Anyone?

My Google-fu is weak at present and even the GW site does not feature any alternate paint schemes for SoB players...

Anyone got any favourite recipes for SoB?

Eg. Steel/Grey; Crimson; White; Ivory...

Black is a given, but Im looking for inspiration and ideas on how these colours are best achieved, including details:

Ie. shade - base - highlight and heraldry/details

Thank you in advance.

The colours of my sisters are blue and red.

I want to ask you not to blindly copy this by the way.
The blue was done by priming the model Skull White and then washing the armour with Asurmen Blue. Then i picked out al the little bolts with Chaos Black and then Mithril Silver. The iconography just got a Codex Grey wash, because I wanted them to stay white.

The red was done by just highlighting, so:
Scab Red
Scab Red + Blood Red
Blood Red
Blazing Orange

The last highlight is just the highest edges of the clothing.

I hope this helped a bit. Again, dont blindy copy my paintscheme but try to use these techniques on your miniatures. Blue clothing for example.

Thanks for the heads up on techniques.

I have a handful of sisters that I got cheap and Im using them to test out different recipes for hair and skin tones, but still wanted their armour to look good cos they will simply be re-sold or displayed when Im done with them.

Might try your recipe on one of them, but the rest will be of the colours I asked for in my original post. I actually painted one yesterday and did her as follows:

Turquoise armour, white robes, silver/white gold true metallic symbols/details.

As to your wash technique, as a test I painted an entire model with just white primer and 3 inks from the Vallejo Game Colour range. It was quite effective. The result is my Ice Golem, pics are on the Wyrd forums.

Did a cannonness that I really liked the scheme for and will probably do at least a Celetians squad to match.

Armor is just Boltgun, Mithril with a Badab Black wash over it

The 'mantle' is Lich Purple, with Badab Black and highlights of Warlock Purple at the tips, then a Leviathon wash

Cloak is base coated with Deneb, then Bleached Bone, washed with Devlan mud from the bottom up to give it an 'in the dirt' kind of feel.

EDIT: The inside of the cloak is Liche Purple with a dry brush of Graveyard Earth for the same 'muddy' effect and all gold is simply shining gold with badab black on it

I love the flames on the backpack of your cannonness Timonth, they look much more vibrant than mine. Looks like you use more yellow? I used a lot of red, and orange with washes of Badab and Baal.

Thanks calypso2ts,

Perhaps I can clean up your recipe a bit... Im not a fan of making things look dirtier, unless the diorama calls for it. Even then, my weathering and grime are clean... cant help it.

That is fine, I wanted to go for the effect like her cloak had been dragging along a dusty surface and accumulated wear at the bottom. Simply washing it once in an even coat of Devlan or its equivalent, would probably give the same shade.

How did you paint the 'burnt' effect on her melta pistol?

I love the depth of color on both those models, the blending is incredible as well. I would hope (someday) I can get to that level...just wow.

The end of the Melta pistol is:
Prime Black
Shining Gold
Badab Black Wash
Drybrush Scorched Brown (think that is the color, the dark brown GW one)
Drybrush Chaos Black

I started all the drybrushing at the tip and worked backwards to fade it down the barrel. I started doing all my Meltas that way after since I liked the effect and it made it seem more 'sup heated' to me.

Edit: My only real 'regret' on that model is the purity seals. I did them skull white with a devlan mud wash. I like the GW recipe from WD using Deneb stone much better.

Cam,

Did you get banned from WAU again?

Anyway to help you out I'd go with these.

Bone/Ivory.
Base with Dheneb Stone, then wash with Gryphionne Sepia, that will give you your darkest shade. Then apply bone and blend to a final highlight of white. You could instead of the wash stage base with Snakebite leather and work through Bone and then onto White.

White
Base Space Wolves Grey, wash with Asurmen Blue (only lightly - will give your shadow). Rebase with Space Wolves grey and then blend up to White. It gives a nice effective white with little effort.

Crimson
Base with a 50/50 Mix of Scab Red and Black. Blend to scab red and then up to Red Gore. That should give you a strong crimson colour, if you were looking for a brighter final highlight just mix 50/50 Red gore and Blood red and then use Blood red by itself.

Also you could try to using Sanguine Base and Skorne Red if you have access to P3 paints, they give a fantastic Crimson colour. Especially if you work with some juicing/glazing.

Steel/Grey
Base with Astronomican Grey
Wash with Badab Black
Rebase with Astronomican Grey
Then blend to whatever grey/white you want.

Easy!

PM me here or on WAU or wherever if you need anything else.

Hey Ty!

Thanks for your input.

Yes, suspended cos I tried to help out a newbie to Malifaux by directing them to an online Indy. A bricks and mortar sponsor got their panties in a twist and began lying through their teeth. I then called tenebrae 'chubby' (which according to Mods is worse than Senexis calling Saleh'Uddin "Captain Islam")

Mmm, that is rather brutal. Especially the whole online Indy thing, normally it's a polite warning. And the 'name calling', Wow. When do you get back?

Hey Ty,

What consistency did you use for your blends when building up the layers?

Still the paint viscosity? Or did you water them down to glazes?

I want this result: http://warhammer.org.uk/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=48416&hilit=sisters+of+battle

This is the guide that Ordo just mentioned then:

White:
In order to get a very pristine and clean white I used shadow grey and space wolf grey, as they have a blue tint to them which makes the white look very clean.

- Start with a solid white spray base-coat of skull white to the model. I did a couple of thin careful coats to make sure I got a solid foundation.
- Use watered down shadow grey to line into all the recesses
- Use space wolf grey to blend this into the white a little, and to add shading into the less shallow recesses
- Use white to touch everything up (and you can knock back areas that are too dark with a glaze or two - for example the eviserators freehand was done in shadow grey first, then knocked back to the pale shade it is with a few glazes of skull white.)

By looking at it, he has just run with a regular layering thickness.

Normally, viscosity depends on the paint for me. I mean some of my paints are fairly watery and others are thicker so your amount of water varies accordingly.

I use a wet palette so that does help with viscosity a bit, I also generally make sure my brush is damp (not soaked but wet) and then maybe a little more water with some paints like foundations. I really find it is a feel thing more than anything, you eventually just get the feel for your paints and what you need to do to them to make them workable. Just try to avoid pooling from too much water and streaks from not enough.

I just love that guy's models.. The bases are awesome too.

I've got a boatload of sisters on their way and I plan on copying this person too.

Some of the vehicles I'll be receiving are already primered black; is it hopeless to try to paint these white without stripping them?

No, not at all. Just use a full layer of Shadow grey as your base (will go over black fairly well, well better than white at least.) rather than simply washing the model with it. Then continue with the palette from there.

I dont care who posted the link, its not the point of my reply.

I realise the guy has a guide posted in his link, however, it is not comprehensive and I was asking Winter what consistency he used for his (similar) recipe. This is due to the varying meanings for 'thin' paint. Some water it down til it is a glaze and apply many layers, while others only add enough water to allow for better flow.

Thanks for your quick response mate.

Will we see you at MOAB?

Unfortunately not. For one I don't have an entirely painted army which is a bit disappointing, but I have finally ordered my Infinity 2 in 1 so I will happily be able to speed up my painting process. Space Marine armour takes far too long.

Following that I probably won't be able to get time off of Uni anyway, maybe next year. I am hoping to start planning on attending tournies etc, even if it is just in the Sydney area in NSW maybe Cancon etc, but we shall see I guess.

Who is there? I used to see Kyle occasionally when I was frequently GW Sydney more often during uni (when it allowed me the breaks) but I never actually had a chance to sit down and paint with him, considering it was during the time he worked there.

I would kill to sit in with him, Seb and Mathieu for a weekend and just learn from them, would be so very very awesome.

Tomorrow I will be moving house, but should be able to find time for some of these.

However, I am still trying to locate a tasteful recipe for Gold and Metallic Silver armour.

I have also been playing around with Turquoise armour, with either Scaly Green or Necron Abyss base for shades.

Let me know what you think... I would love to put up a step-by-step on this eventually.
