Here is the situation. I've recently moved and almost needed my own truck for all of my 40k goodness. So I am currently thinking about 'thinning the herd', so to speak. I'm thinking of keeping 2 or 3 of my 17 armies and liquidating the rest, including gaming table and terrain. All of my personal stuff is painted to a very high quality (I almost always get a best painted army no matter which I play), so should I just start slapping them up on eBay? Or should I pack them down and store them, long term, to give to my kids when they get a bit older? I'm not set on anything at moment - just looking for suggestions. Thanks!

How much will you regret letting them go, and how likely are you to re-purchase armies down the road?

I have seen friends sell stuff, and a year down the road wish they hadn't, and were daunted buy re-purchasing and rebuilding, so didn't.

Personally, I would keep as much as I am comfortable having, knowing I may get a bug and want to play something.
The game changes often enough that keeping armies in storage is a viable option.

I've sold a few armies on ebay. if they're unpainted or just averagely painted you won't get a good price for them. People on ebay usually just buy whole armies if they're cheap. You'll make a little more if you sell things by unit, but then that's a lot of upkeep and ebay fees on the units that don't sell and you have to relist.

That is actually a viable option, considering I have been playing since 1987 and my Catachan IG, Sob, GK, & Nurgle Deamon armies are entirely metal (except for vehicles), as well as a ton of my older stuff. Hmmm... I'm liking that idea! I wonder what it would cost?!?

I've gotten rid of a number of figs and armies in the last 2 years (and before that, even more). It was...cleansing. Keep what you're attached to and clear out the rest...

Sounds like you have some older stuff that folks here might be interested in.

Figure out what you want to keep then post the rest in the trading forum.

Personally I wouldn't get rid of any of them. It turns out the army I wanted to get rid of is the one my nephew likes so I am teaching him how to play with that army. He doesn't like space marine!

If you have 17 armies, that may be a bit excessive, tho I'm not really one to talk here in terms of total amount of stuff. I prefer to have a larger mix-and-match force, so maybe keep the 6 largest / most comprehensive armies and unload the rest? or just unload your least-loved armies?.

If you really need the cash, and don't ever see yourself rebuilding them, go ahead and sell them. Generally, you never get what you put in, and rebuilding always takes longer and costs more.

If you like the armies, then I'd hold onto them. I've held a bunch of stuff, because I could.

I would go ahead and sell the least played armies, however many that you are comfortable with what's left. If you do decide to sell some do put a post in the Swap Shop first or with the Ebay link as some folks here are looking for older models. You wouldn't happen to have squats by chance? For curiosities sake.

LOL! I do indeed have some of 40K's least loved little guys, and if I decide they need to go, Dakka's swap shop would be the first place I'd post !

Sounds like you're sitting on a mountain of money to me. X) Assuming everything is painted to as good a standard as you say. I would keep 3-4 of my favorite armies and then sell the rest.

If your luck is anything like mine, the minute you get rid of any army, they will receive either a new awsome codex update or the peice you've always wanted.

My question would be: Do you need the money? If so sell what you need to get the money you need. If not pack up the armies you like least and give it a month. If after a month you don't miss them or think you would be happy selling them then go ahead and do it.

But if you really don't need money you just may want to hang on to them because it will be really hard and expensive to get them again.

However 17 armies is a lot and if you have duplication you may want to just get rid of them.

I would guess that space is a much bigger issue than money. I have 6 armies and lots of random stuff, and space is becoming a real issue, can't even imagine finding space for 17 armies

I would try to unload the least liked armies, if they are very well painted, and you have many "valuable" OOP figurers, you may even make a pretty decent sum of money.

I wouldn't sell them unless you really need the money. But even if you do really need the money, you can sell your plasma or ebay something other than models lol. If space is the problem, have you considered a storage unit? I'm renting a unit that's 5'x5' in California and it's $49/month. I'm not sure if that's good or not, but it does what I need it to (and it's not for models by the way lol).

only sell them if you're in desperate need of cash and are willing to sell at fire sale (aka ebay) prices.

If you're the kind of person who owns one of every army, you're the kind of person who is going to miss whichever ones you get rid of.

Some of the best advice I've ever heard is "Don't sell an army" - at some point you'll want to play them again, or dig them out to admire them. The terrain can go since that probably takes up a bit more space, but armies are a very personal thing.

I'd box them up for your kids.
I passed on my unwanted armies to my son and Nephew, their response was amazing, and their enthusiasm for the game took my beather away, so much so that i find myself playing more against both son and nephew than any other apponant..
