My friends and I play on a 6 by 4 for most games at smaller points it is kinda big. I always thought 6by 4 was what the book said and other sizes where just what worked based on what people liked at what point level.

I play :

6' by 4' seem to be pretty standard for most fights.

I use a 4x8 table as my friends painted boxes on each long end of the table to put your units on individually for each unit, its nice to have space to put your deep striking units or reserves until you need them. so the playing table is 4x6 with extra 1 ft space on each end.

Standard table size for standard rules is 4' by 6', or 48" by 72".

Page 88 in the small rulebook. First sentence.

Now that's not to say you can't use a different table size if you want to, just that GW's rules are designed to work on a 4x6 table.

I personally play smaller battles on a 3.5' by 3.5' cityscape, which can be fun, but only really works under 1000 points. Great for Combat Patrol and Kill Teams.

my kitchen table can easily handly small games, being around 4 foot by 4 foot. however, for anything over say, 1500 points, you need a 6x4 table

Rulebook says 6'x4' is standard. IIRC, the "standard" game is also 2,000pts, but I've seen everything from 1500-2500pts. played on the standard board with no issue. There's a line shortly after that first sentence that SaintHazard pointed to that says you can scale up or down to suit your point limit (or to utilize your only available play space), as long as you can still define the two parallel pairs of long and short edges.

If you're likely to play larger battles, a 4'x8' table would be better, space providing, as you can always mark a line to limit the play area down to a more point-appropriate size. The same is true of a 6'x4' table, but to a lesser extent - you can still scale down, but you can't scale up for the bigger non-Apocalypse games.

As for what size is best suited to each point limit, that's rather flexible. A 1,000pt game can reasonably be played on a 6'x4' board, but expect a lot more movement if you want to get to the fight. You could have a more intense firefight with those same models on a 4'x4' board. A 2,000pt. game works perfectly on a 6'x4' board, but good luck cramming all those models into a 4' square and playing the same way.

If I had to guess, I'd go in 1,000pt. increments. 1K for a 4'x4' table, 2K for a 4'x6' table, and 3K for a 4'x8' table. Going 500pts in either direction will give you a perfectly workable fight with a slightly different feel (1500pt. 4'x4' is a tight firefight, 1500pt. 6'x4' will be a bit more sparse and movement-focused).

6x4 for 1500 to 2500 4x8 for 3000+ and 4x4 for <1500, and 12x6 for 10000 up.

My group likes terrain and space, so we tend to play a slightly larger board. Everything in the world seems to be sold in an 8x4 sheet so that's just what we built naturally and it's worked great. Took us over a year to realize 6x4 is technically the standard size.

An 8x8 board is fun, but not quite fair to an assault army (even with 2 ft deployment). 8x6 would probably be the sweetspot for a 4k pt+ game. Haven't built a 12x4/6 configuration yet. Can't think of a room it would fit well in

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Standard games of 2k points, i use a 4' X 6'

but for our big games, 4k - 6k points per side I use a 6' by 8'

with a TON (tonne?) of terrain.
