I've never played a wargame and I've painted miniatures only (very) occasionally... but I'd like to try the former and I'd like to raise my skills at the latter, from " bad" to just "bad." I've decided to try to put together a Space Wolves army as I've had a fondness for the 'Wolves ever since seeing this guy on the cover of a friend's copy of the first Citadel catalogue, and as – from reading that friend's copies of White Dwarf – I feel that the 'Wolves have a lot more opportunity for "character" than a lot of the other chapters.

Anyway, whilst I wait for my copies of Warhammer 40,000 and the Space Wolves codex to be delivered so I can try to put together a plan for my army, here's my first attempt at painting a Space Wolf:

If that is your first attempt I am very impressed! Have you done a SM chapter before? MY only criticism would be the eyes, they look like they could do with a spot of white to show the reflection.

My copies of Warhammer 40,000 and the Space Wolves codex have turned up so I thought I'd update this thread; thank you to everybody who has posted so far for their kind words and feedback; yeah, I've previously painted a handful of miniatures, but as I mentioned in my first post this is my first attempt at painting Space Wolves. And an army.

@Commander Cain: Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to improve the eyes.

@Jericho: Yeah, that miniature didn't have any highlights; I hadn't tried to paint highlights before and I didn't feel comfortable with trying to paint a new colour scheme using a new technique...

@That Other Guy: Thanks for the feedback, I'll try that.

I'll be trying to paint most of the 'Wolves to look (relatively) uncluttered, so that those 'Wolves which are more decorated (no pun intended...) will stand out; I'm also going to try to stray slightly from the usual 'Wolf colour scheme, introducing differences to the colour scheme for each pack type, beyond just the pack markings; but before I try to do any of that I'll need to practice painting scratched/chipped armour, and flesh, and gemstones, and ...

Anyway, whilst I'm off absorbing the rulebooks/codex, here's my third (the second… didn't turn out too well) attempt at painting a Space Wolf (and first at highlighting):

Mutated Chosen Chaos Marine

In a Toyota, plotting revenge.

First attempt at a sm? That's awesome stuff. All I can add is a wash of devlan mud to the gold followed by a dot of white to the eyes on the marines. Also, with the brown wolf tail placed where it is, the sw looks like he's dropping a steamer.

If this is what you call bad I'd love to see what you call good! Those are some really attractive minis. The basing scheme could use more depth though.
