OK, before I script this attempt at a tourney army list, I would like to say in my defence that I have had no previous knowledge of tournoment forces and indeed do not know fully how they differ from standard armies. With that in mind, I would welcome, and indeed ask for, any constructive criticism and help that anyone can offer me. Many thanks.

Thanks and God bless,

First of all, I think you mean "Combi-Melta" where you have"Multi-Melta" listed for your Tactical Squads. Multi-Meltas are heavy weapons, and since you have a Missile Launcher in each squad you cannot take a Multi-Melta as well. It would also fit with the points

Aside from that typo, the list looks like a fine start, but I think you would be better served with a pair of Vindicators in place of those Typhoons. I've recommended this option several times before and people seem to like it quite a bit.

Vindicators are big, scary targets, much like the Land Raider with the Assault Terminators, and as such they draw fire from the Land Raider, or at least force your opponent to focus on one thing or risk having all of them come down on him. Hard. This also has the makings of a strong Vulkan list, but if you prefer to not use special characters I would recommend a Librarian with Terminator Armor and Storm Shield as your HQ. Give him The Avenger and Null Zone, and those Assault Terminators will be able to handle just about anything.

Here are a couple of examples for you:

Vulkan - 190
5 Assault Terminators (5x TH/SS) - 200
10 Tactical Marines (Missile Launcher, Meltagun, Rhino) - 210
10 Tactical Marines (Missile Launcher, Meltagun, Rhino) - 210
10 Tactical Marines (Missile Launcher, Meltagun, Rhino) - 210
Land Raider Redeemer (Multi-Melta) - 250
Vindicator - 115
Vindicator - 115
Total 1,500

Librarian (Terminator Armor/Storm Shield, The Avenger, Null Zone) - 140
5 Assault Terminators (5x TH/SS) - 200
10 Tactical Marines (Missile Launcher, Meltagun, Combi-Melta, Rhino) - 220
10 Tactical Marines (Missile Launcher, Meltagun, Combi-Melta, Rhino) - 220
10 Tactical Marines (Missile Launcher, Meltagun, Meltabombs, Rhino) - 215
Land Raider (Multi-Melta, Extra Armor) - 275
Vindicator - 115
Vindicator - 115
Total 1,500

Both lists are pretty standard when it comes to tournament quality lists, and both have their merits. Vulkan's list gains Master Crafted Thunder Hammers for all of the Assault Terminators, and all of your Meltaguns and Multi-Meltas become Twin Linked (Flamers and Heavy Flamers too, but the list doesn't have any of those). In the other list, the Librarian can force opponents to re-roll invulnerable saves, or fire an AP3 Heavy Flamer to thin the herd before the unit assaults. You could take a Godhammer or a Crusader in the Vulkan list without the Multi-Melta for the same points but I think the Redeemer works well with Assault Terminators.

If you like the Vulkan list but wish to field him in a different chapter you can most certainly use him as a "counts as Vulkan" character, but I would make sure to convert a WYSIWYG model for him and perhaps come up with some back story. Most opponents have no issue with this, but some people like the player to justify it somehow

Either way, this is just my opinion, and you can use anything you like and throw out anything you don't, but I do strongly recommend pairing those Vindicators up with your Land Raider/Assault Terminators, but be careful where you shoot with them!

Hope that helps.

Agreed. If you are going to field a Land Raider, you can make it scarier even without using it to puke out your terminators. With a Null Zone, and possibly a Psychic Hood, you can move your Land Raider to the middle of the board and command a serious presence, almost forcing your opponent to waste shots on the Land Raider instead of your softer targets in the Rhinos. I also fully agree with the demolisher-cannon wielding vindicators. Pie plates can scare many players, and these give you a needed advantage against swarm/horde lists that seem to be everywhere these days.

I also recommend taking Extra Armor and Smoke Launchers with your vehicles; they don't seem important until you need them most, but then again I might just be spoiled because I play Black Templar and all of that stuff is cheaper for me.

Best of luck, and hope I helped.

the previous posts gave good advice...but there is alot to do in making a tournament list.

first off...figure out what you wanna do with your list. in playing marines this is fairly easy and special characters can help with this, as was listed by Aldarionn, vulcan is the best way to go here as he can pretty much boost your entire army with re-rolls of one form or another. and the vulcan list he gave is a good one as well. the list provided has alot of synergy to it, as it can deal with both heavy armor and infantry units. also doing extensive research on your codex works wonders in prepping for army creation

here is a list that ive used quite successfully since the marine dex was released:

vulcan

5x th/ss termies
land raider redeemer
-multi-melta

2x tacticals
-flamer
-multi-melta
-pf sgt
-rhino

2x mm/hf speeders

2x vindicators

anyway once you have your list the next thing is to heavily playtest your list to work out kinks and see how you do on various missions, but i do suggest you try to do both objective and non objective missions. and the last thing to remember is that what works for others might not work for you, which is why playtesting is very important in making a tournament worthy list.

NOTE: lastly im not saying your list rocks or sux, but am just offering advice based on what ive learned

Hey JD, how goes it down south?

Is this part of that list I wrote you some time ago?

Its going fine thanks dude, the pace is picking up which is why I have been so long in replying to this thread. It is indeed part of the list, which has by the way worked rather well .

Thanks guys, thats really helpful. I like the look of Vulkan and will probably try the redeemer to see how it handles. My only concern would be the loss of long range fire power which comes with the Godhammer Land Raider, but then again as the termies will want to be jumping into wombat asap a pair of s6 ap3 templates may be rather helpful. I think that I may run the following list first to test it out then proxy up the land raider to test out a redeemer.

Vulkan
190pts

5 Assault Terminators
Thunder Hammers,
Storm Shields,
200pts

10 Tactical Marines
Missile Launcher,
Meltagun,
Rhino,
210pts

10 Tactical Marines
Missile Launcher,
Meltagun,
Rhino,
210pts

10 Tactical Marines
Missile Launcher,
Meltagun,
Rhino,
210pts

Land Raider
250pts

Vindicator
115pts

Vindicator
115pts

Total
1500pts

Vulkan would be a benefit for the Terminators allowing re-roll to hit, however you don't have that much meltas or flamers to reap the benefits of him fully. So, I say stick to the Chaplain.

Switch the Redeemer to a Crusader. I've used a Redeemer and you have to get really close to use it, even with the sponsons towards the front the templates still have to go past the Raider 2" to reach the enemy in front. Crusader with multi melta is the way forward, with that move " and you fire all weapons, unlike the Redeemer

Dual Vindicators are nice and add some support for the Rhinos but with the Typhoons you're getting plenty of missile shots, drop them you get 3. I would get the Typhoons for the long range and then add Vindicators to 2,000 points level

Any spare points you could add hunter killers for one shot long range, torrent the same target with them until gone
