So far, I've only been working with gold and boltgun metal, and I base gold with calthan brown and silvers with just black.

I like calthan a lot, but is there something better to use as a base for shining gold? Like, maybe not brown :3

I just paint boltgun metal right onto black. Should I do a basecoat for this? Maybe a dark grey or astro grey? I have no idea!

So, yeah, am I doin' it right?

I base shining gold with vomit brown, the yellow base looks pretty similar, and it looks like bling!

Silver I use a grey.

Ah, excellent! That sounds like a great way to do it, but I'm painting chaos marines, and this calthan is wonderful for a deep color. If I was working on anything else, I'd probably use snakebite.

Well I used it on my terminator chaplain, I think the gold serves a nice contrast to the black.

You could also do like me, although it might take some more time.

For gold, I'll paint the golden area with chainmail, then highlight it with whatever, then just give it 5-6 washes of GW Gryphonne Sepia and you'll have a nice looking gold.

If you want examples I got an assault marine sarg. in my gallery, although they are terribly photos, you at least see how it works

This works too and results in a more muted color. It's in the tutorial section somewhere.... too lazy to dig it up.

For a deeper gold colour I tend to base using a bronze or copper. Wash it with chestnut ink or gryphone sepia and then highlight with gold.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I base nearly all my metals over tin bitz over black, even silver.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Boltgun and silvers seem to do fine over just about any color, few things bleed through the pigment.

For Gold I usually use a base of Iyanden Darksun. Works pretty well over my darker primed minis.

I will generally use Tin Bitz over black, then Highlight up to Glorious Gold. I have also used Calthan as a base and it works just fine. If you are satisfied with the look you are getting...you are doing it right!
