It's not about how simple it is to paint, but if you like the look of it. Because in the end you will probably have to do it a fair few times and see it everytime you use the models.

Once you find a scheme you like then you can find easy ways to paint it until you get better and want to improve.

The codex has a few in it, but really you can just make your own. Usually a single colour with some spot colour is the easiest to do.

Pretty much start with your favorite colour and work from there.

Thats a running joke on some forums but yes, thinning is an excellent technique. You could even take really think dollar store paint and thin it down to a level where you couldnt really tell if it wasnt citadel

Which is what I'm doing and works wonders for me! The secret is just putting some paint on the table and adding water to it.

You could look into dipping. You wont win any awards with it that way, but it still looks pretty nice when finished. Not to mention all it is is block colors and then a dip. Presto your done.

I come with good news, albeit late news but it is here none the less http://warhammer-tau-army.blogspot.com/search/label/painting .
Advice on picking colors, painting converting and even tactics *GASP!* you could write a book with all that information!

I'm not too fond of the green & black myself, i would have gone for a more earthy scheme with dusty greens and browns.

There may be a good reason for that...

I'm mostly teasing, but I would tone the green down a bit from that shown, even if it's just a matter of a wash afterwards.

The other thing is that the kind of green shown tends to lack opacity, which may be a problem over a black primer. If you're going to lay on a coat of one of the Foundation greens first, that'll help, but then again you did say you wanted a simple job.

Why not go with a more "military" green with grey instead of black?

I've found using some kind of palette (not the GW one - I bought one twice the size for 5% of the cost from a craft store next door to GW) helps. If you just mix on a flat surface like a table, it dries really quickly. Having a palette with small pools make the paint stay liquid longer, because it takes the pool longer to dry.

Infinitely better, at least in my opinion (I don't really do humble).

I think brownish red would be better than black, for the cloth.

If you're new to painting, it's worth thinking about crevasses, shading, and the order in which you'll paint these. The idea is to limit the amount of mistakes you can make at each stage.

My green is a bit brighter than yours, but the purpose of the picture is the choice of which bit to paint first. One of the more difficult things to paint will be the soft clothing, as this is in recesses, so until your brush control gets better you could find that you make a lot of mistakes. I'd therefore choose these areas to be the primer colour. Entirely black has little depth, I'd try drybrushing it with something like Adeptus Battlegrey, a really simple technique to learn and one that will add a lot of depth to the clothing. The advantage is that yuo can be really messy with the drybrushing as you'll paint all the green (raised) areas afterwards.

I'd then use of of the foundation paints, maybe Orkhide Shade, to neatly paint the green armour areas, then highlight the raised areas of the green with a ruglar green paint of your choice.

So

Prime black
Drybrush all cloth with dark grey (doesn't matter if you get it over the armour)
Paint the armour dark green
Highlight regular green

After that, you have a simple and strong base coloured army, and you can choose how much detail work you want to do as you get better - lenses, additional green/grey highlights, sept markings etc...

EDIT - gah, so my pic doesn't work. Basically, it was dark grey cloth, hands, and green armour. Gun in a combination of the same dark grey for the barrel/casing, and a lighter grey for the handle so that it stands out from the hands.

A yellow would seem to be a good contrast, or maybe mithril silver with a wash?

Nah if think it looks fine the way it is
It looks simple enough to paint. Prime black, then Dark Angels Green. Prehaps a tiny thin drybrush of Snot Green then wash Thraka Green if you want to get fancy. But several thin coats of Dark Angels Green would be fine.

As for the red you will need to build it up instead of putting it flat onto the black otherwise it will be too thick. I build up my reds and pinks from a black prime by going with a few coats of Scab Red (no foundations when I started ) then drybrush several thin coats of Blood Red over it giving me control over shading and the final tone of it.

To keep it simple for you, use the foundation red you might need another for the eyes to make them glow a bit more if you want (Blood Red) but the foundation will probably do the job.

Was only referring to eyes or, technically, lenses.

ahur hur.

Gambit, I like your scheme a lot.
The Tau are usually such a grumpy and drab lot so good on you for bringing the fun.
Red on green never disappoints imo.

Ignore all that. I know nothing.

I actually really like the crazy green scheme!

Makes a welcome change from the usual stuff, though it might look a bit OTT when theres loads of the buggers lined up on the table.

I liked the brighter green more, and forget the haters. It's bold, it's different, and it screams "I not afraid of anything".
