There are many techniques to doing rust that range from the simple to complex, although I have only attempted one, I know of several methods of doing rust.

A simply one is stippling (or a very light dry brush can work) a mix of brown and orange onto the area you want rusty, and slowly increase the amount of orange.

Or if you want a more tarnished look, devlan mud and gurphoon (sp?) sepia are saviors, give it a few thin washes of that stuff to get a grubby (but not quite rusty effect)

And if you want to splash some cash, forge world do a range of weathering powders which you can mix a little with water and paint onto the area you want rusty IIRC.

There was also a WD a while back with tips on rust effects, I'll try an dig that up for you.

Rust? Try either painting it first with a red-brown colour, and then stippling it with metal colours, or the other way around. Worked well for me.

edit: damn, ninjad.

Found some advanced techniques in that WD I was talking about, are you interested in oil stains and verdigris (its that kind of turquoise/green colour that appears on badly maintained metal. Well it doesn't matter cause I'm telling you anyway.

Oil stains:
1: add ogryn flesh (thats a wash) in streaks where you wish to start the oil.

2: paint a thin layer of devlan mud over the previous coat.

3: apply a thin line of badab black where the oil is most viscous, in the center of the previous coat.

Verdigris:
1: Wash hawk turquoise where you want to start the effect (a picture shows it in the recesses and around rivets)

2: wash a 1:1 mix of hawk turquoise and bleached bone in the same areas

3: use a 1:1:1 mix of hawk turquoise, bleached bone and skull white and apply it to the center of the verdigris areas.

The issue is 362 from February 2010. It has WFB beastmen on the cover.

I use the recipe for rust provided for the fantasy skaven/ogres.

Basically boltgun metal with chainmail highlights, then wash with devlan mud. Stipple on first bestial brown, making sure to apply it in a realistic way (i.e. look at how rust forms on real metal objects) then stipple on blazing orange. Then use mithril silver to add chips and scratches to the area where the rust is likely to be worn away (e.g. the edge of a sword is sharpened regularly so will not be rusty).
