i just was wondering if any of you could know what these symptoms should mean, i've had a hacking cough, and in the middle of these bouts of coughing, i sometimes vomit. i find myself gasping for air even though these bouts last only about 10 seconds. any ideas?

Well, you are mainly looking at two "main" causes for a cough. Mainly being cause by infection, or non infection.

Infection can include:
*Common Cold
*pneumonia
*whooping cough (Pertussis)
ect ect

Non Infection can include:
*bronchitis
*asthma
*Allergies
ect ect

The throwing up is most likely a side effect of your deep seated, persistant coughing and is your bodys way of reacting to it since the cough can't clear what is irritating your resp tract.

At any rate, you need to see a Doctor. Even though some of us on here actually have medical training, never EVER trust anything anyone has to say on the internet when it comes to your health.

I am a doctor and I'd say see your doctor.
Coughing fits and gasping for air mean you'll need testing for whooping cough. If you have it and it is the first couple weeks you will need antibiotics and you'll need to keep away from babies and the unvaccinated until 7 days of antibiotics.

Or it could be bronchitis.

Rather than see a doctor, why don't you just let nature run its course Are you familiar with the 80s rap artists "The Ghetto Boyz"? In the song, "My Mind is Playing Tricks" they describe symptoms similar to yours: "every time my eyes close I start sweating and blood comes out my nose."
