I was doing some pondering the other day, and was thinking about making a standard forum-recommended armylist for Vanilla SMs? This list would be a culmination of all the Dakka-Dakka community, and would generally represent a good *starter* point for any new SM player. I further thought this idea out and came up with a plan to possibly do it for every single race. Now this may seem daunting to begin with, but with some work and time, I think it would become a very very beneficial Guide to any new players to 40k.

I was thinking of doing two Army-lists for each 40k Race, one 500 pts & 1000 pts. Now I understand that everyone has different opinions on certain units and such, but I hope through discussion we can all come to general armylists that we can all support. These lists would be an "All Comers" army, so to offer variety and diversity if needed.

From there, I think I would do some research and see how much each army would take to build. Now this would all be based off of prices at the current date, as well as the armies themselves would reflect current trends/editions. Hopefully over time this could become a very popular guide to help out alot of us whom were lost at the beginning, and avoid those who say "Ooooh shiney Land Raider! Definitely will fit in with my 500 points army..."

So ideas/suggestions/support/opposition is all welcomed!
Also would I be able to post such a guide in the Army-List Sub-forum????

I think it's a great idea!

To get you started, basically the only 500 point Necron list that's feasible is two groups of 10 warriors (360 points) and a point Necron lord with a destroyer body + warscythe or a Lord with a Resurrection orb (I myself prefer the first option).

This would be (for the first option) $151 Australian so around $146 American and around 93£ English (assuming that my currency converter is correct and you're buying from GW and not an online retailer)

For the second option it would be $135 Australian so around $130 American and around 83£ English (same conditions as above)

Thank you sir for your contribution. I am currently writing up a list for SW, BA, Vanilla SM, & IG. I will add your Necron recommended list. I am hoping to have 500 pts & 1000 pts for each race.

On another note, where should I post this? Will it get better attention on the Armylists section? Is it okay to make a post such as this in that subforum?

Better constructive critisim would definitely benefit the community as a whole, as well as yourself sir.

I am going to clean up this post a bit and then transfer it to the Army-List subforum. Once there, I will add some prices to some of the items to allow new players who are tight on cash to better prepare themselves.

One problem is that 500 lists don't always scale well up to 1500 or 1850pt lists. Another problem you run into is that many of the more experienced players dont' really play at those low point levels, and so don't have the in game knowledge of what's good.

That said, I'd recommend the following 500pts for IG:

CCS, Plasma x4, melta bomb Chimera 165ptd

Vets, Melta x3, Autocannon, Chimera 165
Vets, Melta x3, Autocannon, Chimera 165

or for the more infantry oriented:

CCS, lascannon, standard 85pts

PCS, GLx4, Melta bomb 50pts
2x Infantry squad w/AC & GL 130pts

PCS, Flamer x4, Melta bomb 50pts
2x Infantry Squad with LC & Plasma 170

At 1000pts, I'd build the following for mechanized:

CCS, Plasma x4,Melta Bomb, Chimera 165pts

PCS, Flamer x4, Melta Bomb, Chimera 105pts
2x Infantry Squad w/ AC & GL 130pts

Vets, melta x3, Chimera 155pts
Vets, melta x3 100pts

Valkyrie, Rocket pods 130pts

Leman Russ Demolisher, Hull lascannon 180pts
Leman Russ Demolisher, Hull lascannon 180pts

And 1000pts of all infantry:

CCS, Lascannon, Standard 85pts
CCS, Lascannon, 70 pts

PCS w/Flamer x4 50pts
3x Infantry Squad w/ AC, GL, Power Weapon 225pts
Commissar, Power weapon 45pts

PCS w/ GL x4 50pts
3x Infantry Squad w/LC, Plasma 255pts
Commissar 35pts
HWS w/ LC x3 105pts

Penal Legion 80pts

As for a good, beginner hybrid IG list, I'd probably recommend the following:

CCS, Plasma x4, Chimera 165pts

PCS, Flamer x4 (ride in vendetta) 50pts
2x Infantry Squad w/ AC, GL, Power weapons 150pts
Commissar, power weapon 45pts

Vets, melta x3, Chimera 155pts
Vets, melta x3, Chimera 155pts

Vendetta 130pts

LRBT, Hull heavy flamer 150pts

Put it up as an Article - it'll be a useful guide to have and it won't get lost after a few months.

I tink it would be useful to show how a Battleforce boxes set could be rolled into a beginners army. I am starting a Tau army with a Battleforce box, and here is what I came up with for 500 points:

HQ
Shas'el: plasma rifle, missle pod, multitracker, hardwired drone controller, 2 gun drones 107 points

Elites
3 Stealth Suits: team leader with hardwired drone controller, 2 gun drones 115 points

Troops
12 Fire Warriors with Devilfish troop transport 200 points
11 Kroot 77 points

Total: 499 points

So that's everyting in the Tau battleforce box, except on Kroot model. It's a bit light on the anti-tank, but one Kroot can be traded for a fusion blaster on a stealthsuit if needed.

Sunblitz Brotherhood: 2000 points (a very nice gift) W:0 L:5 D:0
Amarie's Vertigo Tribe: 1500 points W:5 L:5 D:0
=][= Witch Hunters: 1500 points W:0 L:0 D:0
Void Jackals: 1500 points W:0 L:0 D:0
The Wild Hunt: 1500 points W:0 L:1 D:0

Awesome Stuff guys! I am going to create the article with what has been listed so far. From there, I will post each Army-list up on the subforum to allow it time to get "ripped" apart. Then the modified/consensus army list will be updated to the article.

I'm really enjoying the article, nicely formatted and easy to use. Should end up being a good resource for new players looking for an army to start. I'm looking forward to seeing it completed

1000pts Orks might also have either a dread with mek or a loota squad instead of grotsnik and the ard boys. Both of these are steps towards their respective builds.

I also like this article, and I feel like doing up a list with JUST an IG battleforce box. It won't be competitive in the slightest, but it'll be fieldable with buying JUST the Battleforce Box. Which is the best for a beginner, yes?

HQ

Company Command Squad: Vox, Autocannon, Standard, Carapace Armor, PW (110 pts)

Troops

Veterans: Vox, Lascannon, Carapace Armor, Snare Mines, PW (165 pts)

Veterans: Vox, Lascannon, Carapace Armor, Snare Mines, PW (165 pts)

Fast Attack

Armored Sentinel: Autocannon (60 pts)

Total Points: 500

I would not recommend this list to anyone who wants to win a game ( ), but it'll work for a beginner I think....they're not trying to win, just trying to get the basic rules down. Moreover, these models could easily be expandable to a higher list. The Heavy Weapons can become the base for some reg platoon Heavy Weapons, while the Veterans can help create some melta vets as your collection grows.

BT starting list 500 pts

HQ
Chaplain Reclusiarch = 95pts.................................. total 95pts

Troops
10x initiates= 160pts
1x PW and bolt pistol = 10pts
1x meltagun = 10pts
All others CCW/BP = no cost
5x neophytes = 50pts
CCw and BP all = no cost
Frag grenades all =15pts....................................... total 245

Fast attack
5x assault marines = 110........................................total 110pts
..........................................................................Subtotal 450 pts
This of course leave you 50pts short, that’s because to continue you’ll need to spend some more money.
Buy a box of CCW/BP scouts and fill out the crusader squad with 4 more neophytes armed with CCW/BP (+40pts) (assemble the 5th with CCW/BP as well but set him aside) equip your entire assault squad with melta bombs (+10pts).
.........................................................................Grand total 500pts
Deployment,
Field your crusader squad and Chaplain together

What to do when the starting pistol goes off,
Move your assault squad down field fast, if they have nasty armor destroy it with the melta bombs, if they don’t (or you have already destroyed it) assault the shootiest squad they have. This will tie the unit up in CC and allow your crusader squad to advance largely unmolested by bullets.
During this time when your assault marines were either dying or being a royal pain in your opponent’s ass, your crusader squad should have been moving up, when you are within 12 inches you can fire your BP, when you are within 6 inches assault his infantry, your chaplain will allow you to re-roll failed hits on the charge. Allocate wounds on the neophytes and slaughter your way to victory!

Total cost $160.00 if you buy everything new from GW (battleforce, chaplain, scouts, codex) figure up to 20% saveings if you buy off of ebay.

Feel free to comment on the validity of this list
