Quick sting and it was done, none of my ear piercings have throbbed afterwards, but that might have just been really good luck.
The labret was pretty bad when it came to pain, but it at least healed pretty quick, unless I kept biting it by accident :(

I have had a few....
lip, middle, for about a year, 8 years ago.
labret, for about 6 monthsm 4 years ago.
I have had my ears gauged from 3/4 to 1 inch for 4+ years, they are out now and shrinking up.
I had multiple cartilage piercings , some done myself, they are all gone now.
and I had my second favorite peircing, for about a year, a vertical industrial...hurt so bad....
that was torn out in my head on collision..
the only piercing I have that remains currently is my tragus on my right ear.
except mine is loop.

Only ever had a left ear lobe pierced.
Done the old fashioned way. Booze, ice and a needle.
Took it out a few years ago. Took all of three years to close up. Don't bother with them anymore. Something for the young folks and their face metals and screamo songs.

I'm talking 'sewing needle'.
Oh, and pliers to get it through the cartilage of my ear lobe.
Didn't really hurt (although i was very 'merry' at the time. Glayva and good company.) and I think the only thing that hurt less was my tattoo (which I fell asleep during).

Hnngh, the needle to get the labret done was massive, more like a hollow tube with a beveled razor sharp end. Not something you could ignore.
Falling asleep during a tattoo is pretty impressive though Chromedog, was it somewhere with few nerves near the surface?

Got my the helix of my left ear done in 1999.
Started as a ring and ball, then arrowhead, now diamond earing my wife bought me after I bought her diamond earings (hers are better)
I've had both earlobes done twice, 2nd time through the old holes. Had to let the first ones close over due to infection. 2nd time I just stopped wearing them about 7 or 8 years ago.

For those with the "disfiguring" peircings. Gages, rods, etc...
How have you found it affecting your job prospects?
I just have a hard time believing that you'd be able to pick up a job outside of the mall with things like that.

1 midway up my left ear, 2 in my right (it was a farily impressive industrial before i switched out to studs for when i'm at work)
use to have my eyebrow done
my piercings have yet to interfere with my current job (i work with kids), though it probably helps i keep less noticeable rings/studs in when i'm there

I wouldn't call it the "norm" here in the Seattles, but it is definitely a lot more accepted. Still, having inch gauges or even at half an inch, does inhibit prospects. The industrial was pretty low key, I never had an issue with it...it WAS quite some time ago, though.

I've had multiple piercings,at one point I had 13 in each ear,1 in my nose,1 in my lower lip and 1 in my eyebrow.
Over the years I became bored with looking like I'd fallen face first into a tackle box and removed most of them.
I now have 3 in my left ear and two in my right.

I find lip, nose, and eyebrow piercings (and tattoos for that matter) very alluring on females, but most guys these days tend to try way too hard with the piercing thing and end up looking ridiculous imho...
I had five at one point, but just fell out of love with the idea have not worn any for about 10 years.

It depends on what kind of work a person is looking for..... phone rooms, comic and game stores, tatoo and piercing places etc are pretty tolerant of that kind of thing. Phone rooms in particular employ alot of people.

Upper arm near shoulder. If we had ball joints for shoulders (like action figures) it would be on the outside of the 'ball'. Both of my tatts are in this location (Rose on one arm and Beethoven's 5th - first couple of bars - on the other.). OTOH, one of the laydeez I know has an entirely different response to tattooing to me. She orgasms. It's the touch of the needle and her strange brain wiring.

I have the eye of chaos, the stone one used on the back of the old epic 'space marine' book (or was it the adeptus titanicus book...?) across my back, took 8 hours and hurt like a mutha. Had it done on my 18th birthday as a right of passage thing.
Never been tempted to get piercings, I find the big holey ones highly unpleasant to look at.
I am very attracted to a single piercing on a woman, just below the bottom lip, it has to be central though or it sets off my autistic dislike of asymmetrical things...
I also find large hoop earrings on a woman attractive, it draws attention to her neck and shoulder.
