I've recently gotten into 40k and have chosen to play Space Wolves, owing to the fact that 8ft tall Space Vikings couldn't possibly be any more awesome

After a lot of reading here and on other 40k sites I have put together a 2000 point army that I want to try building. My question is if you all think it will be competitive. I know being new to the hobby i shouldn't worry about competitiveness but the fact of the matter is I don't want to spend months and lots of cash to build an army that once i finish i just lose with... so while i picked my army based on how cool they were, the units in it were decided based on usefulness.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HQ:

Wolf Lord. 235 points.
(TWM, Frost Axe, Storm Shield, Runic Armor, Wolf Tooth Necklace, 2x Fen Wolves)

Rune Priest w/ Chooser of the Slain (Living Light & Murderous Hurricane). 110 points.

Rune Priest (Living Light & Jaws of the World Wolf). 100 points.

Elites:

3 Wolf Guard w/Combi Melta, PF. 129 points.

Troops:

9 Grey Hunters w/Melta, Mark, Standard & Rhino. 200 points.

8 Grey Hunters w/Melta, Mark, Standard & Rhino. 185 points.

8 Grey Hunters w/Melta, Mark, Standard & Rhino. 185 points.

Fast Attack:

5 Thunder Wolf Cavalry w/ 1x Power Fist 5x Storm Shield. 430 points.

Heavy:

6 Long Fangs w/ 5x Missile Launchers. 215 Points
--Razorback w/ Twin Linked Las Cannon.

6 Long Fangs w/ 5x Missile Launchers. 215 Points
--Razorback w/ Twin Linked Las Cannon.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That, SHOULD come out to 2004 points... if something is wrong please tell me.

The idea of the army from what I've read of the tactica and seen people play will be to move the Grey Hunters around to take/hold objectives, cover fire will be provided by the Long Fangs and last but not least the TWC should roam the field killing tanks/enemy HQ's ect ect... especially ranged specialized enemy units.

Any critiques would be appreciated as I've only played 2 games of 40k in my life so far so I've probably forgotten something important. Also I know I started with a high point cost but I don't intend to get all of this right away, it is simply something to build towards. I always thought there was no point in buying models of lower point games that won't get used in my ending army as it's a waste of money and god knows 40k isn't cheap lol. So all of my lower point armies will be made up of pieces of this one... most likely RP+3xGH squads+what ever else i can fit in at that point cost.

Thank you all in advance!

So... no one has any ideas or advice at all?

I would gear my thunderwolf cavalry different from each other for wound allocation

I would say take out the second rune priest, and use the points for some fenrisian wolves to run as a screen force for your TWC.

Black Fangs 1500pts.
Bronze Knights 1500pts.

I would switch the razor TL Las to Las/TL Plasma. More firepower

OK that pack of Thunderwolves is way too expensive, and I think your Wolf Lord should be equipped slightly differently.

Here is the setup I run when taking Thunderwolf Cavalry and I have had excellent success with it:

Wolf Lord - 280
Thunderwolf Mount, Runic Armor, Storm Shield, Wolf Claw, Wolftooth Necklace, Saga of the Warrior Born, 2x Fenrisian Wolves

4 Thunderwolves - 295
2x Storm Shields, Thunder Hammer, Meltabomb

My reasons:
Four Thunderwolves is plenty, and taking another makes the unit just that much larger physically, and they are already difficult to move on a crowded board. Also, Storm Shields for each member of the unit are generally not necessary. Two is usually plenty to absorb all those AP1 and 2 shots when combined with the Wolf Lord. Other than that, gearing each model differently allows you to stack wounds where you want them and excess failed wounds do not transfer over to other models if one model fails more saves than he has wounds.

As for your Wolf Lord, taking Saga of the Bear is essential so he can absorb S10 shots from Railguns or Vindicators without fear of being killed via instant death. Each wound he absorbs is one less Thunderwolf that dies instantly. As for the weapon choice, I prefer the Wolf Claw, because a S5 power weapon with re-rolls to wound is usually better than a S6 power weapon without. The WTN allows you to pretty much always choose to re-roll wounds.

Taking that setup saves 90 points and leaves you with 86 to spend to keep the list at the 2k limit. For that you can get a Predator with an Autocannon and Heavy Bolter sponsions, bringing you to 1,999. Your other unit selections look perfect, though I might swap the TL Lascannons on your Razorbacks for LasPlas, partially for the extra shots at closer range and partially because it gives them a second weapon system and makes them more durable. For your second Rune Priest I would suggest taking Murderous Hurricane as your primary power, and then choose from Jaws of the World Wolf (if you face a lot of low initiative opponents or Tyranid MC's), Tempest's Wrath (if you face a lot of Blood Angels Jumpers, Chaos Daemons, Drop Pod lists or Eldar Skimmers), or Storm Caller (if you face a lot of gunline Imperial Guard or Space Marine lists). Each of those three powers are fine, but each one is situational and you should choose which one you take based off of your local meta. If you have a general mix, then any one of the three is OK.

This is just my opinion of course, so feel free to use anything you like and scrap what you don't. I hope that helps!

Wow Aldarionn thank you, that's exactly the kind of response I was hoping for!

If i was to use a Wolf Lord+TWC army, I would probably go with:

Rune Priest w/ chooser, Jaws, Living Lightning: 110

Wolf Lord w/ TWMount, Wolf Claw, Storm Shield, Wolf Talisman, 2 f-wolves, Runic Armor, Saga of WB or Bear, depending on your taste (WB lets you owns things, Bear lets you suck at invul saves) - 275

4 Wolf Guard w/ Power fists and Combi-Meltas - 172

6 Grey Hunters w/ Melta, Wolf Standard, MotW, Rhino - 155

6 Grey Hunters w/ Melta, Wolf Standard, MotW, Rhino - 155

6 Grey Hunters w/ Melta, Wolf Standard, MotW, Rhino - 155

7 Grey Hunters w/ Melta, Wolf Standard, MotW, Rhino - 170

4 Thunderwolf Cav w/ 1 Thunder Hammer, 1 Bolter, 1 Melta Bombs - 235

5 Long fangs w/ 4 Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ Las/Plas - 190

5 Long fangs w/ 4 Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ Las/Plas - 190

5 Long fangs w/ 4 Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ Las/Plas - 190

Total: 1997 (3 points...give the Rune Priest a storm bolter )

So...it's: Only 1 rune priest, 4 slightly smaller GH units (i know 6 seems like a low number, but its not too different from 8, and if you really want some more, make your WL a WGBL, and up them to three groups of 7 and 1 w/ 6 and the rune priest, and with the Wolf Guards you'll be more then fine), and a third LF/RB unit, with a slightly more fragile thunderwolf deathstar unit. I left the Wolf Necklace off because i didn't have the points, and i don't really see it being worth it since the only time you'll ever be rolling to hit with anything anything but a 3+ is against WS6+ models (so, like huge scary things), which you probably should have already killed with you're razorbacks/missiles, .

So, basically, use your long fangs and razorbacks to kill things that can really mess them up shooting-wise, and just keep them in cover(the difference between a cover save and a storm shield is +16.6% chance to live and 30 points)/away from vindicators until it is safe to get close enough (19-24 inches) and kill everything.
