Why is it that my meltagunners are always completely incompetent? Whenever i get them into the perfect spot to microwave the side of a Land Raider or to give a Carnifex some major brain cancer he always misses. I mean COME ON!!! How hard can it be to hit something the size of a house from 10 feet away?

My solution to this problem: Give a BS bonus to anyone shooting at a tank or MC from within 12 inches. This isn't unreasonable, is it? It's the size of a fething house for Emperor's sake!

If Warhammer has taught me anything, it is that anything and everything can be solved by violence.

The current "To Hit" rolls take into account not only your ability to aim but the possibility of the weapon jamming and other battlefield elements.

Maybe you SM should clean his gun out between fights?

That would be interesting, but it seems strange to only have it in this one instance. A meltagun only has a 12" range, so if you're at 12", the gun can barely fire that far, whereas a lascannon is only at 1/4 of its max distance. Also, shooting at a large horde should be easier than shooting at a single model, right?

Perhaps if you came up with a system that worked well across multiple ranges and enemy sizes. Although, I think any proposal would throw off the current game balance.

Indeed, that happens in our games as well.

In a recent blood angels game I had a turn with 5 meltas at short range for a Chaos Land Raider and got nothing! 2 dreadnoughts, 2 from an assault squad and one from a Sanguinary priest.

3 missed and 2 hit and failed with 4 and 3 pen rolls on 2D6.

it can be really difficult to have built a good list, set up a bait, move into position and have the dice go flat, where even marginal success would have achieved the goal and instead get... nothing.

While I can't stand that occurring in games, as it seems completely beyond the pale, I caution about a 'fix' because...

I think this kind of thing led to all the re-rolls that 5th has though, and as much as I hate missing with my melta guns I think Vulkan Hestan leading 1/2 the marine armies out there is a bigger atrocity. Quite honestly I don't like most of the re-rolls, and I don't think it's to much of a stretch to think they came from people with this same concern.

Fortune
Preferred Enemy
Vulkan
Twin Linked
etc...

Missing is terrible but in the Japanese sense, a game is not soley about the highs of victory but also the depths of failure. It is an important part of the game. Be careful what you wish for you may get it.

Imagine if every codex had a Vulkan Hestan...

We seem to take these trips too often...

The game isn't a true accurate representation of the actual battle. It's just a simulation of a fight, for example when your models are shooting each other, they're taking cover, and exchanging fire, not standing out in the open, standing up, shooting at whatever they see. Close combat is an exceptional example of this. It's actually supposed to represent a moving, twirling fight between the two groups, not them standing still hacking mindlessly at the person directly infront of them.

Therefore, 40k is merely a game, if you except an actual representation of a battle, play Dark Heresy or something...

Hi all.
As many have said.
40k is a game used to sell a range of minatures.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH COMBAT SIMULATION.
Even though most tactical focused combat simulation rules are far more intuitive elegant and intuitive than the 40k rule set.

For example rather give a unit EXACTLY the same chance to hit anything anywhere in weapons range.

Other rule sets , set the chance to hit the target ON the target unit.
EG Land raider 2+ to hit.
Lone IG sniper 5+ to hit.

And things like cover and max range make the attacker re roll HIGH values to hit.

And things like being stationary and subsequent shots at the same target make the attacker re roll LOW values to hit.

At the rate of 1 pip per factor.

Maybe your Melta-man gets worried around MC or vehicles. I think that would be a good ofset for being closer to the target.
