I'm fairly new to the 40k universe. I got intrested from dawn of war pc game and eventually got intrested in playing the tabletop game.

Anyways I naturally got intrested in the background and I'm wondering if the story advances? I've read how the golden throne is broke/breaking and how there not enough forces to defend the Imperium. I'm just curious if the gamesworkshop continues the story or this is how its been since they came up with it.

they have campaigns once and a while which seem more like a new subplot then any huge new story advances, but i've only been playing for 6 years, and the first 3 of those years were for fantasy, so i'm kinda a youngun. haha

The story has advanced a bit, mostly new races appearing and/or becoming more prevalent. Other than that not much. They really can't because the fate of the galaxy is basically at a deciding point and GW doesn't want to bother people with their race losing.

Also It would be hard for people to get into if it was constantly changing.

Finally, you have a good ten thousand years of mostly unrecorded events to fill in yourself. Don't worry about advancing plot.

i would like some sort of advancing plot myself even if it was just some crazy stuff goes down (new chaos leader or something) and at the end things were the same as they started

It seems more of fleshing the current time-line and recent history out. Rather than advancing it.

I've been playing since the first edition of 40K and I have to say... the background hasn't advanced all that much; it's mostly fleshing out the 10,000 years from the Horus Heresy onwards. Each edition comes with masses of rumours about how the Golden throne has failed and the Imperium has collapsed, but they never come to fruition.

The main changes have been to introduce new races (Tau, Dark Eldar, Necrons), removing old races that they don't want any more (Squats) or expanding the influence of a race (Tyranids). In general though, things seem to be stuck.

What would be nice is if Forgeworld were allowed to evolve the plot in a similar way to the new Warhammer Forge books; leading to the end of everything as we know it.

Ok I thought the plot didn't really advance but wasn't sure. I have the newest rulebok an IG codex an they confused m because n the rulebook it talks about how the Imperium is falling and there are no more reinforments to send and then the IG codex talks about how manpower is nearly inexhaustible fr the IG.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

They simply fill out the current plot. and with a galaxy to fill they really have a bottomless pit to fill.

they could advance the plot, but likely won't because it could create more problems then it would solve.

the only possable way they could advance the plot without wreaking the Grimdarkonlywarforeternity thing they have going on is this.

Emperor is reborn as the Starchild, IoM is split by a Civil war(with some High Lords not beliving he was reborn) reintroducing the LatD Codex, Abbadon launchers the 14th Black Crusade to stop the Emperor, necrons awaken more, Tyranids stay pretty much the same or get their butts kicked by the Emperor, but are firmly entrenched as a force in the galaxy(much like the Orks), Orks have a big Waaagh , the Eldar stay pretty much the same, and the T'au either get eaten by nids or stay the same.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

...urrrr... I dunno

Well, in game terms, it's technically no longer the 41st millennium any more. We stepped over into the 42nd after the 13th Black Crusade, which has been referenced in various pieces of fluff, it's just that nothing much has happened in it yet.
So yeah, it does advance. Kinda.

40k is a SETTING, that means it is a static background for all your games that doesn't advance. Advancing it substantially would mean destroying the current status quo and equilibrium, therefore it is avoided. Otherwise you might lose whole playable armies and beloved characters, reducing the fun for games instead of enhancing it. Therefore no advancement of the story.

Kroothawk has it 100% correct. Having the Golden Throne break down in 40k would be like having the sun explode in How I Met Your Mother.

Or having the the mother sit down and tell him to just tell them how they met.

The problem is that if they advanced the plot to much and an army that people have spent hundreds of pounds each making gets removed, GW would seriously alot of people off and loss alot of customers

its safe to say that relictors are the greatest army a man , nay human can own.

I think what the writers are trying to say is that whilst the imperial guard has seemingly endless numbers, there isnt actually enough of them to defend the entire imperium.

Somewhere in south-central England.

The basic concept of the game is that the Empire of Man, the largest government in the galaxy, which rules a million worlds, and has literally countless population, resources, and armies, is trembling on the edge of extinction.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And it has been so for 10,000 years, since the great crusade, during which it came from the edge of extinction to recapture most of the galaxy, stalled in an failed palace coup.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
