how it would change their structure, tactics & attitudes. Not that my version is in any way definitive... but I guess that's the beauty of the undeveloped chapters.... there's a little bit there so they are an "official" part of the 40k universe, but the details are up to the hobbyist to work out for themselves. Bad as they are, the Goto books had at least given the chapter a little "buzz" and I'm sure the Forge World Badab War releases over the next six months will add to that for all the involved chapters.

I'm used to being the only MW player I've ever known... I suspect that won't be the case in a year or so.

I still play my Relictors as loyal renegades, after being smashed by the Grey Knights. That fluff's great!

It is great - only C: SM 5th edition has reset the clock to "The Relictors are rather naughty, and as such, a close eye is being kept upon them!"

I think the "Steel Brethren" who get a nod in Codex CSM are worth mentioning. "Extensive use of transports and Drop pods." In a codex with no drop pods. Riiiight...

Black Dragons. They are mutants fighting FOR the imperium. They have a Death Company that they dont have to kill. They also have the same luck as the lamentors. And about no official fluff. I plan on including them in a little Campaign I am writing (Will include NO first founding chapters), but even then, thats not much.

Looked them up on Lexicanum: They have Ultramarine and Dark Angel geneseed? How's that work?

I imagine they were probably started with geneseed from one chapter, say UM, then had some kind of set back, and were re-inforced with some from the DA, and over time it would intermingle throughout as older marines die, and new recruits are drawn.

Astral Knights have a pretty good background... well i say background it was a pretty cool story about them dying but the chapter that was made to replace them, the Sable Swords i think, have littl bits of background including a captain that's ben kidnapped by Dark Eldar but all signs (psychic readings etc) point to him being alive so they are still looking for him.

Doom Eagles, for being completely fatalistic and yet they still fight on. Maybe because they have nothing to lose. I'm also a fan of Mentors and Red Scorpions (are those the perfection/purity guys?)

I agree. The Relictors have an amazing backstory. I wrote some fluff for a Radical Inquisitor who is rumored to have links to them and may possibly even be in contact with them. I'll post it once it has been enriched it a little.

You know, I have an old white dwarf with the rules for some cursed founding chapters. They get cursed knights, abominations, special librarian psychic powers, and great mutations. Should/can I post up the rules?

The issue would be that the game is set in M41, and most sourcebooks are written from that perspective. As I understand it, the Relictors were declared traitor and almost wiped out by the Inquisition some time after the 13th Black Crusade, which would have been in early M42. So from the 41st Millennium point of view the Codexes have, the Relictors are still at the "keep an eye on them" stage.

alexwars1 wrote:You know, I have an old white dwarf with the rules for some cursed founding chapters. [...] Should/can I post up the rules?
I wouldn't. Even a years-old WD article is still copyrighted to GW.

Once you post it, PM me a link. This has peeked interest. Is it similar to the traitor rules found in the WH codex?

It was an old Index Astartes article that gave you some alternate units and options to make a Chapter that was Cursed.

I am pretty sure it was called "Cursed Companies".

Playing repaint-BA with Death Company heavy would probably give a similar feel.
