As an ork player my friends tau always seem to kill me. This happens quite a lot. He has several techniques that i don't like.
Pathfinders:Take away cover, the only thing, my orks have to live.
Railguns: Punch straight through open topped transports, or lets my unit of boyz take a pie plate. Has two broadsides with 4 shield drones. I have to punch through 4 2+ saves to start damaging his broadsides, who both have two wounds a piece.
Flamers: He has 2 crisis suits who have TL flamers. Deep Strike behind my boyz and serves them well done.
Kroot: Tie up my boyz in an assault, which takes a turn to get out of.
Firewarriors: shooty things of death that shoot me, and I am out of range with my boys.
My Main problem is getting close enough to assault, and then do damage. If I footslog he burns and railguns them. If I take a transport he railguns the transport then burns ans rail guns them. Deffkoptas with TL rokkits can take out a Crisis suit in one shot if their lucky (thank you ID). But by the time he deepstrikes and burns, there is nothing I can do. KFF's don't help because he can reduce the cover save with his markerlights, and flamers could care less about cover. I have kommandos and Snikrot to ambush, but they can only kill one unit until they themselves die. Dakka, please help!.

A few things...
He has only broadsides for railguns, no hammerheads? Because Broadside-Railguns can't fire pie plates. Only the hammerhead can do that. And Broadsides don't have two shots each, they have ONE shot that is twin-linked.
It seems to me like they guy may be a little sketchy on the rules? Because, if he plays Broadsides this way, they are much stronger than they're supposed to be.

He has 1 hammerhead and 2 broadsides. Also, mea culpa, I meant wounds instead of attacks. They have two WOUNDS apiece. Automatically Appended Next Post: I play mostly quick 1000-1200 point games. Gazzy is to much of a point sink, or is he?

Ah, okay, then everything seems legal.
Have you tried out your Deffkoptas with alpha-strikes on pathfinders and the 'head instead of going for the suits? That could eliminate markerlight problems and get that big railgun out of the game turn 1.

By alpha-strike I assume you mean when I turbo boost for scout move, then rokkit them and assault them on my turn 1, when I go before my opponent. This would give my opponents something shoot at, I only have one squad of 3 koptas, but it still makes sense. They would shoot at my koptas, after I (hopefully) finished off a unit, and they would still benefit from the 3+ turbo-boost save. I will have to try that out. Any suggestions for the flamers?

I would try and use the koptas separately - not one big unit of three, but rather three units of only one kopta, if your FA slots allow that. This way, they can tackle multiple targets on the alpha-strike if they need to. Yes, they are going to die, but they are a very useful suicide unit. A kopta with T4(5) and 2 wounds can bog down a pathfinder squad for ages, while one of his friends goes all crazy with the buzzsaw on the stationary hammerhead, so all his attacks auto-hit...I'd give this a try.

I've fought Tau a few times with my new Ork Army (mainly ASoBR troops) and have destroyed them each time. The Mek's KFF, even if he does reduce the cover save, is key to surviving that first turn of shooting. I swear by Deffkoptas against Tau. 3 separate units of 1 Kopta a piece seems to be the way to go.
I use to run 2 Deffkoptas in a unit, but given the way they attract firepower, it is not worth the points to double up. 3 squads, TL rokkits + Buzzsaws, pray for the first turn to pull an Alphastrike on the Hammerheads. If not, then outflanking can cause some damage, albeit later then you would like.
Suck up the first turn of shooting, keep your Boyz 2" apart to reduce pie plate losses, and get into assault ASAP. You can not outshoot Tau, but you can easily rip their heads off. Be strong in that belief!

Spam truuks, battlewagons, and koptas.
If he has 6 truuks, 3 wagons, 9 koptas to deal with then he won't be able to kill it before your on top of him.
To get cheap truuks, go to toys are us or some garage sales and buy kids trucks then make em orky.

i like trukk spam. my current list i use, (wich kicks tau arse) is 5 trukks, loaded with 4 squads of boys, a warboss with nobs, and then a second warboss on bikes with nob bikers. its upwards of 1850 to run, but very fast moving and only gives him one turn of shooting at you.

Thanks for all the help Dakka! Next game I'll play 3 separate units of koptas. Trukk spam might be had to fit into 1000 points. But if I go second, then if he manages to pop some transports, what do I do about the flamers?

If your truck spamming you should be in his lines by the time those flamers arrive. If they come down they can toast a unit (if they don't mishap that is) but theres not much you can do besides charge him with another unit.

then you run a warboss with PK as HQ.
