My IG friend has just recently started using a semi-infantry based guard army, and we came to an odd situation involving kill points. The answer is probably very clear, but I haven't read through how platoons work as I don't own the codex. But here is the question:

Is a platoon worth 1 kill point as it takes up 1 slot in the FOC, or does each individual squad in the platoon count as a kill point? To my limited knowledge, platoons started together but the squads can then break up during the game?

Alright, so yea that's my question. And if someone would like to give a short, maybe 3 sentence long description on how platoons work (if what I explained is incorrect), that would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: A conclusion was difficult to come by during the game because it seemed like if the entire platoon was worth one kill point, that's a lot of killin for not a lot of winnin. If each squad was a kill point. . .well, orks are born for fightin and winnin, nuff said.

Each unit is worth a KP, and each platoon has a certain set of units.
Dedicated transports also count, so a single Infantry platoon can be worth 20 KP's...

Note that a blob squad (2-5 combined infantry squads) is only worth 1.

Yes - as above:

Each unit you kill is worth 1 KP
Vehicles are seperate units
Different squads are seperate units.

Thus, despite what you may have seen in another thread, one platoon is NOT one unit, it is composed of multiple units.

This is the reason, mainly, that guard can blob squad - it drastically reduces a platoons KPs.

50 Guardsmen, 1 Commissar, 5 Meltas, 5 Lascannons.

Gross, hard to beat, and 1 KP.

And also cost close to 450p, without any power weapons.

The correct answer has already been given in spades, but it's worth mentioning that kill points and the FOC have no connection whatsoever. If they did, units that didn't take up an FOC slot, such as Honour Guards, Ministorum Priests, and Dedicated Transports would never give up killpoints.

Alright, good point on the last post.

What's with the blob squad you're talkin about though. What's the difference between that and a platoon that hasn't broken up. Or was my friend incorrect, and platoons start broken up into the seperate squads?

Maybe I just oughta steal his codex and take a look at the set up.

Platoons start out broken. Then you can join together the infantry squads (and only them, not the special weapons, not the heavy weapons, nothing else) with other infantry squads to get one big unit, otherwise know as "the blob".

And yes, this one eats humans too.

Platoon start "broken up". It's a single FoC selection with multiple individual units. Of those, some may join to form a larger single unit. I'll note that ONLY the Platoon Infantry Squads may do this, not Special Weapon Squads, Heavy Weapon Squads, Conscripts, or the Platoon Command Squad, despite that they're all the same Platoon.

And if you replace the special weapons with power swords and give the commy melta bombs, the only thing that can save you is going first or lots of bodies

I wouldn't swap out the special weapons though, the lascannons feel like the better bet.

Ahhh, ok yea that pretty much clears it up then, thanks. As I already stated, he told me that platoons started together. It makes much more sense when they start broken up.

Except, of course, that the commie cannot have meltabombs. So you just put them on the Sgts.

5 Power Weapons...5 meltabombs.

I'd rather have 5 lascannons, and 5 meltas, that can fire as twin-linked when ordered to "Bring It Down"

Oddly enough, the codex lets you have BOTH!!!!! Yep, you can have lascannons, and meltabombs, and meltaguns, and power weapons. All in one squad! And you can join 5 of those squads togehter (I prefer three, much more manageable).

So does this mean that sniper teams from the Tau army can be worth a total of up to 3 KP?
