Sternguard are pretty good stand-ins for Deathwatch, and I'm sure you can ask about bringing them in however.
What should that have to do with that. Old codices also don't get invalidated because of new ones. Why should i.e. the Deathwatch be invalid because there is a new
IG codex?
And, for example the Zealots came after the most recent Witchhunter codex. Why should they be invalid?
Uh, yeah actually an older codex does become invalid when a new version of that specific codex is released. That's why they release new versions...
As for "why should the Deathwatch be invalidated because there is a new
IG codex"? It's simple. The rules were designed to work with a different version, weren't in common usage, and the rules can very readily be interpreted as "too
OP" by the
WAAC spankers.
It's the Forge World Syndrome, in short.
With a good enough gaming group who's willing to help you balance things out though, the possibilities are endless.
I use Deathwatch Marines in my Guard force on a regular basis locally for our
Apoc games.
The local group just uses the Sternguard Veteran Squad, up all the models to count as Sergeants, so they can get the Sergeant's options. Then we make it so special issue ammunition applies not only to Boltguns but Storm Bolters, Combi-meltas, flamers, plasmas, and Heavy Bolters.
Add in an option for a "Deathwatch Veteran Sergeant", who gets the options/special rules from Telion for a Stalker pattern Boltgun, Eye of Vengeance, Voice of Experience, etc.
It makes for a pretty characterful Deathwatch Squad, and makes them a damned sight more fluffworthy of the Deathwatch.

And there's not a damned thing that WRONGBADFUN up there can do about it.
How is that any different from what I said...? I'm fairly certain that "I'm sure you can ask about bringing them in however" implies that asking your gaming group is a better idea than a collection of gamers from the Internet.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, as an aside...
If anyone wants a copy of the rules that my local group and I use for a Deathwatch Kill-Team,
PM me. They're pretty damned long and still need more playtesting before I put them up in Proposed Rules.
