I just dropped £100 on 2 rulebooks and a case using my birthday money (it feels like a waste).
How do you guys pay for this hobby?
(that a actual question, as in to do impulse buy, save, ect?)

I work.
At the moment, I'm basically not buying PS3/PSP/PC/Wii games while I build up my Tyranids. I'll usually get a box a week. Anything big, I still save for or get for Christmas (like my fiancee getting me some Forgeworld goodies).

I find the wealthiest mate I can then I introduce him to the hobby and wait till he has collected a large army (around 2000pts)
I then introduce the above mentioned friend to crack.
I then purchase all his models for feth all after he has pawned everything else.

That sounded more offensive then I am sure you meant it be.
I was primarily meaning which fashion you buy it in.
I tend to save up for a month or 2 then buy a bunch.

Wasn't meant to sound offensive. More I'm annoyed at the cost. I mean, I pay over $100 for a land raider over here.
For how I buy it, I figure out my army, then buy it squad by squad.

The Australian prices are ridiculous. It's cheaper for Australians to order from the UK than buy in local retail.
Go on eBay and search for auctions for secondhand models.
I got most of my Tyranid army about 50% off retail by bidding sensibly on eBay. The drawback is I have to strip a lot of the models.
See the P&M forum and Articles for information on stripping paint. Automatically Appended Next Post: To be frank, though, GW is expensive compared to a lot of games, especially historical wargames.

My job pays for mine when I'm not spending it on school/video games, really. (seriously - was gonna finish my latest 1850 Wolves list off about 2 months ago, then I had to spent like $450 on school supplies...ugh)
That said, I usually buy a box every week or every other week when I'm really focused on the hobby.

I hang around outside my local GW, then when I see a very young schoolkid buy a load of models, I wait for them to get around the corner then *POW*, and run off with their purchase
Well that and only buying stuff when I'm ready to paint it and have no more unpainted stuff in the queue. Always buying big ticket items from discount retailers like dark sphere helps a lot too.

I just work to get the money.
However, it is the cheaper of my 2 hobbies (airsoft being alot more expensive)
I can throw out £400+ on a new army, but then i can also go out and throw £1,000+ on a new gun.
So i dont mind paying for 40k or FB, they are cheaper, and i dont have to spend time repairing them every now and then.

My next purchase is decided upon when I feel I have something in my army thats lacking battles or something I see for my army that someone else has modeled brilliantly. Monetarily I just wait till I can sell enough to cover my needs and with the extra go to the store to buy some more. I haven't bought anything in 6 months though :(

Work. Save money. When you have enough, buy what you want. If a really good deal shows up on eBay or a flea market, go for it. It's an expensive hobby, but if you're smart about it you can survive without dropping too much money everywhere. Use websites like Maelstromgames or Warstore to save 20%, or try your luck on eBay. I picked up $200+ of Tyranids for half that a few weeks back.

Ebay. 3 Obliterators for twenty bucks. All current MEQ Dexes (less blood angels) for fifty.
Seriously, ebay is the way to go. Problems only occur when items are listed as NIB and arrive assembled or, even worse, painted (I'm a purist about these things).

My problem stems when you get the model and it does not have the weapon (or attachement) you wanted glued or you glue it up and change your mind a month later - I refuse to break a model to re arm it. It is what makes me hate the WYSIWYG rule.

Just don't buy anything new except for Codexes (and only if you have too.) I've gotten 31 Kasrkin off of Ebay for $60 in the last couple of days. GW would've hit me for $150+ for all that...

I dont tend to But as my Mech Tau list is not in the slightest WYSIWYG it gets very very annoying. I did just get 2 battlesuits for £7.50 each (unmade and packaged) and a commander so hopefully that will bring it up to scratch a bit.

Well, it's either 40K or building another custom bike. Considering I've totaled the last 2 bikes and walked away with minor injuries, my wife and kids are all about me doing the 40K thing. Besides, after you total it all out, 40K is slightly cheaper than building the custom chopper....
On another note - $100 BUCKS FOR A LAND RAIDER!?!? Looks like me moving to AU and tattooing for a couple of years is OUT OF THE QUESTION!!! Unless I get to charge like $250/hour over there, which I don't see happening.......
