We just had a really fun mini-tournament at our local this week that I wanted to share with the community.

We called it a "Mini-Ard Boyz."

The premise is this:

Everyone brings a single unit and possibly a transport for said unit (dedicated or not).

Each unit may have up to three IC's attached to it, but must obey its FOC. All IC's were permenantly attached to their squads and effectively became squad upgrade characters, like a super veteran sergeant (couldn't be singled out in combat). Special characters are allowed.

No painting requirement.

There is no points limit on the unit.

You play on a 4'x4' board with no terrain.

The player with less models gets +1 on the roll to go first.

If one player has only MC's or Vehicles in their army they get +1 to go first.

You can steal the initiative as usual.

Random game length.

Everything must be WYSIWYG or easily identifiable counts as.

There were 6 rounds (rounds were super short).

4 rounds of one on one.

One round of a 4 way free for all.

One round with the field split into two teams and the two sides played one another on a 6'x4' board with no terrain.

$5 Entry fee, winner takes all.

Scoring:
For every enemy unit destroyed= 2KP
For every enemy Transport destroyed= 1KP
Keep a running tally over every mission, every mission is KP. Player with most KP at the end is the winner. The means that if someone goes on a tear in the last two missions, they can catch up from a deficit.

So, what you get is the most over-the-top units you can come up with. 2,000 point+ units of pure death, often in a transport vehicle.

The event was a laugh as everyone had a great time coming up with the most ridiculous power combos imaginable and smashing each other. It was actually a lot of fun and took some thought. With no terrain, it was all about who got the charge off or getting into combat before being shot to death. But since most units were in transports you didn't want to charge and destroy their tank only to get counter charged by the deathstar unit inside. It took some careful positioning and some risky gambles.

One guy brought the Deceiver as he can ignore an assault and is immune to most shooting. He just chased vehicles and blew them up in assault, chipping away KP's.

Some of the units were crazy, and it was funny to see how things turned on the dice. Every table had cheers and boos when the dice would totally change the course of the game.

The final team game was a riot too, just crazy, epic battles between every special character at once, sometimes two of them fighting one another!

It was very fun, the entire thing was run and finished in a 4 hours. I highly recommend it to any club looking for a very fun, and funny change of pace to the usual routine.

We had units of 10 Wolf Guard in termie armor with Arjac, Logan, Ragnar and Njal! Or the same unit in power armor loaded into an LRC.

Black Templars command squads with every model in artificer armor with a storm shield and power weapon, and 3 characters attached.

Ork diversified Nobs in a FW battlewagon with maxed out rokkits, combi rokkits, Ghaz and a Mek with KFF.

You can come up with some crazy stuff, like a 50 man IG blob squad with 5 las cannons, 5 plasma guns, each sarge with a p.fist, p.pistol and m.bombs, with 5 commissar's all with p.fists and p.pistols. Attach Yarrick, a commissar lord and a priest.

The possibilities are endless, think about what you could to with farsight and crew with no points limit!

Very fun concept, which I recommend.

So no points limit, up to 3 IC's, and any one unit - FOC not applied, right? No terrain on the tables either, huh?

Sounds like it was fun, a lot like Dash's Arena of Death but a bit more lenient in unit selection. Two jetseers + jetarch with lance/mandibles/fusion gun + 10 jetlocks with destructors, embolden, enhance would be pretty wicked.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

@gavin

But not with so many Space Wolves running round. That seer council could go down pretty hard. Poor Tyrannids in this. They wouldn't have a chance....

Sounds like a good time Reece

Yeah Bugs would get boned.

You could alter it for some books, like Bugs and crons. They could attach say, any HQ to a squad. Make it fair.

Like, 20 super stealers with an attached Tyrant and Hive Lord.

I was waiting to see the 30 death company with dante, lemartes, chaplain and astorath!

Swarmlord (with Tyrant Guard) + Tyranid Prime + Tyranid Prime + Parasite would be funny.

Not really good, I think, but funny.

You said no FOC or yes to FOC?
Or did you mean no FOC but units themselves must be FOC valid?

Yes on Special Characters for every army. Some armies are better with generic characters though.

The player that won had 10 wolf guard termies with two cyclones, lots of storm shields, thunder hammers and frost blades, logan, ragnar, arjac, and njal.

A Daemon player with 8 crushers and three heralds on juggers did OK until he ran into a land raider!

Another Daemon player with 12 flamers and three heralds did well, too.

I was thinking 19 thousand sons, with sorcerer, abbadon and either Typhus or a lash sorcerer would be pretty brutal. They would just have a hard time catching vehicles if someone wanted to play for a tie.

I think the 30-man Deathcompany could have taken them, especially if they had jump packs which they could since there were no point limits

The problem is that they can't take invul saves and in combat pretty much everyone had power weapons which negates the FnP.

There are 30 of them!!!!!!! If most of them are armed with power weapons it's like 120 St5 PW attacks at I5 rerolling to hit and wound! Who needs invul's at that point? That's not counting Lemartes, Astorath, and Dante (Hello hit and run). It could be done.......

I'm just imagining what Ghazghkull + 10 nobs + Old Zogwort could do.

Unless his squiggy powers couldn't work in this mission.

The guy that brought the Deceiver.. How'd he do in the grand scheme of things? I can't imagine he held up that well throughout the whole tourney. I am curious though. What was that average points value of the units? This sounds like uber fun, cept I play Necrons and my choices would be extremely limited. I'm with Dash on the Orks ftw... ooo or maybe A crazy long fang squad with Logan, and two rune priests.

No Tau super Farsight unit, although it would have been bitchin.

The deceiver did OK. He would blow up a vehicle and then avoid combat. He did better int he group battles.

Most units were over 1,000 points by a pretty good margin.

We are talking about revising the rules to allow only 2 IC's and that any HQ unit can count so that Crons could take 20 warriors and attach Nightbringer to them like an IC. Or Nids could take 20 super stealers and attach the Swarlord and a tricked out Hive Tyrant. Damones could take 8 crushers and add fateweaver and bloodthirster, etc.

That way every army is about equal.

It really was fun, I highly recommend trying it out.

I'd probably take the two Necron Lords on foot, one with a veil, staff of light, res orb, the other with a nightmare shroud, phase shifter, warscythe, destroyer body in a 20 man squad. Only 600 pts, but I could jump around and guass the crap out of vehicles. Small game like that it could be brutal.

5x hws lascannons
2x sws demo charges
50 conscripts.. ???

9 chimeras, over 100 bodies.. that is practically an entire army. drop a lord commissar and his chimera and replace with commander chenkov, and now you have an endless supply of conscripts.

If memory serves the NB / Deceiver *are* ICs, but weirdly have the "above all" rule which meas they can never join units. Which begs the question why they were made ICs to begin with - just means they are squig bait when Mephiston isnt

Full unit of jump pack death company, good mix of TH and melta pistols and the rest with LCs. Horrific sounding

There you go thehod. We are modifying things a bit to make it so that Space Wolves, Blood Angels and Black Templars don't dominate. But, it was really fun and a lot of laughs. Well worth it for a change of pace.

@Nosferatu1001
You are totally right, but we were letting them join units to give crons a fighting chance. It made things really fun.

Well the Necron codex was 3rd edition, in which Independent Characters couldn't be shot if within 6" of a friendly unit. There weren't really any characters that were independent.

I would like to see the equivalent of this for fantasy. Sounds like a great idea!

I've actually thought of doing it myself with my two armies once I get the second done... 18 treekin (although technically their max unit size is 12 :-/) versus 23 trolls with throgg . Both about 1200 points, both in horde formation getting full attacks with each model!

Would be fun to see these units clash, although with fantasy combats being done in order of initiative (rather than by who charges) with a lot of units it wouldn't even matter who charged... so they'd probably just move forward and smash into each other . Would still be fun, though! And of course it would matter for things like ogre kingdoms with their impact hits.

Awesome that your local store came up with and did something like this
