Hey folks. I just assaulted a Tyranid Lictor with 8 Khorne berzerkers. The squad of zerkers has a zerker champion with powerfist. Can he choose to put all his attacks on the zerker champion? I dind't think he could pick out a model because it's not an independent character. It's just a zerker with an upgrade, but he says he can.

He cannot.

Only Independent Characters can, and indeed must, be singled out.

A Zerker Champion is an Upgrade Character, not an Independent Character.

Of course he will say he can!

He can't though, because it's not an IC, but an Upgrade Character.

To clear things up, this isn't warhammer fantasy. You can do what he is describing in that game. However in 40k only characters that are IC can be singled out in melee. This is the only way to hit the IC.

He has just discovered the "Hidden powerfist". It's very common. Ask any ork player.

To explain:

You are allowed to assign attacks to *units* and *units* only.

The champion is not a unit, therefore you cannot assign attacks to him.

IC's are treated as seperate units in combat, hence why you can attack them seperately.

Nosferatus post contains the best explanation to present to your opponent.

-Sigh-

No, they don't. They are only separate units for the purposes of allocating attacks. They remain part of the unit.

You dont HAVE to single out a character to hit it.

Take this example. I have 30 orks assaulting Your captain and 5 space marines. lets say, 90 attacks? (or 120????)

thats like... 16 on each dude (guess) including the IC.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Wrong Jaon. If there are enough wounds to 'overlap', they can still only be allocated to the unit they were targetting. 120 attacks, 60 hits, 30 wounds... 6 per space marine. The captain gets off scott-free. If some of the unit sensibly allocated their attacks to the IC it would be a different matter.

You are kinda right.

What I should have written, but failed to, was;

"Independent Characters can, and indeed must, be singled out, in order to receive any wounds.
