I just take a washer and glue it to the bottom of the base. Gives it some nice weight and it is extremely fast and simple. However, it gives a little bit of extra height to your model so you might find some of your models won't benefit from cover like they should. Although, the only time I have ever seen it as a problem is with GW's craters.

Your way if much nicer as it preserves the correct height of the model while still adding some weight. Albeit, you could blow your head off on accident...
