Posting this because I nearly filled out an online form incorrectly... surely it's far more logical to go up in the increments of time? Day being the shortest, then month, then year...

Is there any sensible reason why month goes first? o.O

I heard the military does it differently?

How on earth did it even evolve?

Canadian Military does it DD/MM/YY, and that's how I've done it ever since. Everything I record at work is dated in the format of (Using today's date as an example) "03/09/10" or "3 SEPT, 2010".

I'm betting the common use of the "MM/DD/YY" format probably came about the same way as Lieutenant being pronounced "Lefttenant" by British and Commonwealth military forces - just an error. Someone likely put the month before the day by accident, and it just stuck.

Because they drive on the wrong side of the road?

Don't see it as a problem til they say things like 9/11 which of course is the 9th of November to any sane person

The real question is why do Aussies put the fall of wickets BEFORE the run score? What's up with that!?!?

Its the way its written out properly. September 4th,2010 or 9/4/10. Some places here do use different formats. Why I dont know. I never saw it different until computers grew.

There is no set way to do it. I've seen it done Year Month Day, Day Month Year, Month Day Year, however you want to say it.

It all just depends on whoever is asking for the information. Whoever creates the document will put down whatever format they like the most. There is no national standard. You just gotta pay attention to what your filling in.

I've heard that too some Americans (not all) think that we don't speak proper English unless we speak like a blue blood.

It's America, man. We spend like, 80% of our time thinking of new and exciting way to tell the rest of the world to feth off. MM/DD/YYYY is just another example.

I always say 1st April, but I'm English.

I'll write dates either 3rd Sep or Sep 3rd, it doesn't bother me or anyone else I've met.

I always write numerical dates 3/09/2010, unless filling in an American or Japanese form.

It's more logical to place the units in size order, day/month/year, though it would be twice as logical to place them in year/month/day.

My brother deliberately got married on 2nd Feb in order to not have to bother to avoid confusion when filling in American forms.

Here's an interesting one. By convention, electricians wire up switches in the UK so that down is on and up is off. In the US it is the other way round. How do you think Japanese electricians do it?

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

It's just a cultural thing. Like how most countries would probably write 0.99 as 0,99.

I personaly put the day first because you should just know what month it is.

Ill argue with that one. There is more Americans, then Brits, therefore we have more drivers that drive CORRECTLY! So I say YOU guys are driving wrong

Lol you forget we are the only country that does this. Everyone else drives on the left side. All 5.7 billion.

Total: 76 countries, territories and dependencies

Today road traffic in the following seven European jurisdictions drives on the left: the United Kingdom, Ireland, Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, Malta and Cyprus . None shares a land border with a country that drives on the right and all were once part of the British Empire. Some Commonwealth countries and other former British colonies, such as Australia, Barbados, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, South Africa and Trinidad & Tobago drive on the left, but others such as Canada, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and the United States drive on the right. Other countries that drive on the left in Asia are Thailand, Indonesia, Bhutan, Nepal, East Timor and Japan. In South America, only Guyana and Suriname drive on the left. Most of the Pacific countries drive on the left, in line with Australia and New Zealand, with Samoa joining most recently, on 7 September 2009, the first country for three decades to change the side on which it drives.

More drive on the right than left. :(

Interestingly there is a small amount of evidence that driving on the right leads to more accidents. It is possibly to do with the hemisphere dominance of the brain. Of course it is a minor effect completely outweighed by factors like driver instruction and the width of roads and so on.

In the future we will all be driven by robot chauffeurs.
