In the world of 40k, it is mainly about skirmishes and engagements on the ground, but what about the control of the skies? Who has the best aircraft. Which race is Ace?

If you were to pit all 40k aircraft fighters against eachother, who would win?

Tyranids use Harridans, Harpies and Gargoyles. None of which would be a match for an aircraft with proper air-to-air weapons in a 1v1 scenario.

But Tyranids don't do 1v1 scenarios.

So it's pretty much down to Eldar and Tau huh?
Let's see:
Imperial Navy: They have lightning's. Most pilots don't survive their first few missions. They also use Valkyrie Vendettas... and marauder destroyers... they might actually have a chance...

Tau: I actually don't know what they use...

Orks: Fighta Bomba, more likely to crash on the runway then actually take off.

Eldar: Nightwings, Vampire Hunters, pheonix, void dragon pheonix.

Tyranids: Already mentioned.

Dark Eldar: Do these people even have aircraft?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok, I looked up Tau aircraft:

Remora stealth fighters (drones), Barracuda's, Tiger Sharks. Manta... is it air-to-air or air-to-ground?

Orks: I forgot deffkoptas and and "chinork (GW must like chinooks) warcopta."

Dark Eldar: Raven wings, void dragons.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Chaos: Hell Talons, Hell Blades.

So, who wins? All these aircraft, pitted against one another. Which is the overall best fighter?

Orks.

Fighta-Bomba skwadrons can be quickly converted to effective ground force.

The Waaagh!!! also means that the craft isn't going to get shot down till the pilot's shot.

Read Deff Skwadron

Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...

So a fightabomba can only be downed if its pilot is hit. That is awesome and improves its chances. Lol, it would be funny to see and Ork flying a skeleton fighta bomba. It's just him and his chair, in midair, with a few flashy bits hanging around.
Personally, I am going with Eldar for now... it's hard to kill shadows.

Woot! 100 posts.

Its hard to kill a single Ork plane when they've taken the "Arrows Will Blot Out The Sun" approach to Air doctrine.

RL Air Combat rarely has one or two sides with tens of thousands of aircraft committed to a single sortie.

I have to say Imperial or Eldar, I'm not sure where the idea that most Imperial pilots die comes from though?

in the taros book it states that while the Tau have better tech in there airforce, the imperials have the edge in experiance that the Tau simply cannot match, this is why the Tau targeted there airbases ASAP.

however orks have numbers, quantity is a quality of its own, to quote a famous general
"one of my tigers is worth 10 or your shermans, its a shame you always bring an eleventh"

It comes from an Imperial Armour Book. Something along the lines off:

Imperial fighter pilots who survive their first few battles are rare, but those few pilots who actually manage to survive entire campaigns become heroes of the Imperium, their names boom within the Imperium as the greatest Aces of the Imperial navy. However, these Aces are still usually short lived.

In other words, all imperial lightning pilots have a very short life expectancy.

Oh, and, Welcome to Dakka!

By fluff in the Epic rule books and actual practice Eldar beat everyone, including Tau, without difficulty. Plus they look epic cool.

Easily Eldar. Fluff and rules.

Also are we talking just interceptors and other air-to-air roles or just aircraft in general?
