Subject: Q&A with GW custserv

I spent an hour on the phone with a nice chap at GW US Customer Service today asking a variety of questions that have come up from my play as well as my friends that play, and I figured I would share the results with all the fine folks here at DakkaDakka. I was also told that it is possible that these could end up in future FAQ publications from GW.
Enjoy
Q: Is there a place I can get a list of models and what size base they
should be using? I would like to know as apparently models have
changed since I started collecting, like the Great Eagle and Tyrion.
A: There is no list, but you can call in or email about specific models
to find out the correct size.
Q: In the case of a Character riding a Monster, can the Monster be
affected by a spell that targets a character (such as The Savage Beast
of Horros or Steed of Shadows)? As I understand it these spells when
cast do not affect both the Character and the Monster in the model
with one casting, however as I interpret the Ridden Monsters rules on
pg 105 of the small rulebook, the entire model is treated as having
the Character and Monster troop type, thus possibly making the Ridden
Monster a valid target? Also, is the situation changed in the
situation of Lords with "named" mounts, ie Eltharion on Stormwing?
A: According to the rules as written yes the Monster can be affected
by character specific spells, however the rules as intended should not
allow this.
Q: In regards to Vampire Counts, are models recovered from the Blood
Drinker able to attack in the same close combat they were
"resurrected" in? Also, if all of the non-character models in the unit
are slain in close combat before the Vampire with Blood Drinker gets
to attack does the Vampire still get to "resurrect" the slain
non-character models?
A: According to the rules as written yes, they do get to attack, however
the rules as intended should not allow this. The Vampire DOES NOT get
to resurrect the slain non-character models if all of them are slain before
he gets to attack tho, as he is a lone character at that point, not part of
the unit.
Q: Does the Vampire Count spell Vanhel's Danse Macabre give Always
Strikes First if the unit was not in Close Combat before the spell was
cast on them?
A: A unit does not get to move and gain ASF on one casting of the spell,
however, the spell can be cast multiple times on the same unit to gain
each effect once.
Q: Does a unit standing in a Necrotic Ooze gain Poisoned Attacks in
multiple turns if it remains standing in the Ooze?
A: According to the rules as written no, however, the rules as intended
likely should allow this. Logically it makes sense to allow it.
Q: Does the High Elf ability Valour of Ages allow a High Elf unit to
reroll Break Tests from losing Close Combat against Dark Elves? and if
Yes, what about situations where the High Elf unit loses a combat
against a Dark Elf unit and a unit from another army list both
attacking in the same Close Combat?
A: No, Break tests are not Psychology tests thus there is no reroll,
however Psychology tests such as Fear do allow for a reroll in both
cases listed above.
Q: Can a unit already affected by an augment spell have the same
augment spell cast on them again in the same turn, from multiple
sources of course, AND have the benefits of the spell stack? What
about Remains in Play spells cast in a later turn on a unit already
affected by it, still from a different wizard tho?
A: Yes to both, as long as the spell is cast from different wizards.
Q: Not sure how to word this question, so I'll explain the situation.
A unit assaults a garrisoned building, the close combat results in a
true tie (multiple musicians), thus the assault continues in the next
round. In the next round a unit charges the flank of the assaulting
unit, in this close combat the assaulting unit loses combat. What
happens? The assaulting unit is supposed to be "nudged" back 1", but
is that still the case since the combat was joined by another unit?
A: Yes, the assaulting unit is moved 1" away from the building, but
leave the flanking unit in close combat, nudging them as well if
necessary.
Q: Do units (friend or foe) block line of sight required by ranged
attacks, including siege engines, or can the attacks still happen
albeit with the Hard Cover modifier? Does this situation change for
siege engines that do not require ballistic skill, such as cannons?
A: No to all cases, units do NOT block line of sight required by
ranged attacks or those from siege engines.
Q: Are Elf Bolt Throwers intended to only have two "wounds" in the
current ruleset, as they only have 2 crew members?
A: No, they should require three wounds to be killed, you should
place a third crewman with the model when fielding them.
Q: Do Ridden Monsters or Monsters with handlers (ie. Dark Elf Hydra)
benefit from the Lone Models and Movement rules on pg 27 of the small
rulebook?
A: Yes, they can move as a Lone Model even tho they have crew and/or
riders.
Q: If a character is in the front rank of a unit that gets charged,
can he move to the back rank before close combat in order to avoid
getting attacked?
A: No, Make Way! does not allow a character to escape being in base
to base contact by moving to another rank.

Nice of you to share, but keep in mind that these are not official answers and GW Customer Service lines are well known for their inconsistent answers.

Call them again and ask the same questions. I'm certain at least one would get a different answer.

I'm honestly upset about the answer of that one...

My jaw dropped a bit at that one ... Would like to note that my skaven war machines have 4 wounds on their profile but only 3 crew, so can I have an extra wound/dude too? Pretty please?

Buildings that, you know, have no holes in them, or in case of units of low stature you can hide behind a big hill.
The thing with TLoS is that it does what it says on the package

Eh?
Thought the rules were clear enough as they were. How on earth did they get here?
Out of interest, I'd assumed that adding an engineer gave a dwarf war machine a fourth wound. Any thoughts on this?

Yes it does, as the number of crew denotes the number of wounds.
As above. GW are *awful* with rules questions.

Because you're not getting an "official" answer. You're getting that particular CSR's interpretation of a rule.
Just like here, with the RAW and RAI crowds.

Don't sweat it, miko. A lot of folks do this at some point. It's the internet warriors (i.e. those of us that spend *far* too much time on forums such as this) that are particularly bent out of shape about the inconsistent rulings from the phone service. None of this hostility is directed at you. At least it shouldn't be. You've just stumbled upon a favorite dead horse that the internet likes to beat on.

A freind once called GW three times and asked the same question each time. He got three different answers.
It was a yes/no question...

One of the times the answer was the slash between the yes and no?
