enough of that. need some help.
Thats the colour scheme i have in mind!
and this is the man i have at the moment (as a Chapter Master)
(its a Sanguinary Guard, who cares )

What are the colours? Are they as they come or do they represent other colours? ie the orange being gold and the grey being boltgun metal.

I don't get it. One member of the chapter survives, sure. So he becomes a blood angel? Does he stay with the death watch? Is your army 1 guy?

I think the OP is just stating that this is something that has happened to the Chapter in the fluff, it could well be that the sole survivor petitioned for a new chapter to be created it could be that the Name was carried over by a successor chapter in honour of their parent chapter, the army could represent a time before this calamity happened, you get the point. As for he became a BA, again the blood drop could represent anything, present day we are one world and I could think of at least ten things symbolised by similar imagery, times that by the billion world the make up the imperium of man and I think it really isnt such a big issue that the blood drops are there. I think you are right to ask though, OP you need to give us a little bit more explanation of the fluff, I think a few of us are intrigued by what the army's theme will be.

a Chapter in recovery.
One man left, and seeming as these are space marines, he told the deathwatch to go away, so he could re-build his chapter, serving as the chapter master. the Inquisition let him.
and the Orangey bits are 'Brazen Brass' and the body black drybrushed botlgun metal.
green Blood drops. or Blue, not sure yet yet. Green i think, to symbolise the necrons.

I like the background idea but agree that the BA iconography needs to be removed.
The wings are a great symbol of ascention / resurrection like a phoenix.
I like the base colors but was wondering if you might want to consider incorporating some brighter "flame" (reds and yellows) onto the extremeties and the wings to give the ashen grey body core rising like a phoenix ?
Just a thought ... have fun with whatever you do ... that's what this little hobby of ours is all about !!

I'm sorry, but your background doesn't work in 40k at all. It conflicts with everything, it's completely pants on head. You might as well say that your chapter was rebuilt by the chaos ork necrons to fight for the Tau, it's that off base. The Crimson Fists were almost disbanded because they had only 100 marines left. It is straight up impossible for a chapter to recover from 1 member, not to mention it'd be a shame if the tragic/heroic tale of the Astral Knights was ruined by some guy saying "but oh wait just kidding there was one guy left and he was also the master apothecary serving with the death watch and he was also the master of recruits and could pilot the battle barge and oversee recruiting by himself and he spent 1001 years rebuilding the chapter and now the chapter exists again : D : D" Just... no The only time iirc a SM chapter was "remade" is when the chapter number of an annihilated chapter was reused with a new chapter and new name, and I can't even remember when that happened. Why would your chapter be so much specialier than every other chapter and example in existence?

I think you're being overcritical ph34r, sure it's unlikely, but a guy can paint his toy soldiers any which way he wants, and give them a heroic story like that. Who's to say it couldn't happen? So what if it's not been written about yet/at all.
I urge you to watch the Six Million Dollar..er.. Marine.
A marine barely alive. Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Space_Marine_Chapters
they were the ones wiped out by the world engine, right? if you're planning on having that single marine reconstitute the ENTIRE chapter, then prepare for him to be tortured for at least a dozen years stuck in a giant test tube as his progenoid organs are constantly regrown and extracted. and then tortured again for another dozen years as he single handedly trains the largest EVER scout squad of noobs (who apparently will be chosen by his long lost uncle for the process of implantation???). he'll also outfit them in the finest wargear that the adeptus walmartus will offer on the black market like second hand lasguns since the vast majority of his chapter's wargear was lost in the same battle as the battlebrothers.
listen, you have every right to make up whatever fluff you want. you can have them be remade as an entire chapter of female spess marineez with the bestest stuff EVAR and a new chapter symbol incorporating the magic 8 ball psychic device... that doesn't mean that what you're proposing has any relationship to established fluff/background. ph34r is right.. what you're proposing is COMPLETELY 100% against everything that has been written about the establishment/reconstitution/survival/maintence of a space marine chapter. feel free to use it; just don't try to pass it off as remotely close to what GW has written because its not.

Cool fluff. I like it.
Maybe due to the immense sacrifice the Astral Knights made, the High Lords of Terra (or some other Ecclesiarchical high-ranking society) deemed it worthy to bestow adequate resources from the Adeptus Mechanicus along with geneseed tythes from relevant chapters and any extra manpower from across the Imperium to help rebuild the chapter. The last survivor of the previous chapter being immediately promoted to Chapter Master in honour of his fallen battle brothers.
Seems pretty cool to me. Heroic, kinda-silly, epicsauce. Everything a homebrew chapter needs really! I say run with it and ignore the naysayers. It's your hobby.
Are the brassy bits relevant? Are the brassy fists in memoriam of that fateful battle? That might be cool. Although I feel the brassy outlets on the backpack are distracting. Just the fists and the Aquila would be awesome. I like the idea of green blood-drops too. Keep up the good work buddy.

Yeah. They're a really cool chapter, sacrificing themselves to take out a huge Necron world engine. They were completely annihilated, the fluff says so. It is impossible to recreate a chapter from less than at the very least dozens of marines. If you want to make the Astral Knights less cool by totally erasing the epicness of their sacrifice, and break all the established background regarding rebuilding chapters, its not like I can come through the internet and stop you.
Why not just make the Astral Knights from before they were wiped out?

Well, I agree with ph34r that rebuilding your Chapter from 1 marine sounds kinda silly.
In my version of this story, the Astal Knights 6th company along with the auxiliaries and scout companies were stranded in the warp and never made it to the battle with the World Engine. Then, after the battle was already decided and it seemed the fate of the Knights was sealed, Captain Notker von Weyrach arrived with reinforcements no longer needed.
With backing up from Marneus Calgar, as a kind of recognition of the deed of the Knights. von Weyrach got a green light to try and rebuild the Chapter - he got promoted to Ch Master, his best sergeant Alkius Maximus to Captain of the 2nd, Master of the Watch, and all present and able scout marines got promoted to the rank of battle brothers. Basically, everything went up a notch, and the Chapter's history explains the little amount of heavy weaponry that they deploy.
That is the story of my homewbrew Astral Knights successor chapter, and I think that while still epic it is more plausible.

I think you have a good thing going with the fluff and the army ideas. One thing that I thought of was go with the blue over the green for the drop. Make it a tear drop in rememberance and respect for the lost battle brothers.
Also, just because one or two people on the internet who have their own opinions and think that your fluff doesnt make sense, doesnt mean they are right. It just means that they dont like your fluff, thats it. Take what you were thinking and roll with it.
I like Tek's answer from up a ways: "Maybe due to the immense sacrifice the Astral Knights made, the High Lords of Terra (or some other Ecclesiarchical high-ranking society) deemed it worthy to bestow adequate resources from the Adeptus Mechanicus along with geneseed tythes from relevant chapters and any extra manpower from across the Imperium to help rebuild the chapter. +1. maybe he's such a charismatic leader that he was able to recruit 10 pals from the deathwatch to help him rebuild the chapter. the nice thing about fantasy is you can make up pretty much any damn thing you want. maybe every time you field a force, you're fielding EVERY MODEL in the chapter, so it's a life or death battle for them to recover some chapter artifacts or something. the hell with nay-sayers. it's your chapter, the fluff can read whatever you want it to.
the model looks great.

You don't need to bring back dead chapters to play them. People don't bring back Horus Heresy legions to current time to play them, and some of the Special Characters are dead. Heck, some people play pre-Badab War Astral Claws and Fire Falcons before they were LotD. 40k has a big time line, so don't feel as if you can only stick to current day to be relevant.
As for the dude, I think he looks too much like a black Sanguinary Guard. You could also try toning the grey down a bit. Maybe a badab black wash or something.
Coincidently, his scheme kinda reminds me of the Sable Swords, the chapter that got the Astral Knight's fortress monastery after the chapter was destroyed.
