As it says, brothers. You can choose more than one.

Of all the multiple options I've chosen, I think production values are the most important. If the miniatures are bad, I won't buy it. Production values dictate whether or not the price is worth the purchase. Also, if the game is good, then I'll simply proxy my army if the miniatures are bad.

A new game needs time, so my first and most important factor would be Time.
It should appeal and not cost an arm and a leg.

Did start 40k without any possible opponents at hand, so an active local hobby community seems nice to have but isn't a must if I got my own methods of transportation.

I look for clear rules and awesome models but if I can't convince a few of my friends to try it out I ain't buying it.

I tend to agree (about the models being nice). I would have to say Extensive Background is my number two. Although that doesn't explain why I can't get into WHFB.

I don't think I'd get as far as knowing that the game was good if I didn't like the quality of the miniatures. In that case everyone I know would have to want to play the game for me to get in to it.

Your LGS also needs to start carrying the game if you want it to have any legs. But they probably won't do that if it's only being requested by two guys, depending on the size of the store.

I tried to break that into as many categories as I could think of. If you have more specific suggestions, I'd be glad to add them to the poll.

I see yeh but not one of the options is as simple as: Is the game any good? Which lets face it, can't be made more simple. It's still the primary factor for me though, I would decide whether I enjoyed the game or not before looking at anything on your list.

I guess that's assumed. I don't think many gaming startups sit down and debate whether or not their game should be terrible. Also, "good" is incredibly vague. Some people love ridiculously detailed tomes filled with minutae, some people love fast paced evocative combat that relies on abstracts. Most people wouldn't take the time to distinguish a "bad" game from a game that just isn't for them.

Although to be honest I'd play a game that I only thought was "ok" if enough of my friends played it and I liked the models, so maybe it's a valid category.

Well yeh. Obviously it's subjective.

@whatwhat: I kind of see what you mean--well, let me rephrase: are you saying the factor is whether a game is enjoyable as separate from its rules, production, popularity, etc.?

No but it can certainly be separate from all your given options. For example, I enjoy Inquisitor. I don't necromunda. The reason why I don't enjoy one over the other can't be explained by any of your given options.

I would say that Production value, right above a an affordable price, is the most important thing. As long as the miniatures look great, there is a chance I will give in to the shiny, and pick some of the figures up. But if the price is high, there is a smaller chance that I will pick the game up; money does not grow on trees.

Well, like I said, if you can articulate it I will gladly add it.

For me, the only one I checked was production values cuz all I care about is how cool the models are

I'm really surprised affordable price has ranked so high. This site is still primarily about 40k, right?

..............and 40k armies are sooo cheap.

Maybe the shinys from Forgeworld consumed the income already, new games have to live from the leftover scraps then.

^That is pretty much the case except it's the regular armies that suck up the money. I mean if I have 100 dollars I could spend that on a game I already know I like, 40k, or I could risk it and buy a starter army from another game, say WotR, or Flames of War. The problem is I am less inclined to do so unless I know there will be people to play against and that the models are nice. But over all the starter costs must be cheap, 100 for a two player small game is about right but might be pushing it.
