For my DC, I've decided to make them white and the problem I'm currently working on is how to build up from the black prime coat up to white. Kinda because I hate myself.

I've read that building it up from greys would work pretty well.

How do fellow dakka users make white?

Prime white to start.

base color with Astronomicon gray. covers over black quite well and is light enough to not need other shades to get a good white. Keep in mind that white itself will need multiple layers as any darker shade at all will show up after one or 2 coats.

priming white for sake of an easy white shade is only worth while if the majority of the model will be white or some other light color like yellow.

Take High Elves for instance, archers should be primed white if you are giving them white cloth, whereas spearmen should be primed black due to the little amount of cloth compared to armor.

For me, the Adeptus Battlegrey followed by a couple of thinned Skull White layers seems to work best - oh, and using Space Wolves Grey, thinned to a wash, works well for shading.

Personally I use a Dhenab Stone base followed by a light coat of Bleached Bone.

I then do several layers of very thin skull white paint.

2x coats of a thinned down fortress grey, thinned down skull white.

It was in the painting guide for painting black templars shoulder pads after priming the models black. I used it when I painted my templars and it works very well.

Spray the white primer less then a inch onto a piece of cardboard till you have a nice little puddle and use that to paint the primer on.

This. Though really it depends on whether you want a warm white, a cold white or a neutral white. The shadows for the white will change depending on which you want, i.e. Using Space Wolves Grey, then white will make a very cold scheme, Fortress Grey will be more neutral and using Bleached Bone as an interim will make it a warmer white.

If I want a pure white, I use Vallejo Foundation White. Usually only takes three coats.

For a dirty white, I start with Reaper Master Series Bone Shadow, then layers of Aged Bone, Polished Bone and finally Pure White.

For a dark, shaded white I use a base of RMS Shadowed Stone, then layers of Stone Grey, Weathered Stone, Leather White and finally Pure White. That looks like these guys shirts:
