My xbox got the red ring of death! (3 flashing lights) If the warranty is expired, will microsoft still repair it if you send it in or something? (My friend said he did something like that).

They'll repair it, but you will have to pay for it. When mine broke, it would have cost me £80 to have microsoft fix it; I got it fixed locally instead, faster, and for only £50.

I fix them constantly for RRoD.. 99% of the time I just have to put new thermo-grease on the processor. It's an easy fix but I would say get a refurb from gamestop since it's only $100.

AFAIK Microsoft will repair your Xbox 360 for FREE if it gets RROD.
Even if it is out of warranty
Give them a call and see what you can do

Yup, I second that...I'm on my fifth xbox now, and the first three had the ring of death. Microsoft repaired the first three, free of charge because they give you three years if its the red ring fault.
That being said, it can go red sometimes when its something else. On my last xbox that happened and I tried to send it back and they gave me some ridiculous quote just to check it out so I pulled off the hard drive and dropped the rest of my balcony to teach it a lesson!
Then I went and bought an arcade version, which was much cheaper and used my old hard drive.

They are actually a bunch of signals. The RRoD is actually the signal for generic hardware failure. Send it to them anyway to see what happens. As for buying second hand 360s, my friend got a few from the Gamestop equivilant here. He had to keep returning them because they would keep getting the RRoD. After he got through three the fourth finally worked. The point is that sometimes they just check if everything is in the box and not if it actually works. It's still a good idea, but don't be surprised if you have to go through a couple first. Also, if I remember correctly, after they repair it the warranty is increased by one year. When I had to get mine repaired we got a card for free Xbox Live gold with it, it was only a month but we got so many of the things from games and such that we basically had a free year.

I heard if you wrap your xbox in a couple of towels and leave it running for a while, literally overheating it, leave it for half an hour to cool off, then running it again will get it going for a while at least. Not a definate fix, but a temporary one at best.

It works sometimes(I would say maybe 30% of the time).. That is just the easiest solution.

As n0t_u has inferred, it doesn't mean that the hardware is irrevocably screwed so much as it has successfully produced a diagnostic error message that indicates a failure to POST (power-on self test) successfully. Anything from a faulty harddrive to a dud memory chip can induce this, and as an IT professional I can say with some authority that it's worth taking the HDD out, giving it (the case, not the HDD) a good thump, and then putting it back together again before you panic. It could be a burnt out mainboard requiring replacement but can also easily be a loosened component.

You can narrow down the problem by checking the secondary error code (I forget how to do this but it shouldn't be hard to find out)
