I played in another great RTT at Game Empire in San Diego, CA. If you have a chance to go I highly recommend it. Great group of guys, well organized and good prize support.

The tournament structure was 3 games, no comp, judged painting and sportsmanship. The sportsmanship was structured so that everyone got 8 points and you took away points if they did something shady or what have you.

I brought my tournament Wolves.

HQ:
Bjorn

Elites:

My opponent had the tools to take me out but he made some serious errors. He said he hadn't played in a while and I think he was a little rusty. He won the roll to go first despite Bjorn's reroll but gave me first turn and reserved about half his army, which was a huge mistake. The game played out the way you would expect. My army has crippling firepower and he was fighting me with half his army. As things came in they got waxed.

Bjorn got into his blob but couldn't kill them all before the game ended. I ended up holding every objective but his blob contested the last one. I got all of the bonus points and ended with a major victory. My opponent was a cool guy and his Praetorian army was really nice looking.

Game 2
Opponent 2: Cooper
Army: Chaos Space Marines
Spearhead deployment
Mission: each player puts three objectives in no man's land 6" away form another objective. You can only get your opponent's objectives and contest your own.

HQ:
Lash Prince

Heavy:

Cooper had a solid list and was a very good player. I had him outgunned but he played a smart game, using the large LOS blocking area terrain in the middle of the board to hide most of his forces. We both put our objectives along the board edge as close to our own deployment zones as possible.

I took first turn but his armor saves were crazy. I couldn't do much damage to him. His shooting, on the other hand, was very effective. The game boiled down to a Mexican standoff with neither of us willing to make a dash for the objectives and get either gunned down or assaulted by the waiting enemy forces. We sniped at each other and maneuvered for position. My superior fire power started to win the war of attrition despite his magic dice and he had to make a dash for the objectives. I gunned his boys down forcing him to play for the tie. I made a huge, huge mistake on the last turn that cost me the win. My last mobile scoring unit when the wrong way around a Rhino to take out his Chosen so that they could take an objective. I flubbed the consolidation roll and was out of range of the objective. Had I gone the other way, I would have been on the objective. Oh well. I ended up with all of the bonus points and a 0, 0 tie on objectives despite me doing far more damage to him than he did to me.

Great thinking man's game. It was all about position and Cooper was a skilled opponent. His Word Bearer's won best painted too, great looking army.

Game 3
Opponent: Shane
Army: Orks
Mission: Kill Points with standard 12" deployment. Each player designates one unit in his army to be worth 3 KP's. This unit can not be an IC.

HQ:
Warboss, bike, cybork, klaw, eavy armor, boss pole
Mek: KFF, burna, eavy armor, cybork

Elite:
Lootas x 6
Lootas x 6

Troops:

Shootas x30, klaw, nob, pole, eavy armor, b.shootas x 3
Shootas x30, klaw, nob, pole, eavy armor, b.shootas x 3

Fast:
Stormboyz x 20, nob, klaw, pole

Heavy:
Kannons x 3, ammo grots x 3, slaver
Kannons x 3, ammo grots x 3, slaver

Shane is one of the best 40K players I have met and his Orks have been the local terror. He walks through most everyone with barely even slowing down. That combined with a Kill Point missions meant I was looking at an uphill battle. I had 19 KP's, Shane had 12. Bjorn was my 3 KP unit, a mob of slugga boys was the Ork's/

I won first turn with Bjorn and deployed along the back board edge, putting as much real estate between myself and the hoard as possible. Then, Shane promptly stole the initiative. Bummer.

The game was tense and fun. The horde came down on me as we tried to take out each others' easy kill points. Bjorn saved the day by charging into a mob of boyz which had the Warboss attached. I used Jaws to snipe the nob out. Bjorn killed the warboss and wiped out the squad after a few rounds, then went on to tie up another mob and splat the Mek.

It was a really close game as the horde made it into combat. Thank the emperor for counter attack and for Long Fangs being tough old bastards. The game came down to a huge last turn assault by my entire army into the Orks. I wiped out two mobs, he wiped out three squads and the Rune Priest. It all came down to 4 morale checks. I needed a squad of Grey Hunters to pass an 8, my opponent had to pass 2 leadership 5 and 1 leadership 7. I failed mine, he passed all of his. That's pretty much the way the game went the entire time. The dice weren't my friend.

When the dust settled, I had 9 KP (I got the extra KP unit) the Orks had 8. You needed to win by 2 to get a minor, so we tied. I had 2 bonus points. I am pleased though with that considering how lucky my opponent was and how stacked against me the odds were.

I believe I ended up in 4th overall out of 20 or so and won best sportsman. Sweet! You can still be a nice guy with a nasty army.

My list is rock solid. I am very happy with all elements of it. The amount of firepower it packs in is withering and it has just enough assault power to keep my out of trouble. Bjorn giving me a 75% chance of going first is HUGE with my list, plus he's no slouch on the table top.

That's a sick amount of fire power. How did you knock out the IG demolishers? Side shots or did you melta it? Or just hit it straight on with lascannons?

Those are some nice looking armies. I think the IG actually were mordians, not preatorians though. Praetorians have pith helmets, Mordians have peaked hats.

Ah yes, it was Moridan, my mistake. It was a bitchin looking army though.

Yeah, my army will typically obliterate most opponents. I only bring this list out for tournaments as it is overpowering in casual games.

I destroyed the demolishers with side shots from the Typhoons (I have NO idea why more people don't use them, they are amazing) and straight on shots from the las cannons.

My biggest fear was the colossus as that is a Long Fang killer, but I managed to take it out turn 2 with an assault cannon razorback shot through a window of the building it was taking cover in. Once that was gone, I wasn't overly concerned.

All three armies I played were tough. The IG army could have been tightened up a little but the Chaos and Ork armies were about as mean as they come.

It was a very fun tournament.

Reece, I love your wolf list. Do you have pictures of your whole army online somewhere?

I was surprised at how easily you handled the orks (given their advantages). Do you find that that many templates really cut them down quickly?

I played a similar list a week ago, not nearly as optimized (just three grey hunters, three rune priests, and two long fangs) and it just takes apart mech IG. I only won because he didn't have the mobile firepower to really challenge my executioners and made a few mistakes. If played properly, I can't see how Mech IG beat shooty wolves.

Are you worried about things like Battlewagon orks, Deathwing, Necrons, or demons? All of those lists could give you troubles, as could jumpwing BA or drop pods.

I think that Long Fangs are up there as one of the best units in the game right now. A full six man, five ML squad is 10pts less than 5 codex Devs with 4 Missile launchers, and gain acute senses, counter attack, and split fire. They also stay LD9 if they lose their leader. Taking three is so cheap, both in points and opportunity cost, that you can build an army around them and they'll still be a small chunk of the army.

Seeing them in action, and really reading up on them, I think that SW might be the strongest codex now.

I think SW's, Orks, Nidz, SM, BA and IG are probably some of the better books (read multiple winnable lists).

Good job Reece, is that the list your brining to the Smackdown

@WD
Yeah buddy, in that video, mine is the white Space Marine army you see. A lot of it is just base coated right now because I haven't been painting my transport vehicles. In 4th ed I ran all infantry and pods, so I have thousands of points of painted infantry, but most of my trasnports are just white, along with all the extra long fang missile launchers.

The list is so solid. It has the tools to go toe to toe with anyone and I think it is superior to Logan Wing because of Bjorn, more firepower and the ability to target more units per shooting phase.

@Polonius
I agree 100%. Wolves are top dog right now, IMO. Mech IG hasn't even come close to beating the list.

Like you said though, Crons give me trouble. I barely, barely beat them at Ard Boyz.

I have not played a true Termie heavy army yet but I am not terribly worried about it. Daemons go down to massed missile fire pretty well.

The Orks were tough, and Shane is damn good. Had he not stolen the initiative I would have won handily I think. Also, had any one of the four leadership checks at end game gone my way instead of his, i would have won.

I played a Battlewagon Ork list generaled by a very good player and he pulled a tie on me out of his rear end. I was mauling his army, but he got dead lucky against Bjorn and took him out last turn, just swinging the game to a tie.

Long Fangs are amazing. They also have a bolt pistol and CCW! They assault like assault marines! They are undercosted for what they do.

@Hulk
Yeah, this is my list, so now you know what to meta game for!

I also play wolves (Rune Priest/Long Fang-spam w/Ragnar) and I'd have to say that a good mechguard list run by a good general is damn tough to beat. Your IG opponent has a decent list, but his generalship is not very good. Then again, you did say he was new. A very good IG list should have at least 1 Psyker Battle squad and arguably manticores.

Crons at highly points games (where they can take the deceiver and a couple of monoliths) are deceptively good if commandeered by a general who knows what he is doing.

Loganwing/Deathwing type armies may give you some problems as you have little AP 2/1 weaponry to deal with them. Otherwise, they're not very scary.

Orks are still good and competitive. However, they're slightly gimped against Space Wolves, who have the necessary means to dispose of them in terms of both shooting and assault.

LF's are very efficient. That's why they are one of the best heavy support choices for the space wolves (heck, one of the best in all of 40k). However, they need to swap their bolt pistols for a heavy weapon so they don't get to assault like assault marines (only the sergeant does).

Nice list, that looks like fun to play, very mobile.

@jy2
Ah yes, you are right on the fangs. They do swap out the pistol for the heavy.

Actually, termies aren't that scary as frag missiles are actually more efficient at killing them, point for point, than they are at killing marines.

The parasite is a PITA, I've played against him before. IN a big brood of Gargoyles like that, he is so hard to kill before he hits your lines.

My list as is is pretty much a bug swatter. I don't think I need to change anything.

Ymgarls though, will be causing my Long Fangs to sweat.
