Games Day UK News!
Hi There,
This Newsletter is the second of our Games Day UK previews, and here at Forge World we are all getting excited about the biggest Games Day of the year. We’ve got loads of exciting stuff to tell you about, so read on for more…
Thanks,
Ead Brown
Imperial Armour Volume 9: The Badab War Part I Available at Games Day UK!
Forge World can proudly announce that Imperial Armour Volume 9: The Badab War Part I should be available in limited numbers as a Games Day UK exclusive pre-release!
The year is 903.M41 and Lugft Huron, Chapter Master of the Astral Claws and self-styled Tyrant of Badab, declares the secession of his domains from the Imperium, taking four entire Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes with him into rebellion.
The scene is set for an epic clash of arms that will see armies crushed, fleets shattered and entire worlds reduced to lifeless cinders in one of the most dangerous internecine conflicts the Imperium has known in a thousand years.
History will call Lugft Huron a madman and a traitor, and condemn him as a pawn of Chaos or a Xenos puppet, but history is written by the victor, and in the grim darkness of the far future the truth is seldom so simple…
Inside this book, the first volume in Forge World’s two-part exploration of the infamous Badab War, you will find a detailed account of the shadowed origins, terrible secrets and savage birth of the Tyrant’s rebellion. You will also find information on the malevolent Warp-storm of the Maelstrom itself as well as the dangerous and forlorn worlds that border it.
Also detailed are full histories and dispositions of the nine Space Marine Chapters that played the most significant part in the Badab War’s early stages - the Astral Claws, Fire Hawks, Marines Errant, Red Scorpions, Raptors, Novamarines, Fire Angels, Howling Griffons and Lamenters are each illustrated with extensive colour profiles.
This volume also contains a complete army list, The Tyrant’s Legion, representing those forces that defended Huron’s conquered realms from the Imperium’s wrath, and a purpose-designed campaign system for you to re-fight your own Badab War. Also included are five unique campaign missions and a special Boarding Assault mini-expansion for Warhammer 40,000 that allows you to fight brutal ship-to-ship combats on the tabletop.
The full-colour, 208-page book contains 15 colour pictures, 120 full colour Space Marine infantry and vehicle profiles and 10 detailed colour star maps, as well as three new Apocalypse formations and twelve new special characters representing mighty warriors from the Space Marine Chapters featured in this book. Forge World’s book production team and Imperial Armour Writer Alan Bligh have done sterling work adding fantastic new depth to the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The book also contains a full colour, double sided poster containing a detailed Badab Sector map by Sam Lamont, and brand new Space Marine artwork by Paul Bonner.
To whet your appetite, we’ve put together a gallery of sample page spreads that you can find here, and our Games Day lorry-load of stock will contain as many copies of this eagerly-awaited new book as we can manage to plunder from our printers. The book will be priced at £45, and because we don’t yet know exactly how many copies we’ll have available, we recommend that you send us a reservation order as soon as possible! We hope to announce a general release date for shipping world wide very soon.
Forge World Studio Stand
Our entire Design Studio team of Miniatures Designers, Imperial Armour Writers and the Book Production team will be on hand at Games Day UK, displaying future projects, work-in-progress miniatures and original artwork, as well as surrounding themselves with a dizzying array of beautifully-painted Forge World models for you to admire.
Imperial Armour Volume 9 writer Alan Bligh will be supplied with a whole box of pens to autograph your brand new copies of the Badab War Part I, and you’ll be able to quiz him on his plans for the concluding part of this exciting expansion and maybe even get a few hints of his dark plans for future Imperial Armour books.
Graphic Artists Sam Lamont, Kenton Mills and Ian Strickland will be proudly showcasing the fantastic colour profiles and artwork that they have produced for the Badab project, as well as explaining the stages that a book goes through before printing. Kenton might even be persuaded to let slip a few titbits about the range of forthcoming Decal sheets and Etched Brass symbols that he’s been working on.
We’ll be bringing you more news about what other members of our Studio team will have to show you in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
Place Your Games Day UK Reservation Now!
Forge World are now taking reservation orders for Games Day UK. This is the best way to guarantee that we will have exactly what you want and we’ll have a separate Reservations Collections area on our sales stand, so you can pick up your order at any point during the day. So whether you desperately want to treat yourself to a mighty Reaver Titan to crush your enemies with, or pick up a set of White Scar Rhino Doors to customise your vehicles, place a Reservation and we will have it packed up ready and waiting for you. You can also reserve the fantastic 2010 Show Only figure, Mark Bedford’s Ork Runt Bot.
What’s more, as a special bonus, if you place a reservation of £50 or more you’ll receive an extremely rare Show Only figure free when you collect your order on the day, while stocks last. The models available will be drawn from our range of previous Show Only figures such as the Reaver Titan Princeps and Ork Skwadron Kommander (but sadly not the Runt Bot). The staff who fetch your reservation will grab one at random from the selection we have available.
To place a reservation, just send an e-mail titled ‘Games Day UK Reservation’ to ForgeworldReservations@games-workshop.co.uk including your name and a list of the items you’d like us to provide. You can also telephone us on 0115 916 8177 – in either case, we will provide you with an order number and total cost slightly before the event, and we’ll also inform you of anything that we can’t guarantee to have for you. If you wish to reserve a copy of Imperial Armour Volume 9: The Badab War Part I, please note that we will confirm availability during the week before Games Day.
Finally, remember that anything we don’t have, or run out of, can be ordered on the day with the added bonus of completely free shipping!
Games Day Tickets Still Available
If you’ve not yet bought your Games Day UK ticket, they’re selling fast! You can order yours by visiting www.games-workshop.com and if you need transport to the NEC, coaches will be leaving from Games Workshop stores nationwide so make sure you pop into your local store for more details.

hmmm there doesn't seem to be much in the way of special rules or characters in this book save for Huron and his lot as well as the extra scenarios...
also correct me if i am wrong but weren't the Mantis Legion a big part of this? with their tactical sniper squads or am i mis-remembering something?

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal. |

where are you getting that from? the preview pages only show the main special character (huron) but the text in the release say another 11 are in the book. i'm sure they'll each have something special. plus special missions, apoc formations (they usually have units for not normally formations), boarding rules, etc. this one is chocked full of cool stuff for marine players.

You know, I haven't been terribly enthusiastic about purchasing most Imperial Armor books. After getting the first two, most of the others had left me pretty 'meh'. But being an old-school player with fond memories of the original Badab War articles, I'm extremely excited about this - particularly the way they're talking about how things may not be as clear-cut as they've been made out to be in the past. I'm looking forward to seeing Huron's perspective in this - dear Lord! I'm interested in the fluff again!

They've said there's only going to be Huron and the Red Scorpion Librarian as characters who're going to be significant enough to get their own rules+models.
Likely, that's their way of saying the other characters will be like the Elysian Drop Troop characters from IA8(easily represented by standard models, and no real wacky special rules).
The Mantis Warriors played a part in the Badab War, and a pretty significant one...but they're still second-string Renegade Astartes who then turned tail and went back to the Imperium. Their "sniper squads" statement is you probably misremembering something from their Rogue Trader days, where one of their paint schemes was of a Mantis Warrior Sniper from a Tactical Squad and the "War of Tranquility". I'd say that's honestly the problem! You bought IA1+2(Guard and Navy; Marines and Imperium). They were both just "resource books", as opposed to detailing a campaign like they started doing with The Taros Campaign.

I'll think of something. My reasoning for them showing up on the table now is that 3 ships were sent from Prospero, and this is one of them. #2 could be the reason for showing in The Badab War Resonance in the Warp from their travel could also be a contributing factor for what happened to the Fire Hawks.....

If I remember correctly (an increasingly remote possibility I admit)- the other 3 chapters did not rebel immediately with the Claws. The Lamenters, Mantis Warriors and Executioners chose sides later.
The Claws rebelled in 901.m41. The other 3 chapters didn't join till 903.m41, angry at the Inquisition's reaction/attack on what they felt was a sovergn chapter's right. In 904.m41 the Mantis Warriors captured a ship of the Fire Hawks, dragging them into the conflict and it snowballed from there.
(it's likey they are splitting the Renegades between books, with the Claws and Lamenters in IA9 and the Mantis warriors and Executioners in IA10)

Well, looks like decent fluff and some pretty pictures, but with what looks like a paucity of new units and rules, I'd be mighty worried about sales if I were a FW beancounter.
Then again, anyone insane enough to have bought all the other FW books won't want to have a gap in their collection. But it's unlikely that this volume will become a "must have".
And thank the spahse emprah it's not Kinrade writing it. Seems like a nice guy, and quite enthusiastic... but his terrible rules, copy-pasta style and nonexistent self-editing should keep him out of writing anything for publication.

The Imperium always loses in these books. That said, sometimes the loss is justified (like in IA4), and sometimes the loss is infuriatingly stupid if not down-right insulting to one's intelligence (like IA3).

Yeah, Forgeworld is really taking a gamble on a book that is Space Marine vs. Space Marine. Full of color art and designs for 9 Chapters that aren't the big 4/5. That relate back to the nostalgia some older gamers feel about the two page Badab War spread from ~1990. With rules for boarding actions. Which is why they made two books. And tons of transfer sheets and etches.
Sarcasm aside, this thing will probably sell better than IA3 - IA8. Players are sick of the big 4/5, but many still love the Marines. Sales aren't a concern, I'd wager.

I'm sure I've asked this before, but as someone who still hasn't got Vraks 3 yet, what was wrong with IA8?a IA8 is not the last of the Vraks books ( IA7 is, which does end in a more satisfying way). No, I don't like it because of the change of writing style. I prefer it as a report, not as a poorly written novel. Here's hoping that the team of IA9 not goes down that same road and spins a better yarn.
Also Kan, no.

erm... they are taking a gamble by publishing a book featuring space marines fighting space marines, based on a fantastically unexplored bit of pretty cool background? are you sure? because, you know... apparently gw sells quite a few space marines.

No, I don't like it because of the change of writing style. I prefer it as a report, not as a poorly written novel. Here's hoping that the team of IA9 not goes down that same road and spins a better yarn.
Badab is written by Alan Bligh, who has also done lots of freelance stuff for fantasy flight... you can tell his bits in the dark heresy books, and he's responsible for the Haarlocks' Legacy campaign which is freakin ace.
