How come when I crop images in photobucket and then post them on this site they sometimes appear un-cropped? Is it a Photobucket thing, a Dakka thing, or something I am doing?

No idea as I have had the same issue occassionally.
Best thing is to crop and resize before uploading to Photobucket.

Use the dakka galley instead, it is free and resizes to optimum size for forums (and other formats).

But anyways, i'm guessing when you crop in photobucket and possibly some other software, it has the original behind the scenes, just in case you have a fit because you did it wrong, and a frame within that of what you have cropped, dakka then picks up the original rather than the custom picture when you link the photo page to the appropriate thread, where as if you upload to the site, dakka always uses the custom image. But I agree with CBB, crop first, then photobucket should only have the custom picture to play with, especially when you have OT pics, as uploading to dakka is a no no! hth guys.

GIMP is a remarkably handy (and free!) Image Manipulator Tool. Not quite as good as Photoshop, but still quite powerful.
Also, did I mention free?

Second Gimp
Found it a little counter intuitive to use, but even I can do stuff on it, and it is excellent value for money!
For cropping and simple editing jobs I tend to use another freeware called Photofiltre
http://photofiltre.en.softonic.com/
just find it a tad quicker to use

Of course if all you're doing is cropping images, good old MS Paint serves just fine.

Well, it does blur the images a tad, and pixelate them, because otherwise you would have been able to see dakkadakka.com on my miniman avatar's coffee mug. I should have used gimp, really. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh well, you still can't see it. But it is a tiny bit better than before.

I dowloaded photofiltre. It seemed a little simpler than gimp, which is good because I stink at this kind of thing. Thanks guys.
