because of the large skin area a chaos marauder, would it be best to prime it white and then just paint the metal areas black?

I would avoid priming anything white. It makes painting any colour, except white or bright yellow very hard to do.
Prime it black, then use Tallarn Flesh as a flesh basecoat and any flesh colour will go over that easily.
This leave all the metal bitz and cloth bitz black still so you can more easily paint them/shade them.

While I don't agree that you should avoid priming white, with the advent of Tallarn flesh it is very easy to get decent flesh tones with black primer.
The only time I say you HAVE to prime white is with something like High Elf archers where the majority of the model will have large surface areas of white.

How so? I've primed everything white for years.

Priming white is pretty much a given for me since I discovered ink washes and basecoats
Priming grey is also an option *sharp intake of breath*

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes... |

Both have their merits. I personally only prime black on models where 70%+ of it will be metal such as my spearmen. Archers like I said I prime white. Marauders I would personally prime white as it allows fewer coats of brown for pants and hair. Flesh generally comes out better over white IMO.
