While working on a test model for my latest marine project, I found that the red circle and parchment look which is the standard didn't look all that great against the white sections of the model it was on. It got me thinking about possibly alternatives for the 'ribbon' portion.

After browsing through a number of galleries I have not seen a lot of variation on this. Have any of you guys worked on alternate schemes, and if so which ones seemed to work best?

I am leaning now to a dark red for the ribbon portion to stand out against the green and white of the models.

Any purity seals on my Space Wolves that don't get shaved off get the black treatment for the seal and then bleached bone washed with flesh wash for the ribbons. It looks good and the darker ribbons, thanks to the wash, stand out against most anything behind it.

Ive done grey before. On my current Blood angels army I paint them with various shades using snot green. That seems typical for red armor though (green purity seals). I would experiment with it. For my next army I want to paint them in a NMM gold or silver color.

I once had a Space Marine Scout which had two purity seals next to each other, painted one red and the other green. It looked very good, mainly because green and red make each other come out stronger.

Thanks for the input guys. I am leaning towards a gold or bronze for the wax portion, and I even found my old GW metallic green paint was still good after all of these years so it might get used on the characters.

I'll give a test to the bleached bone and flesh wash ribbons. to see how it stands out against the green or white sections of my marines. I am not planning on trying to put any sorts of script markings at this time, but we will see how it turns out.

On a few of my Marines I used red for the wax and green for the ribbon, as pictured below on the legs of the two white marines.

Whatever contrasts and is in keeping with the colour scheme.

My Talonborn (Space Wolves successor) with blue armour got red details and grey weapons. The purity seals were red, and the parchment grey.

My unnamed blood angels successor chapter with brown armour and red details got red purity seals and bone parchement.

(Guy on right has some)

My old Imperial Fists had yellow armour with purple seals and bone parchment.
My old blood angels had purple seals with grey parchment.

etc etc

Just experiment, and remember you can paint them any colour you want, so long as it looks good.

Personally, for my army I have the the purity seals on my Marines completely black. Both the seal and the ribbons due to the color scheme of my troops. Plus the back story for them is that they like the darkness so anything that would give them away is a no-no.

Thanks for the compliment! Not personally, but there's a few small pics of my armies on my gaming club's website. At the risk of clogging up this thread with off topic stuff, I'll just post links. From newest to oldest:

Bounding Black Templar Assault Marine

Crusading deep in the Eastern Fringe.

For purity seals (the ones with the wax), just use whichever color contrasts from the armor it's placed on. Now, I have Black Templars, so the crusader seals that they have are all painted not to look like parchment, but strips of red ribbon going along the lines of Scab Red, Red Gore, Blood Red, Devlan Mud wash. You can add in a tad of orange if you want to, as well.

No pity!
No remorse!
No fear!
