Is it just me? Or does everyone else think that 40k models are out of scale?.. not woefully out of scale but enough that you notice. Take SM forinstence, an IG model standing next to a SM model looks rediculous, the imperial guard comes to the top of the SM's shoulderpad, whereas in reality they should be around chest hight or even smaller. IMHO a space marine model should be as tall as the oblitorator models, or a terminator at the least. The guys a GW tryed to convince me otherwise by saying "ooohh well... they are standing in different positions" but im not convinced.

Models are not all to the same scale. Vehicles are different to SM are different to IG are different to nids.

I think making vehicles to scale would end up with them being much bigger, thus meaning more complex, more expensive, and harder to carry, especially if they made space marines bigger, meaning Rhinos and Land Raiders would have to be considerably larger as well.

i dont understand why my local GW were skirting round that point though, it would have been a lot simpler for them to say that. It seems the only people that work at my local GW that know a substantial amount about 40k are the manager and the assitant manager. Everyone else seems a bit stupid. Sure they know how to play the game but they are totally naieve when i comes to the background, its strange going in there and knowing more about the backstory than the people that work there. Because it's too late to redesign everything. To bring things into scale they'd need to make a lot of things smaller than the Marines and doing that is expensive.

Yeah, i get that they will probably never re-do the models because of how expencive that would be, but what i dont understand is why they didnt make them to the right scale in the first place.

A lack of quality control.
GW's not alone here. Take a look at BattleTech miniatures. Their scales vary wildly back and forth, with a lot of the newer things being far bigger than they should be and so big that they become impractical.
Of course, Iron Wind Metals is a 3-person company running with free lance sculptors. Citadel Miniatures should know better.

Have you seen the difference between the Imperial Armour/Dawn of War II gaunt size and the GW gaunt size? They are at stomach hight in the books, and would stand 8 feet tall if standing straight up.
I personally like the big gaunts alot better

There is a reason the game is in what is called 28mm "heroic" scale.
The models themselves do not follow "divine proportions" in fact many are very far off(marines are actually the closest).
judging by a guardsman's Head he should be almost as tall as a Space marine etc, etc.
Now while this misrepresents form; it is great for Painting and modeling as you want the face, hand, weapons, etc to stand out. (an autocannon apparently fires a shell almost as big as your head, and is 12' long from barrel to breach).
Even weapons themselves are not in scale with each other(Dread assault cannon is 2.5-3X the size, and caliber, as a terminator Assault cannon, yet the stats are identical)

GW has a terriable reputation for making its figs out of scale since day one. Most figs are based at 28mm or 1/28th scale, its ok but I noticed one thing that there is no way to fit a full Space Marine unit of 10 marines and all there gear into a Rhino. So I upscaled all my vehicles to 1/35th scale and it looks alot better size wise.

iirc from KK's article on scales, 28mm approximates to 1/56 scale.

That makes sence, I didnt think of that. It would fething annoying to have to paint a tiny little IG face.
