I think they're dropped out of a thunderhawk at extremely low altitudes and they might have thrusters to slow the descent, but other than that I'm guessing they rely on the Land Raider's armour to protect itself.

Because they needed to make Land Raiders even better to make people buy Blood Angels, even though Deep Striking them is, in my opinion, a completly foolish tactic.

Presumably they work by the time honoured method of "Plenty more where those came from", although that does leave the question of where the Blood Angels came by such a glut of Land Raiders.
Conversely, how the heck to they get by with three Thunderhawk Transporters for the entire Chapter? Maybe it's the case that with only three of the damned things, they can't afford to bother with stuff like landing.
I see it as some sort of H.A.L.O. (High Altitude Low Opening) Grav Chute.
No good will come of this, No good at all

The real question is: Why the heck would you EVER want to DS a Raider?
Edit - I suppose if you were doing a drop pod list with locator beacons, you could eliminate the risk of dying on entry. Even then it'd still be awfully risky though.

/uses the first edition land raider for his deepstrikeing-land raider-of-doom.
Smaller footprint but way too tall and looks more like the British mark IIIs they used in the first world war. As to "why" you would deepstrike a Land Raider? becuase its fun, and also if you are using a BA one in planet strike it can apparently assault on the turn it comes in
(I myself have only done it once, only becuase my opponent wanted me to try out the BA codex and I thought "ah, what the heck, why not?")

Because Blood Angels are the army they were working on when they thought of adding it in.
That being said, I wouldn't be too surprised to see it remain a Blood Angels-only thing, as a part of the whole 'emphasising their Fast Attack tendancies' angle.

Aye, except the Night Lords then drive up to the Warhound to kill it rather than attempting to land on it's head. Oh, those Blood Angels, what will they try next?

I can see this being the case frankly.
Or it'll be something akin to the Blood Angels being the only ones with the Overcharged Engines for their transports; the Blood Angels just don't show no respect to their Machine Spirits.

Why do the Blood Angels deep-strike their Land Raiders?
Because, clearly, overcharging their engines, like all of their Razorbacks, Rhinos, and Predators, was technically impossible, and totally stupid.
Your Land Raiders have to be able to keep up with your fast tanks, so of course it makes more sense to drop them out of airplanes than just write rules that say that Land Raiders can also have overcharged engines.
The Blood Angels have deep-striking Land Raiders for the same reason that they have flying psychic dreadnoughts. Because it is AWESOME (and totally not stupid).
I have never read a Codex which was so simultaneously jaw-droppingly dumb and pants-wetttingly funny. It was the Warhammer equivalent of watching old hokey Chop Sockey movies.

Couldn't let orks have all the humor now could they?

They aren't overcharged they have a completely different engine.

In real life the military air drops tanks from c-130s.

As said in the codex they air drop LRs so they can keep pace with the faster rhino chassis vehicles. And why wouldn't librarians be interred in a dreadnought? Apparently every other chapter simply euthanize their injured librarians.

and doubt if you would parachute a tank into the enemy's lap
unless it's Christmas!
awaits the rebuttal that in 40k etc etc
The only way tha it would work was if there was some form of deceleration as mentioned above.
Do BA landraiders have retro rockets, anti grav or other sysem?
