I've been dithering about PP's product lines for a long while now. With Warmachine, none of the factions really grab me. (Although I have been liking those pirate guys . . .) With Hordes, I like Legion, Circle, and Skorne generally but none of them enough to really take the plunge.

. . . until recently. In keeping with my fondness for defunct models, I picked up the metal Skorne starter set a week back. At the very least, I thought, I could see if I liked their models.

The answer, at least as far as the Skorne Cyclops Savage is concerned, is ABSOLUTELY NOT.

(1) The thing was a terror to assemble.

(2) The pose is ludicrous. He's incredibly rigid and looks as though he might topple forward at any minute

(3) Detail shock.

Here he is, not altogether finished (missing his flag and back loin cloth) but pretty much as done as I can/am willing to get him.

Let me also add some disclaimer language:

- I am not hating on PP. Other of their models may be a real treat.

- I know I'm not that great of a painter. Or photographer.

I really should have had this dude done by now but I have just been putting it off. I'm totally terrified to start on the Titan Gladiator. The only thing that will motivate me is getting to play what is supposed to be one of the best miniature games ever written.

You picked up the correct faction for model frustration, the skorne starter is awful to put together. I had mine unassembled on the shelf for 3 until I took the plunge. The gladiator is a pain to put together but it is so sweet model now he is built, need just to get some paint on him. The rest of the figs are not so bad, the pretorian swordsmen for example go together like a charm and are fun to paint.

Your take on the savage looks good, red and gold work together. Just get the base finished and move on to other models. Have you planned on painting other figs than the battlebox?

That's actually reassuring, in a strange way.

Even better to hear! I haven't really decided how far I will go with Skorne. These guys will be my "let's see what this is about" force. I'd rather be in Warmachine for some things (read: JACKS!) so I'm always trying to pick one of those factions.

Thanks but that's PP's scheme. Not being an artist myself, I tend to go with established studio themes.

They're on the way but I'm not sure how long it will be between finishing the Old Clan Rats and beginning the new ones (which I haven't even bought). My chances of actually playing WHFB in Richmond, VA, are pretty low so that's one factor.

Yes I know, I have a quite a few skorne figs, some even painted. I fell in love with them when Hordes was published but got along to painting them only last year. The studio schemes from PP are quite good. I have made small adjustments to my cygnar and skorne, but the relation to the studio schemes is visible, especially on my cygnar.

In my pics, you can see that I went with more gold than PP. They like all the cording black but it looks kind of wasteful in my opinion--creating energy-draining spots in key areas rather than "popping." I'm not really a fan of metallics (and am not skilled enough for NMM--and wouldn't bother on this model even if I was) but I think it works better than Badab-washed Codex Grey. Maybe I will test this theory when Cyclops 2's turn comes around. TBH, what really sold me on Skorne was the beaten-bronze texture most readily visible on that right pauldron.

I'm sucker for the whole oriental vibe, but what sold skorne to me was the Titans. The whole idea of battle elephants is so great and the execution is also great.
