Hello dakkas,

today i want to show you some sideprojects of me, which are not really close to my main blogs.

so here i will post my random stuff.

first: terrain, creepy monolith

front^^

ugly backside^^

i tried to give it an eerie look by adding a green drybrush job around the mouth and tentacles...

the other project is something i want to try for my three young sons.
when i see my wild bunch i can imagine them running around a playground screaming and makeing loud noises like bumm bummm BOOOOOOOMMMMM...

that´s why i want to built for each of them a lifesize version of our all time favorite weapon, the bolter.
my first attempt is for my oldst son, aged nearly 10, and i went the miles to do my first steps in wood.
three layers of wood thickness of 1cm~

for now as seen in the pic these layers were hold together by a screw. i think i will glue the monster together and add details as i go along.

enjoy^^

comments and critizism are needed. the bolter is in it´s early stage so very wip and will get plenty of love from my as you can expect^^^

cheers mates, vik

This isn't what I expected, where is the creepy bolter and the life-size monolith?

Like the wierd 'I'm growing out of a rock' thing, and a good start on the bolter!

thanks mate, sorry must have been my fault.
the monolith is actually about 3 meters. took me about three years to hack and nibble the dents out with teeth and a dull spoon...
the bolter is actually a clever use of washes and some rather heavy drybrushing of a fw bolter^^. i didn´t file down the mold lines as one can see...

cheers mate^^ like some fun^^

lol this is fantastic suprise , at last the artisan and enginseer emerges!

what can i say you have been a busy one ! sorry i never go around to suppling them templates , i took plent of shots but the tape measure cant be seen in the pics doh!
the bolter looks great, much better than mine iam sure you oldest will love it . mine belongs to the youngest. dont forget to put his intials in a secret code on it somewhere, so his brothers can;t claim it for themselves really looking forward to seeing your progress on this.

and as for the mouth , well it looks like it should be on the front cover of a heavy metal album , or in the warp. i love it.
also like your terrain, i can see in the background, is it black? but i thought your earth angels were on a sandy desert planet

you must be tired after all the work , keep it up mate , will check back soon.

the tierhill is an early work from me. i treied to do the eaysiest terrain possible. just pva glued some styrodor or pink foam together and cut it up. then i basecoated/ primed with cheap color for painting walls black. then heavy drybrush with skull white...end of story. this piece got another function nowadys as it is a centerpiece for my "whitebox" to make pictures of my creations to post here...

the monolith i got ratehr cheap of ebay. got it with a bunch of figs i don´t have ause for now, but they look nice. i craved that piece. it just called out to me^^

a really good idea to carve the name of my oldest son somewhere on the bolter...i certainly will do that... thats instant fluff that is^^.
the idea mainly got a run up as i got hold of a piece of toolery from the fleamarket last week that i can use with a small handheld Fret saw into a table Fret saw...thus making it able for me an my two left thumbs to get a nice straight cut in harder materials... finally^^
don´t be sorry for not getting to do templates for me. your times by far more needed on the drawingboard ^^ as we all await the ARRIVAL, yeah that had to finally be written in caps^^

as for the monolith... when something is to your liking the mind goes in all dirctions creative wise. so now i´ve begun a hunt for skulls to litter the needed base for this moster of a stone... i imagine it sitting above a littered hill of skulls. but you no the drill. ebay wont chuck me the needed skulls for nothing, and to pay more is not an option...what can one man do...i wanted to get a hold on the old fatasy skeleton warrios, but boy are the ever so expensive...would be fun with lying around skulls and limbs and than then smacking and licking sound of the toungue and the tentacles...obisiously this will make a good objective marker or possibly a scerario item.

cheers mate, vik

^so did some sidestuff for my oldest son, he is nearly 10 years next month and i want him to get motivated to do his own army and that i´m not his brushslave anymore...

so i present the first camo presentation of his own army currently firms under the name iron templars:

sarge steel (couln´t keep meself off of naming him that way^^)

beside him stand a pillbox i made from foam to insulate pipes from a hardeware store and some plaster base freshly drybrushed after half a year lying around basecoated black^^
the base of said sarge i did in a new fashion, should look like snotty swamp but i guess i´ll have to refix that...

next one is a ccw spec fighter not named for now. he got two shoulderpads as a diverhelemt thingy i saw in another thread...and i couldn´t resist doing it on my own...

maybee i´ll make a whole squad of him for at least 5 guys. i have to try to do some scratch builts for jumppacks cause i don´t have them atm and my sons certainly will need them that way...

comments and critics will be shot....now are wellcome^^, cheers mates, vik

I was thinking about doing the shoulder-pad head thingy with the 2 CCW's... Might try it for my inquisitor's retinue...
Try putting some gloss over the "visor". that might work well.

problem is i don´t have gloss thought about that long but i took the wetblending route, which failed a bit...^^

but your right shrike^^

AND NOW TO SOMETHING COMPLETLY DIFFERENT:

Scatch building jumppacks for Spacemarines....and hopefully getting away with it

for my sons steel templars i need some assaulttroops with jumppacks but all jumppacks i had are now in my earthangels army...
so either buy some, nick some or scratchbuilt some.
beeing sometimes a bit of uncle scrooge one i had to do the scracthbuilding^^

so here is my attempt. used a CSM backpack, and then the following parts for each jumppack jet:

on the left you see a pearl made from plastic. normaly you use these to make things from lots of them and then heatglue them together with a hot iron...like hearts or christmas trees. someone done this in UK or US?
well on the right you see a salvaged LEGO part thats sligghtly conical.
i glued the lego directly to the outtakes of the backpack and then inserted the plastic pearl.
rest is history enjoy. and please tell me if you would accept this as a jumppack on the table.

thanks for stoping by, vik

you´ve got hundreds of yumpacks ore csm backpacks????
if the former than i would strongly suggest ebay to be your friend here^^ the will go out about 2,50 to 3 € per item...
if it is the later than i envy you still, cause i like this particular csm backpack the most. i´ve toyed with a steampunk vision concerning the iron templars...
because i will mostly use crusader figs for his army i think they would support the steampunk look really well.
and yeah your pics are really close on my model. how do you do that??? is that a magical power of yours using the web to perfectly mimic my models?? one has to wonder^^

I am like a visual savnte ;-) once i see a pic i never forget it . lol
more like i play too many video games and watch too may movies ! Steam punk templars , thats a good idea i alwas thought of templars as crusader knights, but adding a steampunk twist is original, the shield shoulder pads look good , i was thinking of adding shields to my tanks when i make them like viking longships. the chaos back packs look ver steampunk anyway, the lego bits is what i have dozens of , maybe hundreds was a bit of an exageration ;-) !

well when it comes to lego we play also in the big lleagues, cause we have millions, my wife often says our kids have to many so they don´t now waht to play with... it´s a state of mind blockade, when you have to many things you do nothing senseful, cause the time you choose is the time you cant play with something else. sometimes i want to cean up the room of my kids with a shovel....

as for the last fig. it had a kind of accident, got its left arm torn apart. now it has a boltgun. i didn´t want to much chainswords to spend on too less marines, so now the torn arm will be transplanted to an other one...^^

and since i joined dakka i´ve come to love steampunk. it looks so, don´t know, something just takes it´s slot in my mind and stays there...it´s an alien concept but such a bello gusto one^^

and i humbly bow for your visual memory^^

Hello Dakka,

so of today i changed the blogname to

The Iron Templars on customized lavabases...

and to get in the midst of it i will present to you my home made lava bases.

sorry didn´t do any wip pics, lazyness and my children had been hopping al around the place so there was little time for making worthwhile pics.

the finished ones i did photograph today so here they are.

it wasn´t easy for me to get a grip on my ideas to get on the bases for me...
i had a small research done beforehand but i guess as my first basedesign for real they lived not exactly up to my imagination...

please feel free to give advice and critizism ...

thanks a heap. man that will come in very handy as i have to probably do a table in the near future too. i tried to make the lava glowy bu my wife said i should add more red to make it more lavalike as she saw fit... well husband and wife have some creative differencies here i guess...^^
maybee i´ll add some yellow ink in layers to it. and the next i will try to do in memory of these tuts.
believe me i searched exactly for something like taht but on dakka i didn´t find it.
your research skills are also superb.
but i have to admit, ols is waaaay over my head...sometimes even drybrushing seems to test my abilities...

and if i ever went for CSM i probably would go totally khorn as well. the rule!
thanks a lot man, vik

man i´ve read just now the tutorial on building a lava board. and its like my whole life instead of choosing in a 50:50 chance the right way i end up doing it the oposite. instead by going to bascoat the lava yellow and then adding layers of red by drybrushing i gone for red basecoat and drybrushed yellow... the tutorial way is way simpler and also looks more logic and with grinded teeth looks way better...AAAAAARGHHHH

thanks man again...

Vik, those bases are cool ... in a hot kinda of a way!

As my blog suggests i'm still a noob at this painting and modelling malarky so I hope you don't mind a few nooby questions.

1)How did you make those bases?
2)How are you going to attach the mini to the base?
3)Do you mind if I ask more questions once you've answered 1&2?

hey man feel free to ask what you want to get answered^^
cool avatar by the way looks like magnet letters for me^^

as for your questions:
1.: i used normal GW bases, the infantry ones, then i added pva glue to make it sticky. after that on the still wet glue i put a fair amount of modeling clay on it. it´s something you will get everywhere.
after aplying the clay to the glued base i then modeled some creaks or something to represent the lava and also something of a rocky surface with selfmade tools. like you do when working with gs is think...also used some dentist tools^^.
it sets really hard and i cant tell you for sure how durable it will be, i´m aslo in my try end error pahse here...
the clay sets /cures on air so it is relativly easy to use. after about one day, in which i often checked (cause i might be lazy but not patient) it was hard enough to paint.

as for painting...well basecoat rocky parts black, lava parts i did red, which you shouldn t do take yellow first. then i washed the whole base with badablack to get the base not so flat looking...then i drybrushed with orange then yellow...sometime i washed the lava with yellow ink and then with diluted blood red. really i was trying out all tricks i could muster up^^.

the rocky bits i drybrushed with a cheap grey color ...
well rest is history^^

now to question 2:

i probably should use pinning to attach the models. the bases are modeled very uneven so this would be the right way... instead i today superglued the ready models on the base...
for now it works. i read in other threads that a glue called liquide nails might also give good results... well really up to you what you do as long as it does the job.
i guess in the long run i will do the pinning when the first mninis fall off...

and if you have any further question don´t hesitate to fire them right away, after all this is for me a part of doing a blog. cant have them blokes all the time praise my work here^^

well actually i like that too^^...

cheers mate, vik

Hey Vik, I knew you'd answer quickly.

I've not used GS before or any type of modelling clay, but like they say no guts no glory! I bought a single inch of GS when I bought some new paints and i've been looking for a good excuse to try it and a lava base looks like a good excuse to me!

So onto the pinning. I've not found a tut on how to do it. I get the general idea, drill a hole into the feet, glue a pin into the hole and stick in base.

So here's some more questions...

1) How do you cut off the rectangle that's attached to the feet of the mini (base slot???) It's quite thick so I imagine it takes some effort.

2) How do you drill a hole into the feet? Use something like this? http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/Privateer-Press/Paints-and-Tools/FP3-Modeling-Drill-and-Pinning-Set/prod_3850.html

3) When drilling (if that's what you do) how do you make sure you don't just drill though the foot and actually drill up into the leg?

4) Also when drilling, i imagine you have to apply quite a bit of pressue, especially to metal minis. Doesn't the drill just slip off the base of the foot and implant into you hand, or worse still scrapping the paint off your mini.

Sorry for all the Q's i've only stuck to painting so far no conversions or cool bases ..... yet

BTW the Avatar is only temporary and you're correct it is fridge magnets, the next one is going to be made of spahetti letters - oh yeah!

praise the spagehtti god...

i´m only a short time on so next q session only after my children are in bed^^
first one thing find plaster or that modeling clay. its way cheaper to use. you will get it in certain gift shops...or crativity shops...
well all will be different in GB i suppose...
but you will buy it for about a 4 €s and not through your nose from GW or the likes...
definatly dont use GS for bases as long as your not a millionar for the i charge you for further questions^^ lol

as for your questions:
i use for cutting some pliers, the sharp ones. although GW sell them you can certainly buy a ton of them for the same money in a hardware store...
then i shave with an exactoknife the rest of the parts of that are not needed...

as for the drilling... well as i´m lazy i dont want to do that... but i have done so and when i drill you should use a pinvice... also i use a small akku handdrill... dremel would do also... or something like you posted.

and when i drill what to do for not drilling through? well, PRAY LIKE HELL... and dont try to bite your toungue off...^^

i think to make it work you need pressure but first you have to have a small indent... like stick a needle in or soemthing that is tiny enough. only a small indent and then the drill has something to work in and weont drive away... and one things for sure by all you do:

SAFTY FIRST

.. saw once a guy drilling his hand with a wooddrill... messy is the least what i can say to this...

if you want at first some eays bases why not use sandingpaper or cork to use as basing material... no really try to imagine what cheap materials you have in your household and what they might look when painted. there are so many uses of other things not tabletop related... i want to use tea for instance next...^^ as leafs...

ok man off for now... will be on in some two or three hours for further q´s and a´s.

he (my son) aproved of them as they are for him "cool".

Does Dakka ahve also something to add to these first glimps of a raging army?

as mentioned before the models will be mostly space crusaders but here and there some modern SM will be added to the mix.
in fact i will build a captain from the AOBR set to give these soldiers their rightful HQ.

Nice work with these . you paint fast! the colour scheme is perfect!, and bases really make em stand out! I notice you have the lascannon from space crusade addon , I allways wanted that addon , is it eldar, or dreadnought? , looks great your boy should be very happy, but i guess , he will have to wait if your on your next big project! ;-)

well it is a rather easy paintscheme...just a drybrush with metall and then some details...in fact it is so easy it, i feel like a criminal...^^

and the next project has some very important and nice looking pieces gained, as i had today visited a hardwareshop and made some treasure hunting there...

for scratchbuilders i recommend to visit your sockets range in the electro department at the hardwarestore...oh the pieces you can obtain there...

Good work Vik, you sure do paint quick, i've not had much opportunity to paint recently, hopefully this weekend.

I ordered a dremel - then realised it doesn't come with drill bits - doh!

In answer to Neil's question the las cannon came from the dreadnaught expansion - which I gotta get as the dreadnaught in that is awesome.

Have you still got a space crusade dread?

well, my space crusade marines come from ebay so it is pretty uneasy for me to answer which game they are from. is uppose that both of you are right in your asumptions...

i do have an old spacecrusader dread, you casn see him in my gallrey, he is painted for my earthangels chapter. might think the paintcheme over tho...

please tell my why dont you just buy a dremel in a hardwarestore? why do you have to order them?
also do you mean an actual dremel or a cheep version of them? we get them here in germany for about 10-20 €s so i wouln´t order them if i go to a normal store and get it even there... is it difficult to get such stuff in GB?

had to ask, because i read that "order line"^^ so often here on dakka...

Hey Vik

So my Dremel arrived, I only ordered it cause I'm at work all day and the nearest hardware store is quite a trek away, so i'd have to wait for the weekend and our weekends are fully booked at the moment.

So I only got a few accessories with it (30) with only 5 cutting discs. I was surprised at how thick the cutting discs are, like if I used that on a model, then i'm going to lose a whole lot of model. Hopefully some thinner ones exist that I can get my hands on...do you know?

actually i wasn´t that successfully with the cutting discs. so be very careful with them. also the tend to split really fast and easy--- to much pressure and whoops...

as for the thiness... well i could make a pic of mine, witha comparision shot and that, i have seen manny useful bits tho... if you ever have the time visit your store and you will see nice things there, but i cant garantee you that you don´t have the thinnest already...

also: there are quite many companies which sell the dremebits real cheep. also i have used real screwdriver bits for various uses. i tend to get hardcore when modelling^^... so sometimes i use a screwdriver bit in the dremel to mill(?) something out.

good luck for your projects, dremel can be a true blessing and a very poor curse...

*crossing fingers* vik
