Since pre-ordering the Tomb Stalker I've looked into some necessary steps to prepare come november when it's delivered. I watched the "how to pin" video but as he was working with a metal model it got me thinking what kind of glue is needed for resin models? Superglue *the stock I have now is Zapagap and Instant Krazy Glue* or some special kind of glue? Also I remember someone telling me I had to wash each of the parts off with soap and water, because of some coating. What coating?
Many thanks in advance as this is my first step outside my plastic/metal bubble.

You should wash the model in warm (not hot, as it will soften the resin) soapy water to remove the mould release agent (greasy), and you should also do this with your plastic and metal minis too. It will allow glue and paint to adhere properly to the mini.
And superglue is best for gluing resin btw.
Have fun!

Exactly what Orki says. Superglue's perfect for working with resin models. And brushing them down in warm water with a toothbrush gets rid of the nasty coating they spray the mould with so the resin doesn't stick to it during casting.

Also note that to get strong joins with resin, a quick filing of either side to be joined helps a lot!
I have a good hundred + FW models at home, and its little thing like this that help them look fantastic

Mould release serves two purposes.
Yes, it prevents the resin sticking to the rubber and tearing it when you remove the casts.
It's main purpose is as a barrier. Resin chemically interacts with the rubber (much like an acid and this piece of chalk. See, it does get in.) and this is what causes most of the damage over time and shortens mould life.
FW use a hydrocarbon based liquid release. It sticks to the resin better than babygak to a blanket and needs some (often) serious scrubbing to get it off.
Superglue is fine. For strength, I'd use epoxy (araldite), but for small parts (and it looks like the necropede has lots of them) superglue should be fine.

I owuld also have a brass wire brush at hand.
After washing & drying (naturally not by hairdryer or you'll warp the pieces), if they feel 'slimey' and are still very shiney then use the wire brush on them. Sound harsh but if you're careful the detail won't get damaged.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

dont forget to wear a mask when working with resin as resin dust is something you dont want in your lungs/eyes/mouth/nose.
or you can just keep it wet when working as the water will take care of the dust.
what you can do: take some of the resin that comes with the tomb stalker(theres a lot of resin that doesnt belong to the actually mini.always) and cut it,drill it... to get a feel for it.

The last resin piece I got I scrubbed like crazy. That stuff is such a pain to get off the model.
