Here's my prediction: Barack Obama is given credit for the success of TARP, but people still decide he's a Muslim, and he loses in 2012.

I hope he wins. He's still got 2 years. If people feel better then he'll have a good shot. It's kind of silly how people blame the president for the state of the economy. Does he write laws? no. Is he a ceo? no. a bank president? no. how exactly is he supposed to control the economy.....? sigh. I'm gonna follow the link now.

The funniest part about all of this is that if the republicans gain any sort of power this year, democrats are very likely to react by voting Obama right back into office.

You should know by now that all presidents are master puppeteers pulling the shadowy strings of a giant web of government assassins, faceless black ops hit teams and alien powered doomsday weapons and at the same time drooling morons that are in danger of choking on improperly chewed food.

It's kind of odd... something like TARP was clearly necessary and has ended up costing far less than feared (I remember people here boldly declaring it was destined to cost more than $700 billion).
But it's got a negative public perception so no-one is willing to stand up and explain that it was necessary and very, for fear they would become associated with it. So it keeps its bad rep, so no-one wants to be associated with it, and around and around we go.
|
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

This close to a contentious election no one is going to take a risk on a contentious, difficult to explain issue unless they're forced. I imagine it will get more attention come December when the Presidential campaigning starts.

The President SETS national policies and goals, and appoints those who execute those policies in an attempt to achieve those goals. In this particular case his party has controlled both houses of congress, and passed laws he wanted/advocated and he then signed them, and his appointees (and Czars) carry them out.
I guess it just may be fair to hold him and his party accountable for the results.

mmmm...... congress sets national policies.... and it doesnt always do what the sitting president wants. czars just coordinate between the different government bureaucracies. they don't write laws. or execute them in most cases. they don't even run the bureaucracies. the people who are responsible for the economic downturn arent the bush people..... they're.... the CEOs who let their companies buy and sell bad products.... the people who bought houses they couldnt afford.... the banks that loaned money to people who obviously couldnt repay the loan.... basically, us, the American people. Blaming the politicians for what you or your neighbors do is just childish. The worst you can say of the bush people, IMO, is that their ideas about derregulation turned out to be wrong, in the sense that they believed "hey, if you give the American people enough rope, they won't hang themselves." Turns out they will.

QFT. It was an epic fail for our society across the board.
IMO, Obama's communications team has done a fairly terrible job. They've let the Tea Party nonsense frame too much of the conversation for the coming midterms around spending and not jobs creation and economic stimulus.
Having said that, I think Obama will be re-elected in 2012. Figure the economy will likely be stronger, sitting Presidents always have a huge advantage, the GOP lacks a strong candidate, and ultimately the demographics of the country are still tilting the way of the Dems more every year.

Word. Most people see the tea party guys for what they are: unelectable extremist gas bags. Republicans are too busy fighting themselves over the bail out to mount an effective presidential campaign. If they pick up a few seats this year it's not because they have a program or a coherent leadership. It's because mid terms often favor the opposition. But the presidency? I don't think so. My prediction: the republicans nominate Palin, Obama crushes her in the national election.

You also gave even money that Israel would bomb Iran next week, for the past year.
In any case, the only discussion I've heard regarding Hilary running against Obama has come from politically disconnected liberal bloggers that are essentially riffing on their feelings regarding Hilary, and politically connected conservative bloggers that generally cite politically active members of the Republican Party.
I could see Hilary replacing Biden, no one cares about Biden, but I doubt Hilary will run against Obama. If only because she lost the nomination for the simple fact that she couldn't play to much of the Democrat base, which is usually what is being cited as the reason she could win this time around. Apparently time really does make people forget.
If someone does run against Obama is will be someone to his left, and that isn't Hilary.
