I normally don't play at my LGS because the players smell bad, they don't have nicely painted armies, and they are pretty mush flavor of month BOLS smacktards. That said the store owner a nice guy asked me to come down and play in a short tournament tonight knowing I have nicely painted armies and people like to look at them and then buy models because they can envision something other than gray blobs.
It was a two round tournament with some store credit on the line. Anyhow I was board so I decided to play my DA as codex marines. My first opponent was cool, poor bastard was running a 1500 point BA army which consisted of 3 jump assault squads, 3 priests, and a librarian. I had a land raider redeemer a 5 man term assault squad, and chaplin, sternguard dp, dread dp, tac dp, and walk on tac. It was not a good match up for my opponent, he didn't have nearly the right AV, but he was cool. Easy win for me.
My next opponent was a vulcan army, definitely a tough matchup. I noticed in his first game he called the judge, a kid named Andy that works at the store over alot, you know one of those guys. Anyhow we started playing I chose my dp stern and dread to appear in his back field and start tear stuff up, and they did. After my DS's, I drove my LR forward full speed towards the dread and stern landing site as it was the command and control mission and I wanted the fight to be at his objective not mine. I said I pop smoke as I didn't have points for the MM upgrade and there was not much worth shooting as with the assault cannon that wouldn't get cover. He called for the judge, I was thinking to myself this should be interesting. He complained that my LR was not WYSIWYG because I choose not to put the ugly smoke, and light bits on it. I told him that only upgraded wargear needs to be modeled, standard wargear such as smoke that comes on every LR does not need to be modeled. Andy agreed with me, and sighted CSM and Grey hunters as being obvious not WYSIWYG standard wargear type models. The little punk persisted, and I didn't really care so I said fine lets just play it your way, no smoke on the LR. I finished out the turn and was once again reminded why I don't play with the tools at the LGS.
On his turn he decided my sternguard that combat squaded out to split their combimelta fire between his vindicator and ironclad came under fire as they were still quite a threat with AP3 bolter ammo. He killed one 5 man squad to a single guy, and moved up a tactical squad to charge the remaining five man, I am assuming after a flamer shot and bolt pistol fire. He killed 3 of the 5 sternguard including sarge with the powerfist :( and I didn't want to auto-fail my morale as I probably wouldn't have rallied for the rest of the game. He finished shooting (not one shot at the LR - go figure), and then declared a charge with the tactical squad. I was about to sigh because this surely would not go well then out of no where Andy steps up and says "how are you charging? Is that tac squad relentless?" The kid says "I fired their bolt pistols." Andy quickly replies, "Only sarge has a bolt pistol, the rest have bolters." I get an evil grin realizing Andy is teaching this kid a lesson making him eat his WYSIWYG complaints. It was quite epic. The kid broke out his rule book and protested, and Andy said, "My ruling is final, in this game if its not modeled, you don't have it, and those 7 marines have bolters only and you shot with them."
Anyhow totally epic schooling, maybe I will play some more at the LGS. I ended up winning the game, the kid couldn't really pull it back together after that the remaining Sternguard plus the dread piled in the his scoring units with the LR dropping off a wicked payload on his objective holders. The tac dp showed up turn 4 with a bullseye on his objective. Game ended on 6, 2 to 0.
