What would be your 40k Mercenaries army (take anything from any codex following foc) for 1850?
Gaming Club I was in did this a long time ago had a 40k Mercenaries tournament where you could take anything from any codex as long as you followed the FoC and were 1850 or under points. Course people did a lot of borrowing and reasonable proxies were allowed and it was good fun but that was 2 editions ago. So what would be your 1850 list for such an event under 5th edition rules.

I think Guard Heavy Support plus a shield of defensive, counter-charging Space Wolf Infantry would be a pretty tough nut to crack, so I'd do it for the gameplay.
I'd also love to do Guard plus Tau, with the Guardsmen modeled as Gue'Vessa (Tau Human Auxilliaries) just because I've always loved that aspect of Tau Fluff. Imagine Leman Russ' and Hammerheads, side by side, pounding the enemy ranks with their big cannons!
I think that is a very good question!
I do believe that a unit of 10 deep-striking terminators led by a Wolf-guard pack leader would be an amazing, if rather expensive mercenary force. backed up by a unit of dark eldar warriors in a Rhino APC for capturing objectives and a Squad of I.G mortars to Pin the enemy in place. Any points left would be spent on gretchin to soak up the bullet, or possibly gaunts instead.
On a themed note, a Space marine captain tooled up for close-combat (A renegade who seeks justice for his banishment), accompanied by some I.G veterans (professional soldiers he worked with beforehand) and a mob of ork shoota boyz (Blood Axes!) would form the core of my army, backed up by Khorne berzerkers (along for the ride...), Kroot carnivores (Mercs by nature, fighting for survival), and maybe a small squad of Khorne Bloodletters in a razorback APC (haunted vehicle, bound to the captain's will).
Many and varied forces in progress according to waxing & waning whims.
I may never finish an army in my life.

Codexes are internally balanced as well as externally balanced.
Orks have little ranged anti tank, and that balances them out somewhat.
If they suddenly have access to Fire Dragons or Leman Russ, it becomes a horrible mess.

This thread isn't about how balanced it would be, it's about what you would take given free reign over any unit in the game.
And besides, Codices aren't externally balanced. They're designed in a vacuum and, sometimes, even the units within the Codex are designed within a vacuum, with no thought given as to how they would interact with other units in the same Codex.
Sounds pretty funny, but i suspect that cannot be in my FLGS.... too short minded, but hey! a short campaign (rather than a tournament) can be cool... maybe a campaign gave the opportunity to "explain" the .... fluff about your force... its obvious that in a tournament all people will become, as we say here, HArd-asses, in way to win the match (unfortunately, a very common attitude).... that takes me to another thing, i remind in whfb there was a chart of possible alliances.... and in a similar fashion adapt it to 40k....

I just thought of 2 orbital bombardments (WH and SM) with IG and Tau support. THAT would be cool and fun. A mix of Imperium of Man, Tau and Eldar. At 1850.
EDIT: With this music playing in the background.

I don't know points cost for any army other than my own but...
I'm thinking a 24 man crusader squad of black templar (ten marines ten neophtes 1 chap 3 servitors)
emperiors champion
2 deamon princes (with wings)
one squad of warriors (tryanids)
gene stealers
ven dread with las cannon and missle launcher
carnifex
fill the rest with guants for a meat sheild
not sure what that comes to points wise, but it would be a nasty CC army to face I think
Let' see... guesstimating the points, because I'm too lazy to do the math...
HQ:
Canoness+Celestians w/Flamer+Heavy Flamer, in Chimera w/HB+Heavy Flamer
Troops:
3xBattle Sister Squads w/2x Meltaguns in Chimeras w/HB+Heavy Flamer
Fast Attack:
2x squadrons of 2 Armored Sentinel w/Plasma Cannons
1 squadron of 2 Scout Sentinels w/Heavy Flamers
Heavy Support:
3x squadrons of 1 Leman Russ Battle Tank w/HB Sponsons

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I would run a human 'ironman/warmachine weapon suits' unit as my merc theme, so...
9 oblits or 9 ASS Broadsides, converted as ponderous heavy armored suits
9 MM attack bikes, converted as speedy suits with treadfeet (ala zakus)
9 Deathrain, converted as starcraft marauder suits with a bit more speed
Either Oshava or Conversion Beamer on a Bike for Merc leader
2 Min IST as the trainees yet to get their weapon suit

But yeah, I'd work out a Dark Angel and Space Wolf list to include as much fail/win as universally possible, taking the worst Space Marine book and cocktailing it with the best, divide by zero and we have ourselves a winner!

Hmm - I don't really know that much about space marines as I just got back into the game, but I remember some really good salamanders commander which made flamers kick ass. Is that Vulkan like candy.man mentioned? Redardless:
Salamanders Commander (Vulkan?)
2x10 SoB w/ Flamer, Heavy Flamer
1x9 Sister Dominion with x4 flamers
3x Land Raider Redeemers
Toss in some anti Tank with the rest, no idea what - I just want to watch some burn
Another option, and again, I have no idea on point costs, but:
Salamanders Commander (Vulkan?)
2x15 SoB w/ Flamer, Heavy Flamer
1x14 SoB w/ Flamer, Heavy Flamer
3x Baal Predators
3x Land Raider Crusaiders
Something along those lines. The last one has prompted quite a bit of wondering as to how I could really get something similar to work through GK and sister allies.
Orkses is never beated in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die so it don't count as beat. If we runs for it we don't die neither, so we can always come back for anuvver go, see!
